What Hokko Spaces is
Hokko Spaces is a compact creative sandbox from Robert Tatnell at Wonderscope Games, published by Team17. Instead of presenting a large life-simulation town, it focuses on building small, detailed diorama-style spaces. You arrange objects, decorate miniature environments, unlock friendly residents through straightforward goals, and watch Hokko characters move around and interact with the places you create.

The design goal is deliberately smaller and more focused than Hokko Life. Tatnell described it in the June 6, 2026 Steam Community announcement as a bite-size experience built around miniature scenes, cute objects, and short creative sessions. That makes it a better fit for players who enjoy arranging a scene and refining its details than for anyone looking primarily for a long checklist of farming, fishing, crafting, and town-management systems.

- Build miniature worlds: Create compact spaces rather than expanding one large town indefinitely.
- Decorate: Place the planned item catalog to shape the look and mood of each diorama.
- Unlock residents: Complete simple goals to bring additional Hokko characters into your spaces.
- Observe interactions: Residents potter about and respond to objects and environments you have arranged.
- Adjust presentation: Change time of day, weather, and seasons, then use the camera mode to frame scenes.
The camera includes filters, framing controls, and focus adjustments. Those tools are central to the miniature presentation: you can treat a finished space like a small photographed model rather than viewing it only as a conventional game level.
All items are designed for the game itself. The announcement does not describe a player-created-content system, marketplace, or workshop in which users upload assets for other players. If sharing custom creations is essential to your purchase decision, do not assume that feature exists.
Release status and what you can buy now
The official FAQ says, “Release Date is planned for later this year.” In the context of the June 6, 2026 announcement, that means later in 2026, but no day-specific date is published in the material currently available here. The announcement names Steam and Nintendo Switch and says the developer is planning a simultaneous launch.

A playtest is not the same as the final game: features, content, stability, and saves can change, and participation does not establish the eventual launch price.
The Switch version is confirmed as planned, but a regional Nintendo eShop product page or confirmed retailer listing is needed before you can verify its price, purchase button, download size, age rating, language list, or launch-day availability. Do not interpret the simultaneous-launch intention as proof that every region will receive a physical copy or identical timing.
PC or Nintendo Switch: which version is better?
There is no universal winner. PC is the practical recommendation for a first purchase because the Steam playtest is available now and Steam Deck is reported to work well in the official FAQ. Switch is the better choice when playing in handheld or tabletop mode matters more than getting access early.

Choose PC when access and flexibility come first
Select Steam if you want to test the concept before committing, prefer mouse-and-keyboard placement, or already use Steam Deck. The game has complete gamepad support, so buying on PC does not force you to play with a keyboard. Steam also gives you a straightforward way to follow updates as the playtest moves toward launch.

This recommendation is based on access and published features, not independent frame-rate, resolution, loading-time, or image-quality testing. No authoritative benchmark for Hokko Spaces has been published in the available official material.
Choose Switch when portability is the deciding feature
Switch is the natural fit if your creative sessions happen on a sofa, in bed, during travel, or in tabletop mode with another person nearby. The planned version should also remove the need to choose between a desktop setup and a separate handheld PC. However, wait until Nintendo or an authorized retailer posts the product page so you can confirm the exact edition, price, storage requirement, and release date for your region.
Editions, pricing, and physical releases
The official FAQ states that pricing has not been decided. No standard launch price is available, and there is no published regional price to convert. Do not use the price of Hokko Life, another sandbox game, or a generic indie-game estimate as a substitute.
The official material reviewed does not list a standard-versus-deluxe comparison, collector package, soundtrack bundle, art book, physical cartridge, or other special edition. That absence is important: you should not preorder a supposed deluxe version, assume a cartridge will exist, or budget for bonus items until Team17, Wonderscope Games, Steam, or Nintendo announces them.

- Confirm that the product is Hokko Spaces, not the earlier game Hokko Life.

- Open the official Steam listing for Hokko Spaces and sign in to your Steam account.
- Use the listing’s playtest enrollment or access control, if Steam presents one for your account.
- Install the test build on a Windows PC or compatible Steam Deck storage location.
- Launch with a mouse and keyboard or pair a supported gamepad; complete gamepad support is listed by the developer.
- Spend enough time creating more than one small space. Test object placement, camera framing, focus, filters, and changes to time of day or weather.
- Check whether your preferred control method feels precise, and note any bugs or missing features before deciding whether to wait for launch.
Because the playtest is not the final release, do not buy hardware or accessories based on unverified performance assumptions. The official material does not provide frame-rate targets, resolution figures, minimum PC specifications, or a confirmed save-transfer policy for the test.
Do you need Hokko Life first?
No. Hokko Life is the earlier released game, not an expansion, edition, or prerequisite for Hokko Spaces. The official FAQ says the two games will not affect one another and that there is currently no cross-game functionality. Owning Hokko Life therefore does not unlock characters, items, locations, currency, or other content in Hokko Spaces.

Those Hokko Life specifications belong to Hokko Life and must not be treated as Hokko Spaces requirements. Buy Hokko Life first only if you specifically want its larger life-sim feature set or need a currently released Hokko game while waiting.

For a player who wants to experiment before launch
Choose Steam and start with the playtest. This route gives you the clearest evidence about whether arranging miniature scenes, adjusting the camera, and watching residents interact is enjoyable for you. Keep expectations limited to the test build and wait for the final price and release details before making a second purchase decision.
For a Steam Deck owner
Steam is the most direct option because the FAQ says Steam Deck works well. Use the playtest to confirm your own comfort with text size, camera control, battery life, and placement precision. Those personal factors are different from an official compatibility statement, so do not assume every Deck model or control layout will feel identical.
For a dedicated handheld or family-room player
Wait for the Switch listing and select that version once the regional store page confirms the details. Portability is the main reason to choose Switch; it is not currently possible to justify the choice with a confirmed price, cartridge, or technical-performance advantage.

For someone seeking a deep life simulation
Hokko Spaces may feel intentionally limited if your priority is farming progression, fishing, bug collecting, a large town, or a broad daily routine. Those systems are associated with Hokko Life, while Spaces is presented as a concentrated miniature-building experience. Choose between them by the structure you want, not by assuming Spaces is a sequel that contains everything from Life.

Do not buy on the expectation of a workshop or player-authored item ecosystem. The announcement says the catalog is designed for the game and does not describe a player-created-content system. The documented feature set is personal construction and in-game camera presentation.

The Windows and storage figures published for Hokko Life describe that 2022 release. They are not a technical requirement sheet for Hokko Spaces.

Expecting ownership bonuses
The FAQ says Hokko Life does not affect Hokko Spaces and that there is no current cross-game functionality. Buying the earlier game will not provide a documented discount, unlock, or bonus in the new one.
Expecting user-generated item sharing
The announced catalog is made for the game itself, and no player-created-content system is described. If a store page later advertises sharing tools, evaluate that as a new feature announcement rather than an existing assumption.
A practical purchase checklist
- Decide whether you need access now. If yes, PC via the Steam playtest is the only documented early-access route.
