HomeView Won’t Turn On After Installation: Power and Wiring Fixes

Find the correct fix for a HomeView that will not power on. This guide separates Apple USB-C requirements, TELUS doorbell and plug-in cameras, and legacy PLC systems, with safe step-by-step checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A HomeView that stays dark after installation usually has a power-path problem, not a failed camera. First identify which HomeView you installed: Apple HomeView uses USB-C power, TELUS HomeView-plan cameras use either a plug-in supply or doorbell wiring, and legacy HOMEView systems can lose camera communication through power-line (PLC) modules. The correct voltage, current, connector, outlet, breaker and wiring checks depend on that model.

Disconnect power before handling exposed conductors. TELUS advises consulting a licensed professional before electrical testing or work, and nonstandard doorbell wiring should be handled by a qualified electrician.

Identify your HomeView model before troubleshooting

The name “HomeView” covers several unrelated systems. Match the hardware to the row below; using the wrong power advice can leave a device unpowered or create an electrical hazard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
System How it is powered Typical symptom Start here
Apple HomeView (standard model) USB-C cable and USB-C power adapter Device remains off or shows a lightning bolt with a yellow warning triangle Verify a minimum 30 W adapter with the required voltage/current profile
Apple HomeView Wall Mounted Separately sold USB-C cable and adapter, often routed through a third-party mount No power after mounting, or warning icon disappears when the mount is bypassed Connect directly to compatible USB-C power without the mount
TELUS HomeView-plan doorbell camera Existing wired doorbell circuit and chime wiring No status LED, no doorbell response, or intermittent operation Check the breaker, both terminal connections and the 10–24 V AC supply
TELUS HomeView-plan indoor/outdoor camera Traditional electrical outlet and supplied power cable LED is off or camera does not reconnect Test the outlet, reseat the cable and reboot for 60 seconds
Legacy HOMEView PLC system Power-line communication modules plus camera power Missing Ethernet/Data flashes or cameras absent from an IP search Reconnect the PLC nearest the router, then add cameras one at a time

If your hardware does not match any row, stop before trying a replacement adapter. Read the label on the device and its power supply, or contact the installer, because USB-C, low-voltage doorbell and PLC systems are not interchangeable.

Apple HomeView: confirm the USB-C power requirements

Apple specifies a USB-C cable and USB-C power adapter rated at least 30 W and supporting 15 V at 2 A or higher for the standard HomeView. The HomeView Wall Mounted model uses a separately sold USB-C cable and adapter rated at least 20 W and supporting 9 V at 2.22 A or higher. Wattage alone is not enough: an adapter can advertise 30 W while lacking the voltage profile the device requests.

Apple model Minimum adapter rating Required output profile Cable requirement
HomeView (standard) 30 W or more 15 V, 2 A or higher Compatible USB-C cable in good condition
HomeView Wall Mounted 20 W or more 9 V, 2.22 A or higher Separately sold compatible USB-C cable; bypass third-party mount when testing

A lightning-bolt icon with a yellow warning triangle means the connected power setup does not meet the requirements. Treat that icon as a power-delivery warning rather than proof that the HomeView hardware has failed.

Perform Apple’s basic power-path checks

  1. Inspect the adapter. Confirm it is firmly seated in the wall outlet and that its housing, plug and cable are not cracked, bent, frayed or otherwise damaged. Do not use a visibly damaged supply.
  2. Remove all power. Unplug the adapter from the outlet, then disconnect the USB-C cable from HomeView. This resets the physical connection and lets you inspect both ends.
  3. Clean the contacts. With power disconnected, wipe the adapter, the HomeView port and both cable ends with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not push liquid, metal objects or compressed debris into the port.
  4. Try a known-good outlet. Plug the adapter into an outlet that is already proven to run another appliance. If a switch controls the original outlet, turn that switch on; if the known-good outlet works, have the original circuit checked rather than repeatedly cycling the HomeView.
  5. Substitute both USB-C components. Try another compatible USB-C cable and another adapter that meets the correct voltage, current and wattage profile for your model. Replacing only the cable cannot rule out an under-rated adapter, and replacing only the adapter cannot rule out a damaged cable.
  6. Allow the device to start. Reconnect the cable firmly at HomeView and the adapter, then wait for the normal startup indication. A loose fit that feels unusually easy to remove is a reason to stop and have the port inspected.

