Build a festive stream with four coordinated scenes—a starting screen, live scene, brief-away screen, and ending screen—then add seasonal details that suit your channel without covering the content viewers came to see. For a live holiday look, combine a readable background with a separate webcam frame and social bar; choose static or animated assets to match your software and output format.
Choose a holiday look that fits your channel
Start with one visual direction and carry it through each scene. You might use a snow-kissed forest with twinkling lights, a gingerbread-house setting, or smaller accents such as themed stickers, a Santa hat, candy canes, or a holiday frame. Adapt the colors to your existing channel identity rather than treating every seasonal element as a separate theme.

Plan a compact set of scenes so viewers see the same visual language before, during, and after the main content:
- Starting soon: Use a seasonal background and a clear message that the stream has not begun.
- Live: Keep the primary content prominent, with restrained decoration around the edges.
- BRB: Make it obvious that you have stepped away and give the screen a different purpose from the live scene.
- Ending: Close with a seasonal sign-off and any channel information viewers need.
Streamlabs’ guide describes these scene types and adding image files as sources. Its documented options include installing an overlay from its library, importing a .overlay file, building scenes manually, or using Streamlabs overlays in OBS through its plugin or by importing scenes. Choose overlay formats and canvas dimensions
Static or animated
For a static overlay that needs transparent areas, Elgato’s OBS overlay guidance recommends PNG. For an animated overlay with transparency, it recommends WEBM. Transparency lets the scene background or camera feed show through instead of placing an opaque rectangle over it. Check that your chosen streaming software supports the file and transparency behavior before building the full layout.
Match the overlay to the output
Elgato lists 16:9, 4:3, 9:16, and 1:1 as common aspect ratios. Choose the ratio for the actual stream canvas, not just the device on which you design the graphic. An overlay made for a horizontal canvas may crop or crowd important elements when used in a vertical or square output.

If your webcam should appear in a nonrectangular shape, Elgato says a mask file can keep the camera feed within that shape. Treat the mask and the visible frame as separate parts of the camera design, and check their alignment in the live scene.
Place decoration without blocking the stream
Think of the background, webcam frame, and social bar as separate design elements. Elgato describes webcam overlays as frames and social bars as space for handles or other information. Place bars near the top or bottom where they do not obstruct primary content. Keep all decoration clear of gameplay, captions, key on-screen information, and the visible webcam area.

- Preview the complete scene at the intended output size; a detail that looks small on a large editing canvas can dominate on a phone.
- Check that text and handles remain legible against both the background and any changing content underneath.
- Keep the webcam frame aligned to the actual camera crop, especially if using a mask.
- Use seasonal details as accents; if a viewer must look through decoration to follow the stream, remove or reposition it.
Add a seasonal segment viewers can join
Decorations can set the mood, while a simple activity gives the stream a shared focus. OneStream Live’s holiday guide suggests options such as greeting viewers, cooking or making ornaments, wrapping gifts, asking about audience traditions, running polls, or holding small giveaways. These are programming ideas, not evidence that a particular activity will increase viewership.
- Use a greeting or question to invite viewers to share a holiday tradition.
- For a cooking, ornament-making, or gift-wrapping segment, arrange the scene so the hands-on activity remains visible and the overlay does not compete with it.
- Use a poll or small giveaway only if it fits your channel and you can explain how viewers participate.
Check asset rights before going live
Use graphics, animations, music, and other assets only when you have the necessary rights. YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content. If copyrighted content is identified, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. YouTube also warns that a stream may be interrupted even if you have licensed the material when your channel has not been added to the rights holder’s Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and resolve permissions and allowlisting before the event.
