Homarr: A Dashboard That Makes a Homelab Easier to Navigate

Homarr makes homelab services easier to find and check from one dashboard, while leaving hosting and maintenance to the tools and systems underneath.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Homarr can make a homelab easier to navigate and check by bringing links and supported service information together on one dashboard. It is a front door to the apps and services you already run—not a replacement for those services, their host, or the work of maintaining them.

What Homarr does—and what it does not

Homarr is an open-source dashboard for arranging access to apps and services. You create boards, place app shortcuts and widgets on them, and connect supported services when you want information or actions in the dashboard. Homarr describes its purpose as “Your dashboard for the services you run.” (Homarr)

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Think of it as a control surface, not an infrastructure manager. Homarr does not install or host the services represented on a board, and a dashboard view does not replace managing the machines, containers, networks, or applications underneath.

How the dashboard fits together

The basic flow is service endpoint → integration → widget → board. The service remains where you installed it. An integration connects Homarr to a supported service and makes available data or actions that widgets can use. The board is the page where you arrange those widgets and links. Shortcuts for quick access

An app entry can be a saved shortcut to a service, with an optional status check. That alone can reduce the time spent remembering addresses and opening separate bookmarks. A status check is not the same as a full service monitor; it tells you only what that check is configured to report. (Homarr getting started documentation)

Widgets for service information and actions

Widgets can use integration-provided data and actions, so a board may show more than links. Which details or controls are available depends on the integration and the service. Homarr also documents custom widgets that use configured service APIs, but that does not mean every service can be connected or controlled in every way. Check the current integration catalog and documentation for the services you rely on. (Homarr integrations documentation)

Why it can reduce day-to-day friction

If your routine involves opening several self-hosted apps, a board gives you one place to start. You can group shortcuts and supported widgets around the way you use your setup—for example, keeping frequently opened services together and putting relevant service information nearby. Homarr’s official product page highlights drag-and-drop board editing, interface customization, integrations, authentication, and permissions. It currently advertises 89+ built-in integrations; that catalog count can change, so treat it as a current product-page claim rather than a permanent compatibility guarantee. (Homarr)

The GUI-oriented approach may suit people who prefer arranging a dashboard visually: Homarr describes drag-and-drop editing and says integrations can be configured without YAML. That is a configuration preference, not proof that Homarr is universally easier than other dashboards. The right fit depends on how you prefer to configure software and how deeply you need to interact with each service. (Homarr)

What you need to run it

Homarr needs a host and persistent storage. Its current getting-started documentation lists Linux/amd64 or Linux/arm64, 500 MB RAM, 600 MB of free disk space for the container image, and a writable persistent /appdata directory. It says Linux/arm/v7 is not supported. These are the figures in Homarr’s documentation; check that page again when planning a deployment because requirements may change. (Homarr getting started documentation)

Homarr recommends Docker Compose as the starting point for most self-hosters. Its documentation also covers Kubernetes with Helm, platform-specific routes for environments such as Unraid, Synology, Proxmox, Home Assistant, Portainer, and QNAP, and managed or app-platform options including PikaPods. These are documented deployment paths, not a requirement to buy a particular server or use a particular provider. (Homarr installation documentation)

One Docker-specific choice is easy to overlook: mounting the Docker socket is optional and is needed only if you want the Docker integration. Do not expose it simply because you are installing Homarr; use the socket mount only when that integration is part of your intended setup. (Homarr installation documentation)

Choosing a dashboard for your homelab

There is no universally best dashboard for every homelab. Compare options against the work you want the dashboard to do:

  • Configuration style: Do you want to edit a visual board, or prefer file-based configuration? Homarr emphasizes GUI editing and no-YAML integration setup. (Homarr)
  • Service interaction: Are saved links and status checks enough, or do you need widgets that display data or expose actions through supported integrations? Verify the specific service and feature in the current catalog. (Homarr integrations documentation; Homarr getting started documentation)
  • Access control: If several people use the dashboard, check whether its authentication, users, groups, and permissions meet your needs. Homarr advertises authentication and permissions; their presence does not by itself establish that a deployment is secure by default. (Homarr)
  • Deployment fit: Make sure the supported installation route matches your environment, whether that is Docker Compose, Kubernetes, a NAS or server-management platform, or managed hosting. (Homarr installation documentation)

When Homarr is a sensible choice

Homarr is worth considering if your main problem is navigating a growing collection of homelab services and you want a visual board that can combine shortcuts with information from supported integrations. It is less likely to meet your needs on its own if by “management” you mean provisioning servers, administering every application, or monitoring any service regardless of integration support. In those cases, the dashboard can still be one layer of your setup, but it does not replace the tools responsible for those jobs.
