Home Assistant does not update automation references when an entity ID changes, so triggers, conditions, or actions can be left pointing to the old ID. Changing only the displayed entity name does not affect automations or scripts.
Why can an entity rename break an automation?
Home Assistant uses an entity ID—such as light.kitchen—as a reference in automation logic. If that ID changes, an automation can keep referring to the former ID. Home Assistant describes the resulting warning as “Referenced entities … are missing or not currently available.” Its troubleshooting guidance says the automation still uses the old entity ID rather than automatically switching to the new one. This is specifically an entity-ID issue, not proof that changing any name will break an automation. A displayed entity name is a label; the entity ID is the reference used by automations and scripts. Home Assistant says changing only the entity name does not affect those references. Home Assistant: Customizing entities
How to repair an automation that still uses the old ID
- Open Settings > Automations & scenes and select the affected automation.
- Review its triggers, conditions, and actions. Wherever the old entity appears, select the intended entity again.
- Save the automation.
- Check other automations, scripts, and dashboards for references to the old entity ID, and update those references as needed.
Home Assistant’s troubleshooting instructions specifically call for reselecting the entity in affected triggers, conditions, and actions, then saving. A working repair in one automation does not update other places that refer to the old ID. Home Assistant: Troubleshooting automations Home Assistant: Customizing entities

Choose the kind of rename you actually need
| Change | Effect on automations and scripts | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Change only the displayed entity name | Does not affect automations or scripts that refer to the entity ID. | Usually no reference repair is needed for that name change. |
| Change the entity ID | Existing references may continue to use the old ID. | Update affected triggers, conditions, actions, scripts, and dashboards. |
To edit entity attributes, Home Assistant documents the path Settings > Devices & services > Entities. If you change an entity ID, treat it as a reference change and inspect anything that uses it. Home Assistant: Customizing entities
Entity ID, unique ID, device, and automation name are different
These identifiers and labels serve different purposes, so a “device rename” does not by itself establish that an entity ID changed.

- Displayed entity name: the human-readable label. Changing only this label does not affect automation and script references.
- Entity ID: the reference used in automations and dashboards. Changing it can leave existing references behind.
- Unique ID: a static identifier used internally. Home Assistant’s FAQ says an entity with a unique ID can have its entity ID changed if it follows the required
<domain>.<id>format and does not conflict with another entity. For entities without a unique ID, the FAQ describes the entity ID as fixed; editing options can differ by entity and path. Home Assistant: Why does this entity not have a unique ID? - Device: a device can be associated with entities, but device-based automation references are a separate matter. Home Assistant also warns that device-based triggers, conditions, or actions may become unavailable after a device is replaced; that is not the same as an entity-ID rename. Home Assistant: Troubleshooting automations
- Automation name: the automation’s label is not its entity ID. Renaming the automation changes its name, not its entity ID. Home Assistant: Automation editors
The developer documentation explains that the entity registry tracks entities that provide a unique ID, helps preserve their entity IDs, and prevents another entity from using the same ID. It also says users cannot change an entity’s unique ID because registry settings depend on it. Home Assistant Developer Docs: Entity registry

A safer habit when organizing entities
- If you only want a clearer label in the interface, change the displayed entity name and leave the entity ID alone.
- If an entity-ID change is necessary, first identify the automations, scripts, and dashboards that refer to it; then update and save those references.
- After editing, check the automation for missing or unavailable referenced entities.