Bypass a third-party wall mount

For HomeView Wall Mounted, remove the device from the third-party mount and connect it directly to a compliant USB-C cable and adapter. If it powers on when the mount is bypassed, the adapter and HomeView are receiving power and the fault is in the mount, its cable routing or its installation. Apple directs professionally installed wall-mounted users to contact the mount manufacturer or professional installer when the warning persists.

Choose a replacement Apple adapter without guessing

Match the model-specific output profile printed on the adapter, not just the USB-C connector or a headline wattage. A replacement should meet or exceed the minimum wattage and current while supporting the required voltage. Keep the original cable length and routing in mind: a very long, damaged or poorly made cable can introduce voltage drop or intermittent contact even when the adapter is correctly rated.

  • Standard HomeView: look for USB-C power delivery of at least 30 W with 15 V at 2 A or higher.
  • HomeView Wall Mounted: look for at least 20 W with 9 V at 2.22 A or higher, plus the separately sold compatible cable.
  • Do not substitute a USB-A supply with a passive adapter; the connector shape does not guarantee the required USB-C power negotiation.
  • Retire any cable with exposed shielding, crushed insulation, bent contacts or a connector that disconnects when lightly moved.

TELUS HomeView doorbell camera: restore power safely

A TELUS doorbell camera depends on the home’s low-voltage doorbell circuit. TELUS specifies standard doorbell wiring of 10–24 V AC. A circuit outside that range, missing chime wiring or a nonstandard transformer can prevent startup and should not be corrected by trial-and-error rewiring.

Check the supply and breaker first

  1. Look at the camera LED. Note whether it is completely dark, briefly flashes or remains on. This observation helps distinguish no power from a connection or network problem, but an LED alone does not prove that voltage is safe or adequate.
  2. Check the relevant breaker. Verify that the breaker serving the doorbell transformer or chime is on. If it trips again, do not keep resetting it; arrange professional diagnosis.
  3. Turn off power before touching conductors. Use the home’s electrical isolation procedure and follow the installer’s instructions. TELUS says to consult a licensed professional or electrician before electrical testing or work.
  4. Inspect both doorbell terminals. Each wire must be secured under its terminal, both terminals must be tight, and no wire strands may touch one another. A loose conductor can leave the camera dark or cause intermittent resets.
  5. Check for damaged or pinched wire. Look for insulation cut by the mounting plate, corrosion, a conductor pulled out of the wall or a wire trapped under a screw head. Stop if the cable disappears into an inaccessible junction or the installation does not resemble standard doorbell wiring.
  6. Restore power and observe. After the connections are secured by a competent person, turn the circuit back on and check whether the LED and doorbell functions return.

When the existing doorbell wiring is not standard

If the home has no conventional doorbell and chime wiring, or the transformer rating is unknown, do not connect the camera to a random low-voltage or mains conductor. TELUS notes that a qualified electrician may be required when standard wiring is absent. The electrician can identify the transformer, verify the 10–24 V AC circuit and determine whether a chime or other component must be installed or bypassed.

TELUS indoor or outdoor camera: check the plug-in path

The TELUS indoor/outdoor camera uses a traditional working outlet and its power cable. These cameras do not use the doorbell-terminal procedure above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the outlet works. Plug in another device that you know operates. Test a second outlet if the first is controlled by a wall switch, ground-fault device or timer.
  2. Check the breaker or protective device. A tripped breaker or ground-fault outlet can remove power from an otherwise intact camera cable.
  3. Reseat the power cable. Disconnect and reconnect the cable at the camera and adapter. Inspect for cuts, crushed sections, bent contacts or moisture before reconnecting.
  4. Reboot correctly. Unplug the camera for 60 seconds, then reconnect it. The full minute gives the power supply and camera electronics time to discharge and restart instead of repeatedly brownout-cycling.
  5. Try another known-good outlet. If the camera starts elsewhere, leave it disconnected from the suspect outlet and have that circuit checked.

