Home Solar, Battery Storage, or Grid Power: Which Setup Fits Your Home?

Grid power, rooftop solar, batteries and community solar serve different needs. Compare roof suitability, utility export credits, energy shifting and outage backup before choosing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grid power is the simplest option if you do not want to install or manage equipment. Rooftop solar may reduce the electricity you buy, but its value depends on your roof, household use and utility’s export-credit rules. A battery can shift solar energy to later hours and, with the right system design, provide backup during outages. Community solar may be an alternative if you rent or cannot use your roof.

How the four setups differ

Setup Main value What to check
Grid electricity No rooftop solar or home battery installation to manage. Your utility’s rates, reliability and available programs shape the household experience.
Grid-tied rooftop solar Generates electricity at home and may reduce purchases from the grid. Roof production, system and financing terms, and export credits determine the economics. Panels alone generally do not provide power during a grid outage.
Solar plus battery Stores some solar generation for later use and may provide backup. Consider the added system cost, battery energy and power capacity, inverter configuration, and which loads can be served.
Community solar May let you participate in a shared solar project without putting panels on your roof. Check local availability, subscription terms and how bill credits work.

This is a qualitative comparison, not a price or savings estimate. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes rooftop solar, storage and community solar options in its Homeowner’s Guide to Solar.

Is your home a good fit for rooftop solar?

Start with the roof, not a generic promise of savings. DOE recommends considering the roof’s age, shade, size, shape and slope. South-facing roofs with slopes of 15 to 40 degrees typically perform best, though other roof orientations and slopes may also be suitable.

For an initial production estimate, DOE points homeowners to NREL’s PVWatts tool; a site-specific estimate is still important. Ask for a custom proposal that accounts for the home’s actual roof and conditions rather than treating a general estimate as a quote.

What determines whether solar saves money?

There is no universal payback period or current installed price that applies to every home. DOE identifies several factors that affect savings: household electricity use, system size, whether the system is purchased or leased, sunlight and roof direction, utility rates, and the compensation for electricity sent back to the grid.

Net-metering eligibility, rates and bill-credit design vary by state and utility. Before deciding, get the utility’s current written export-credit terms and compare them with the proposal. A system’s production has less financial value when exported electricity earns less than the electricity you would otherwise buy.

What a battery changes—and what it does not

Solar production can fall in the evening just as household electricity use rises. A battery can store some daytime generation and release it later, shifting when that energy is used. DOE’s overview of solar energy and storage explains the role of storage in integrating solar power.

  • Energy capacity describes how much energy the battery can store.
  • Power capacity describes how much electricity it can deliver at one time.

Both affect what a system can do and its cost. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 2024 Residential Battery Storage Annual Technology Baseline provides technical and cost-analysis context, not a quote for a particular home.

Will rooftop solar keep your home running in an outage?

Usually, ordinary grid-connected solar panels shut off when the grid fails. This safety behavior helps prevent electricity from flowing onto lines that utility workers may be repairing. Panels alone therefore should not be treated as outage backup.

Backup operation requires storage and an inverter configured to isolate the home from the grid. What remains powered—and for how long—depends on the system design, stored energy, power output and the loads being served. Ask an installer which circuits and appliances the proposed system can support, and for how long under stated conditions. DOE explains the safety and system-design considerations in Solar and Resilience Basics.

How to compare options for your household

  1. Review your electricity bill. Note your usage and, if available, hourly or seasonal patterns. This helps distinguish daytime consumption from evening demand.
  2. Check the roof. Consider age, shading, usable area, shape and slope before assuming panels will fit or perform as expected.
  3. Estimate production, then request a site-specific proposal. Use PVWatts for an initial estimate and ask for a custom assessment of the property.
  4. Compare the proposal with your utility terms. Review total system cost and financing alongside current utility rates and written rules for credits on exported electricity.
  5. Evaluate a battery separately. Compare the cost of storage with the value of using solar energy later and, if backup matters, identify the loads you want powered.
  6. Check local alternatives and incentives. Ask your utility and relevant state or local consumer-energy resources about current rates, export rules, incentives and community-solar programs.

When community solar may make more sense

If you rent, have a shaded or unsuitable roof, or do not want a rooftop installation, a shared community-solar project may offer an access route. Programs and contract terms are local, so check whether a project is available where you live and understand its subscription and bill-credit rules before enrolling. DOE discusses community solar as an option in its homeowner guide.

Numbers that need context

DOE’s homeowner guide says NREL analyses use an average system size of 7.15 kW DC, with a 3–11 kW range. Those are analysis assumptions, not a recommendation for an individual home or a current consumer quote. The same guide reports a historical Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory finding of approximately $15,000 in home-buyer premiums for homes with solar across the markets studied; that historical, market-dependent result is not a guaranteed current resale premium.

For additional analysis of solar paired with storage, NREL’s Solar-Plus-Storage Analysis provides broader market context. It does not replace a location-specific estimate of costs, utility compensation or household savings.
