Apple’s US store lists it at $129, and its core functions do not depend on an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad.
The harder decision in October 2026 is whether to save money on the original or pay $149 for the announced HomePod mini 2. Apple says the newer model is intended to receive Siri AI in a future software update, while the original mini’s eligibility has not been announced. Buy the original for proven non-AI features and the lower price; choose mini 2 if future Siri AI, newer hardware or its announced Apple TV surround features justify the premium.

The short answer: which HomePod mini should you buy?
For an Apple household, the first-generation HomePod mini remains a sensible purchase when your priorities are dependable audio playback, AirPlay, stereo pairing, multiroom listening, ordinary Siri requests and control of compatible smart-home devices. Those jobs are available today and do not require Apple Intelligence.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →There are two reasons to pause before ordering one. First, Apple’s US price for the original is now $129, rather than its earlier $99 price. Second, Apple announced HomePod mini 2 at $149 on October 13, 2026, and says Siri AI will come to that model through a future software update. The $20 difference is therefore a payment for newer hardware and announced future capability, not for a different basic setup requirement today.

Availability is still recent enough that model names and checkout prices can vary by market. Confirm that a listing explicitly says “HomePod mini” or “HomePod mini 2,” check the seller and generation, and verify the final price before paying.
What the original HomePod mini can do without Apple Intelligence
Play music and other audio
The mini’s central job is still audio. You can play supported services and Apple-device audio on one speaker, send sound to it with AirPlay, or use two compatible speakers as a stereo pair. Multiple HomePods can also play throughout a home as a multiroom system. None of those playback modes requires Apple Intelligence.
AirPlay sharing is documented for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV and Mac. That makes the mini especially convenient when your household already uses Apple devices: select the speaker from an AirPlay control, or send audio from an Apple TV to the HomePod setup. The speaker is less compelling if most of your phones, tablets and computers are outside Apple’s ecosystem because the setup and control experience is designed around Apple hardware.
Handle everyday Siri requests
Apple’s existing Siri functions remain available independently of the newer Siri AI branding. You can ask for playback controls, timers and alarms, general information requests, and commands for compatible home accessories. Siri can also be used for natural-language voice commands and Apple’s Intercom feature, which lets people send spoken announcements between supported Apple devices and rooms.
These are command-and-response tasks, not a promise of the richer conversations or broad world knowledge Apple associates with Siri AI. If you mainly want hands-free playback, a timer while cooking or a spoken command to a light, the original mini already covers that use case.
Act as a smart-home hub
Apple identifies HomePod mini as a smart-home hub. In a compatible Apple home, it can provide the central connection used to control accessories and automations when you are away from the house or when another device is not acting as the hub. The store listing also identifies sound recognition and a temperature/humidity sensor.
The sensor is useful for automations or room information only where the relevant Apple software and accessories support those readings. Do not buy the mini solely as a general-purpose environmental monitor; Apple’s listing establishes that the sensors exist, not a particular accuracy level or a full set of automation rules for every accessory.

Work with Apple’s accessibility and communication features
Apple’s accessibility documentation describes voice control through natural-language commands, and Intercom can broadcast messages around the home. Those features can make the mini more useful than a speaker that only starts music, particularly for households that already have several Apple devices in different rooms.
Original HomePod mini versus HomePod mini 2
The following comparison separates confirmed current facts from announced or future features. The prices are US figures and may differ elsewhere.

| Reported launch timing | Available as the existing model where stock remains | TechRadar reported shipping scheduled for October 30, 2026 |
TechRadar reported a $149.99 launch price for mini 2, while Apple’s announcement lists $149. The difference may reflect retailer or reporting presentation, so use the checkout total in your country rather than assuming one figure applies everywhere.
What Apple Intelligence changes—and what it does not
Apple Intelligence is not required for the original mini
You do not need an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad to play audio, use AirPlay, issue ordinary Siri commands, pair speakers for stereo, play in multiple rooms or control supported smart-home accessories with the original HomePod mini. Apple Support’s setup requirements are based on compatible Apple hardware and current supported operating systems, not on the newer Apple Intelligence feature set.
Mini 2 is the model with an explicit Siri AI plan
Apple’s October 13, 2026 newsroom announcement says Siri AI is coming to HomePod mini 2 in a future software update. Apple says that, once enabled on a supported mini 2, even people without an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad can benefit from Siri AI’s broad world knowledge, richer natural conversations and improved music discovery.
That wording describes a future capability, not a feature available at the moment of announcement. It also does not establish that the original mini will receive the same update. If Siri AI is the reason you are buying, mini 2 is the only generation Apple has specifically identified for it, and you should be comfortable waiting for the software release.
Language and server limits matter
Apple lists English availability for the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Some server-side Siri AI features have daily limits. A buyer outside those English-language markets, or someone expecting unlimited AI requests, should treat the announcement as conditional rather than universal.

Price, offer and total cost
Original mini at $129
Apple’s current US store lists the original HomePod mini at $129. The listing offers blue, yellow, midnight, white and orange finishes. Apple also advertises three months of Apple Music with purchase. The subscription promotion is an offer attached to the purchase page, not evidence that Apple Music remains free after the trial period; check the redemption terms and renewal price shown to you.

