Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The script did not fail loudly because a bulb broke. It failed because a helper value was valid, and a valid zero is not a missing value. An input_number helper with no initial: setting came up at its minimum, 0.0. The template’s fallback never ran, the lighting call received brightness 0, and the run finished with a success status. Home Assistant defines brightness 0 as off, but on the author’s installation the lights stayed exactly as they were. Both facts matter, and they point to different fixes.
What brightness 0 means in Home Assistant
Home Assistant’s light actions accept two brightness fields with different scales:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- brightness: 0 (off) through 255 (brightest).
- brightness_pct: 0% (off) through 100% (brightest).
Those are the documented meanings. The documentation also notes that light fields a particular light does not support may be skipped, so a request can be accepted without every field being applied. That is a separate question from what a zero means. The author of this case describes the result on their own installation as a no-op: the call went through and the room did not change. This article reports that observation as the author’s experience. It does not claim to know which layer of the integration produced the no-op.
How a valid zero got past the fallback
The TV scene read its ambient brightness from a slider backed by an input_number helper. A helper without an explicit starting value begins at its minimum. Here is a helper definition that avoids the problem by declaring the starting value:
#1 Best Overall
- CONVENIENT CONTROLS – Easily manage one or more lights in a room using this convenient remote control with nine buttons: on/off, dimming, four light modes, and a night light
- CUSTOMIZABLE BUTTONS – For extra convenience, the four numbered buttons can be customized in the WiZ app to function as shortcuts to your favorite light modes
- WIDE RANGE – Control your smart lights and devices up to a range of 15 meters (50 feet) in any normal indoor environment with partitions and walls
- WORKS WITHOUT WI-FI – This remote sends a signal directly to your lights or devices without relying on a local network, so it works reliably even if your Wi-Fi is down
- CONNECTED BY WIZ – Fully compatible with all Connected by WiZ products—use the WiZ app to set up and unlock all the benefits of smart lighting; not compatible with Philips Hue products
input_number:
tv_ambient_brightness:
name: TV ambient brightness
min: 1
max: 100
step: 1
initial: 70
unit_of_measurement: "%"
A fallback in a template only applies when the input cannot be converted to a number. A helper that reads 0.0 converts cleanly, so the fallback is never reached. The author’s account is that both slider values read 0.0 after setup, and the default of 70 did not replace them. The lesson is to stop depending on conversion failure to catch a bad value, and to check the value against the range you actually want.
Fixing the script
- Declare a starting value on every helper. Add
initial:with a value inside yourminandmax, as shown above. - Guard the value explicitly. Convert it with
float(0), then reject anything that is not greater than zero. The fallback of 70 is the author’s choice for a TV ambient scene, not a required value. - Choose the action that matches the intent. If the goal is darkness, call
light.turn_off. If the goal is a dim but lit scene, send a positive level.
script:
tv_mode:
sequence:
- variables:
raw: "{{ states('input_number.tv_ambient_brightness') | float(0) }}"
level: "{{ raw | int if raw > 0 else 70 }}"
- action: light.turn_on
target:
entity_id: light.living_room
data:
brightness_pct: "{{ level }}"
If you prefer to keep the helper’s range at 0 to 100, the guard above is still the safer design, because it handles a zero produced by any future change to the helper, not only the first-boot case.

A green run is not an outcome check
A successful run only shows that Home Assistant executed the actions in the script. It does not show that the room reached the requested state. Three details make this easy to miss:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Scripts run in order, but the caller may not wait.
script.turn_onstarts a script in the background and does not wait for it to finish. If another automation depends on the lights being set, call the script directly so the caller waits for it. - A success envelope means the action ran. When an API call executes an action that returns no response data, the response is
null. A null response is not evidence that a light changed. - Entity state is the outcome. Check the light’s state and attributes after the call.
Here is a pattern that calls the script directly and then waits for a visible result:

- action: script.tv_mode
- wait_template: "{{ state_attr('light.living_room', 'brightness') | int(0) > 0 }}"
timeout: "00:00:05"
continue_on_timeout: false
The wait fails the run if the brightness attribute does not move above zero within five seconds, which turns a silent no-op into a visible error. Adjust the condition if your scene is meant to be off, and remember that some integrations report state more slowly than others.

The author reports that their LG integration never reported the TV as off, so a condition that waited for that state would never be true. This is one device report, not a general rule for LG televisions or for every integration. Before you build a TV-off condition, check what your entity actually reports in Developer tools > States.

Troubleshooting checklist
- After a restart, is the helper still
0.0? Open Developer tools > States and check the helper, then confirm thatinitial:is set. - Did the light’s
brightnessattribute change after the call? If not, check whether the call received a zero or an unsupported field. - Does your guard handle the value you expect? Test the template in Developer tools > Template with the helper set to 0 and to a positive number.
- Are errors hidden? Review Settings > System > Logs after running the script.
