Home improvement stocks usually represent retailers selling products and services to homeowners and contractors; building materials stocks usually represent companies that manufacture, distribute, or install construction and renovation inputs. The labels overlap: Home Depot sells building materials, while Builders FirstSource serves both new home construction and repair and remodeling. For investors, the useful distinction is each company’s actual customers, products, activities, and end markets—not its category name alone.
What separates the two categories?
Think of them as different points in the home and construction spending chain. A home improvement retailer brings together a broad assortment of products and services and sells them through retail channels. A building products company may make particular materials, distribute them to professional customers, install them, or combine those activities.

These are practical labels, not mutually exclusive industry boundaries. Home Depot describes a retail assortment that includes building materials, and Builders FirstSource serves repair and remodeling as well as new residential construction. Company business descriptions are therefore more informative than the category label.

How the business models differ
| Comparison | Home improvement retailer | Building materials or products company |
|---|---|---|
| Core activity | Retailing a broad assortment; some retailers also offer installation and equipment rental. | May manufacture, distribute, or install specialized materials and components; the mix differs by company. |
| Illustrative company | The Home Depot sells home improvement products, building materials, lawn and garden goods, décor, and facilities maintenance products. It also offers installation services and tool and equipment rental. Home Depot 2025 Annual Report | Builders FirstSource manufactures, supplies, and installs structural and related building products. Sherwin-Williams manufactures, develops, distributes, and sells paints, coatings, and related products. Builders FirstSource 2025 Form 10-K; Sherwin-Williams investor relations |
| Customer and channel | Can serve both consumers and professional customers; check the retailer’s own description of its customer base and channels. | Can serve professional builders, remodelers, industrial buyers, commercial customers, or retail customers, depending on the products and company. |
| Product exposure | Broad store assortment rather than one materials category. | Often more specialized: structural products and components at one company, paints and coatings at another. |
Company examples—and why the label is not enough
The Home Depot and Lowe’s: retail-side examples
The Home Depot’s description illustrates a retailer with a wide product assortment and services layered onto product sales. Its investor documents report fiscal 2025 net sales of $164.7 billion and earnings of $14.2 billion. These are Home Depot company-reported fiscal-year results, not figures for the home improvement stock category as a whole. Home Depot Investor Documents

Lowe’s is another major home improvement retailer to examine on the retail side. Its Form 10-K covers the fiscal year ended January 30, 2026; consult the filing for the company’s detailed business description. Lowe’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K
Builders FirstSource: manufacturing, supply, and installation
Builders FirstSource supplies and manufactures structural and related building products and provides installation and construction services. Its 2025 Form 10-K reported approximately 585 locations in 43 U.S. states. That is a company-reported footprint, not a measure of its addressable market. Its business serves professional builders in both new residential construction and repair and remodeling. Builders FirstSource 2025 Form 10-K

Sherwin-Williams: a different kind of materials company
Sherwin-Williams makes and sells paints, coatings, and related products to professional, industrial, commercial, and retail customers. It belongs in a broad materials comparison, but its product and customer mix is unlike a lumber or framing-products supplier. Sherwin-Williams investor relations

How to compare companies as an investor
Neither category is a single, uniform investment. Compare companies on the same dimensions, using their filings and matching reporting periods:
Rank #3
- Customers: Identify exposure to DIY consumers, professional remodelers, homebuilders, industrial buyers, and commercial customers.
- Activities: Separate retailing from manufacturing, distribution, installation, and other services. A company may combine several.
- End markets: Check whether sales depend on new residential construction, repair and remodeling, nonresidential construction, industrial demand, or several of these.
- Products: Distinguish a broad retail assortment from specialized components, structural products, paints, or coatings.
- Demand and costs: Use company filings to assess sensitivity to housing activity and input costs; those exposures can vary substantially by product and customer mix.
- Financial measures: Compare sales growth, margins, cash flow, debt, capital returns, valuation, and dividend measures using comparable definitions and fiscal periods.
The available business descriptions do not establish which category is safer, cheaper, or more likely to outperform. They also do not provide a harmonized market-size estimate for the two categories. A category label alone cannot answer those investment questions.

Builders FirstSource’s 2025 Form 10-K cited a Home Improvement Research Institute forecast, published in September 2025, for a 2.9% increase in professional repair and remodel end-market sales in 2026 compared with 2025. This was a forecast, not a realized 2026 result, and it concerns that end market—not expected sales growth for every retailer or building products company. Builders FirstSource 2025 Form 10-K
