It is not a particular box or service: the streaming source, display, audio system, connections, and content work together.
What home theater streaming means
“Home theater” describes the viewing and listening setup; streaming is one way to deliver media to it. The source might be an app on a smart TV, an external streaming player, a set-top box, a game console, or another compatible device. Dolby’s home theater setup guide describes these kinds of sources alongside displays and audio components.

That makes home theater streaming a system experience rather than a specific product category. A television with built-in apps can qualify, as can a larger setup with a projector, separate audio equipment, and a connected player.
What equipment makes up a setup?
Display
A television is the most straightforward display for many rooms. A projector can create a larger image, but may involve planning for a screen, mounting, room conditions, and separate audio. The right choice depends on room fit and viewing preferences, not on whether a setup counts as home theater streaming. Dolby discusses both TVs and projectors in its setup guidance.

Streaming source
A smart TV’s built-in apps may be all you need to start. An external streaming device is optional: it can provide apps on a compatible display, but it does not by itself guarantee a particular resolution, HDR format, or audio feature. Set-top boxes, UHD Blu-ray players, and game consoles can also serve as entertainment sources, depending on what they support.
Audio
The simplest setup uses the TV’s speakers. For fuller or more immersive sound, you can add a soundbar or use an AV receiver with separate speakers. Dolby’s General Dolby Atmos Home Setup Guidelines describes an Atmos system as requiring compatible playback equipment, a receiver or processor, and speakers; a compatible Atmos soundbar is another possible audio path. The specific content and playback chain must support Atmos as well.

Network and connections
The streaming source needs internet access, and the components need compatible connections. HDMI is a common way to connect devices, but the capabilities of the ports and the rest of the signal path matter when you want particular features. Dolby recommends planning connections and cabling around the chosen system in its home theater guide.
Requirements can vary by device and service. For example, Google’s Chromecast 4K HDR support guidance specifies a compatible HDTV with an HDMI port supporting HDCP 2.2 and 60 frames per second for that support context. That example is not a universal requirement for every streaming setup.

Content and service
A capable TV or player cannot add a feature that the content, streaming service, subscription, or connected audio equipment does not provide. To get a particular picture or sound format, check support across the service and plan, playback source, display, receiver or soundbar, and connection path. Dolby explicitly notes that Atmos playback requires compatible hardware and content in its Dolby Atmos quick-start guidance.
Can you stream through an existing home theater?
Usually, if the setup has a compatible streaming source and a way to route its picture and sound to the display and audio equipment. That source could be a TV app or a connected player, console, or set-top box. Check the available inputs and the formats supported by each component; an older receiver or display may limit which features pass through even when the streaming device supports them.

How to choose a setup that fits
Compare the options that matter for your room and viewing habits:
Best Value
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Total cost: include the display, streaming source if needed, audio equipment, and any installation or connection needs.
- Room and image: consider whether a TV or projector fits the available space and the image size you want.
- Picture and sound formats: verify that the service, plan, source, display, audio equipment, and connection path support the formats you intend to use.
- Apps and compatibility: check that the source offers the services you use and connects to your existing equipment.
- Setup complexity: a TV with built-in apps is a simpler starting point; a projector or receiver-and-speaker system can require more planning.
A practical starting setup can be a TV with built-in apps and its own speakers. Add an external player only if you need a source your TV does not provide; add a soundbar or receiver and speakers if you want different audio; consider a projector if a larger image suits the room. Dolby’s component guide outlines these display and audio choices.