An illuminated LED with no video is a different fault path from a completely dark LED. Once power is confirmed, troubleshoot the network or account separately; replacing the camera before proving the outlet and cable wastes a working device.

Legacy HOMEView PLC systems: restore communication in order

Older HOMEView installations can power cameras yet lose their data path. The legacy manual associates missing Ethernet/Data flashes or cameras absent from an IP search with extremely poor power wiring or electrical noise. In these systems, a camera that appears dead may actually be unable to communicate through the power-line network.

  1. Unplug every PLC module and camera. Remove power from the system rather than adding devices to a partially running network.
  2. Reconnect the PLC nearest the router first. Plug that module into a suitable outlet and wait for its normal indicators before proceeding.
  3. Add cameras one at a time. Reconnect one camera, allow the PLC link to stabilize and check whether it appears in the IP search. Repeat for each camera.
  4. Change the outlet when communication fails. Move the affected PLC or camera to another outlet on the same home circuit where practical. Electrical noise or poor wiring can block PLC data even when the outlet supplies power.
  5. Identify the offending device or circuit. If one camera causes the link to disappear, leave it disconnected and test the remaining units. A qualified installer can then inspect that camera’s supply, the outlet and sources of electrical noise.

Do not assume that a missing Ethernet/Data indicator means the camera’s lens or electronics have failed. The ordered reconnection procedure isolates power-line communication faults without changing multiple variables at once.

Use the symptom to choose the next test

What you observe Most useful next check Do not do
No light or response on Apple HomeView Known-good outlet, then a compliant cable and adapter Use an adapter that only matches the USB-C shape
Apple lightning bolt with yellow warning triangle Verify the model’s voltage/current profile and bypass a wall mount Assume the device is irreparably damaged
TELUS doorbell LED off Breaker, transformer/circuit and both tight, non-touching terminals Touch or bridge conductors while energized
TELUS indoor/outdoor LED off Known-good outlet, cable reseat and 60-second unplugged reboot Keep using a wet or damaged adapter
Legacy PLC cameras missing from IP search Reconnect the nearest-router PLC first, then cameras individually Reconnect every module at once

When to stop DIY troubleshooting

Escalate after the basic power path has been proven rather than replacing the camera on suspicion. For Apple HomeView, escalation is appropriate when a compliant adapter, a second cable and a known-good outlet do not restore power, or when the device only fails through a professionally installed mount. Contact the mount installer or manufacturer for the latter case.

For TELUS equipment, contact TELUS support when the breaker, outlet or visible connections are correct but the camera remains unpowered. Use a licensed electrician for nonstandard doorbell wiring, an unknown or incorrect transformer, exposed mains wiring, repeated breaker trips, damaged junctions or any measurement that requires energized electrical work.

For a legacy PLC installation, request installer support when the nearest-router PLC works but one or more cameras still disappear after individual reconnection and outlet changes. Persistent electrical noise or poor house wiring may require circuit-level diagnosis that cannot be solved by camera replacement.

Replacement decisions at a glance

Part or path What must match Suitable DIY action Professional help trigger
Apple standard adapter USB-C, at least 30 W, 15 V at 2 A or higher Substitute a known-good compliant adapter and cable No power with proven outlet and compliant substitutes
Apple Wall Mounted adapter/cable USB-C, at least 20 W, 9 V at 2.22 A or higher; mount path must not interrupt delivery Test direct connection outside the mount Device works only when mount is removed
TELUS doorbell circuit 10–24 V AC, secure separate terminals and standard chime wiring Visual inspection with power isolated Missing standard wiring, unknown transformer or energized testing
TELUS indoor/outdoor supply Working outlet, intact cable and adapter Outlet test, cable reseat and 60-second reboot Outlet or breaker fault, water damage or persistent no-power state
Legacy PLC link PLC nearest router first, then one camera at a time; outlet free of problematic noise Ordered unplug/reconnect and alternate-outlet test Persistent communication loss across known-good outlets

The safest diagnosis is the one that changes one variable at a time: prove the outlet, confirm the specified electrical profile, inspect the connector or terminals, bypass any mount or PLC complication, and only then consider hardware failure.