Mini 2 at $149
Apple announced a US price of $149 for HomePod mini 2. At that price, the premium over the current original is $20. TechRadar reported $149.99 and an October 30, 2026 shipping date, so early buyers should verify whether a local retailer is showing a rounded Apple price, a tax-inclusive figure or a different market price.
What you may need beyond the speaker
- An Apple device that meets the setup requirements and runs a currently supported operating system.
- An Apple account and a home Wi-Fi network for configuration and normal network features.
- Compatible Apple devices or services if you want AirPlay, Apple TV audio or Intercom across rooms.
- An Apple Music subscription if you want the service after any promotional period; the speaker itself does not make a continuing subscription free.
Setup requirements for the original HomePod mini
Apple Support identifies the original mini as a 2020 product and documents setup and AirPlay sharing from iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV and Mac. The initial configuration is normally completed from a nearby Apple device rather than from a Windows-only setup.
- Check the controller device. Apple lists iPhone SE, iPhone 6s or later, iPod touch (7th generation), and specified iPad generations as supported setup hardware when they run a current supported operating system.
- Update that device. Install the latest operating system available for the model before beginning. A device that is too old to run the required software can prevent setup even if its hardware is otherwise listed.
- Connect the mini to power and place it on the intended Wi-Fi network. Keep the controller device nearby and signed in to the Apple account used for the home.
- Complete the on-screen Home setup. Assign the speaker to a room, choose the requested personal-assistant and account settings, and allow the configuration to finish before unplugging or moving it.
- Test the functions you actually need. Play a short track, send audio with AirPlay, ask for a timer, and try one compatible smart-home command. Testing these separately shows whether a problem is with setup, network playback or an accessory.
Exact button names can change with operating-system updates. If the setup card does not appear, open the Home app on the compatible controller device and follow Apple’s current on-screen instructions rather than relying on an old screenshot or third-party guide.
Choosing by room and listening plan
One speaker in a bedroom, office or kitchen
One mini makes sense when you want a compact Apple speaker for personal listening, timers, news or voice control in a single room. The listing specifies a full-range driver and dual force-cancelling passive radiators, but Apple does not publish an independent loudness or frequency-response test in the supplied product information. Treat room size and placement as practical decisions, not as promises of a particular measured output.
Two speakers for stereo
A stereo pair is the better choice when you want left-right separation from two matching HomePod mini units. Buy two of the same generation if you want the most predictable pairing experience, and place them symmetrically at the listening position. A stereo pair is not the same as merely assigning two speakers to the same room: pairing creates the left and right channels, while multiroom playback synchronizes audio in separate rooms.
Several rooms
Multiroom audio is useful when the priority is continuous music as you move around the home. Consider the number of rooms you actually use, the available power outlets and Wi-Fi coverage before buying several units. Start with one mini and add another only after confirming that AirPlay and network playback are reliable in the intended locations.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Apple TV listening
Apple TV integration is an ecosystem advantage. The original mini can receive AirPlay audio from Apple TV, while Apple has announced surround-sound use involving HomePod mini 2 and Apple TV 4K. Because the mini 2 surround announcement is recent, check Apple’s final compatibility instructions for the required number of speakers, software versions and supported Apple TV hardware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Five questions to answer before you buy
1. Is $129 a good value for your actual use?
It is reasonable when you need established AirPlay, basic Siri, smart-home hub functions or a small stereo/multiroom speaker now. It is less attractive if you are buying primarily for generative answers or conversational Siri, because no such original-mini eligibility has been announced.
2. Do you want the future Siri AI option?
If yes, the $149 mini 2 is the safer generation choice because Apple has named it in the Siri AI plan. Remember that the update is future-dated, language availability is limited, and some server-side functions may have daily caps.
3. How invested are you in Apple hardware?
Households with iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV get the clearest benefit from AirPlay and shared controls. If you do not use Apple devices, confirm that the available setup path meets your needs before treating the mini as a general-purpose wireless speaker.
4. Do you need a hub or only a speaker?
Choose the mini when smart-home hub capability, sound recognition or temperature/humidity sensing is part of the plan. If you only need the least expensive way to play music, compare the total ecosystem requirements rather than paying for features you will not use.
5. Can you wait for mini 2 availability?
Waiting is sensible if you want the newer generation and can postpone the purchase until listings, delivery dates and software support are clearer. Buy the original now when the $20 saving and immediately established functions matter more than an announced future update.

Common pitfalls and fixes
Buying the wrong generation
Listings may abbreviate the product name or mix first-generation stock with mini 2 language. Check the model name, generation, color and seller on the order page. Do not infer the generation from a photograph alone.

Expecting Siri AI immediately
Mini 2’s Siri AI is a planned software update, not a guaranteed launch-day behavior. Until Apple enables it on supported speakers, use the speaker’s ordinary Siri functions and check Apple’s release notes for the actual rollout.
Assuming any phone can complete setup
The documented setup path uses specified iPhone, iPod touch and iPad models with supported software. If setup fails, first confirm the controller model and operating-system version, then retry on the same Wi-Fi network with the device nearby.
Confusing stereo pairing with multiroom playback
Two speakers playing the same track in two rooms are not automatically a stereo pair. Use Apple’s Home setup controls to create a stereo pair when you want distinct left and right channels; use multiroom controls when you want synchronized playback in separate rooms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOverlooking regional and daily limits
Siri AI availability is listed for specific English-language countries, and some server-side features have daily limits. Check your country and language before paying the mini 2 premium for AI-related reasons.
Final buying recommendation
Buy the original HomePod mini at $129 if your decision is about what it can do now: AirPlay, Apple-device playback, stereo and multiroom audio, everyday Siri, Intercom and Apple smart-home control. Its 2020 introduction does not remove those functions, and Apple’s current listing still supports them.
Choose HomePod mini 2 at Apple’s announced $149 US price if you specifically want the generation Apple has identified for future Siri AI, or if its announced Apple TV 4K surround role fits your setup. Treat Siri AI as a promised update with language and usage qualifications, not as a present-day guarantee. For everyone else, the original mini remains a practical Apple-ecosystem speaker without Apple Intelligence.
