Hogwarts Legacy supports both autosaves and manual saves, and the game can hold multiple character runs. A Steam Community discussion quoting a Warner Bros. Games support reply reports four character slots, with five autosaves and ten manual saves per character, although those exact limits are not currently confirmed on the public support page and may vary by platform or version.
Your Hogwarts house is chosen near the beginning and cannot be treated as a simple mid-game setting. To experience another house, create another character. Choices do matter in selected quests and storylines, but the official FAQ is explicit that there is no morality meter and that Hogwarts Legacy is not four wholly separate campaigns.

How Hogwarts Legacy saves your progress
The game uses two kinds of progress records:
- Autosaves: Warner Bros. Games Support says the game records progress automatically at key moments.
- Manual saves: You can create a save file yourself so you can preserve a particular point in a run.
Autosaving is useful for routine progress, but it is not a substitute for a deliberate backup before a major decision. An autosave can update after you have passed the moment you wanted to revisit. Use a manual save whenever you want a stable restore point.
Character slots and save slots are different
A character slot represents a separate playthrough: a new witch or wizard with an independent house choice, quest progress, gear and relationships. A save slot is a point-in-time record inside that character’s run. Creating a second save does not create a second character; it only preserves another state of the same run.

| Item | What it stores | Reported capacity | How firmly the figure is established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character slot | A separate playable run | 4 | Reported in a 2023 Steam Community discussion quoting a WB Games support response; check your platform and version. |
| Autosave slot | Automatic checkpoints for one character | 5 per character | Same community report; the current public support page reviewed does not restate the exact number. |
| Manual-save slot | A player-created restore point for one character | 10 per character | Same community report; treat it as a reported limit rather than a platform-wide guarantee. |
Menus and limits can change with platform updates. If your game shows a different number, follow the capacity shown in your own Save or Load screen rather than deleting a useful file to match an older report.
How to keep a run safe
Use a manual save before an important quest
- Finish any conversation or exploration you do not want to repeat.
- Open the pause menu and choose the game’s Save or Save Game command. The wording and menu location can differ slightly by platform and version.
- Select an available manual-save entry instead of relying only on the newest autosave.
- Wait for the save confirmation before closing the game or changing applications.
The sources confirm that manual saves exist, but they do not guarantee that every dialogue scene or combat encounter permits saving. If the command is unavailable, move to a safe point and try again.
Keep a rotation instead of overwriting one file
Use several manual entries for a long-running character: one recent file, one before a major quest, and one older fallback. A rotation protects you from loading a file that was created after an unwanted outcome. With a reported ten manual slots per character, rotating files also makes it easier to preserve different decision points, but leave room for the game to create its autosaves.
Start a new character for another house
Do not overwrite your existing character merely to see a different house. Return to the character-selection or new-game flow and create another character slot. This keeps the first run intact while giving the new witch or wizard an independent house identity and progression path.
The exact cloud-save, cross-platform and cross-generation behavior is not established by the sources used here. Do not assume that a character will appear automatically on another console, PC storefront or generation; verify the platform’s own transfer documentation before deleting local files.

Can you change your Hogwarts house?
The official Hogwarts Legacy FAQ says players can choose their Hogwarts house at the start of the game. That makes the house selection an early character decision, not a normal setting that you can freely toggle later.
If you want to play as a different house, the dependable approach is a second character. The reported four character slots provide room for multiple house identities, but the number is secondary-source information and should be checked against the slots visible in your edition.
What a new house run changes
- Your character’s house identity and associated common-room experience change.
- Some house-specific flavor, introductions or quest presentation may differ.
- Your equipment, level, collectibles and quest state belong to the new character rather than carrying over from the first one.
Do not expect the entire main campaign to be rewritten four times. The official materials confirm the house choice but do not describe four wholly different main plots.
Do choices matter in Hogwarts Legacy?
Yes, but selectively. The official FAQ says there is no morality system
, while also explaining that quests and storylines present difficult choices that influence the witch or wizard you choose to become. In practical terms, the game has decisions without a universal good-versus-evil score.
What the absence of a morality meter means
There is no single alignment bar that rises when you are kind and falls when you use a harsher response. A dialogue option can still affect a quest, a relationship, a reward or a later event without changing a global numerical morality value. It is therefore inaccurate to describe every dark spell, rude answer or compassionate response as movement on a hidden karma scale.

Most dialogue is not a permanent branch
Walkthroughs from GameWith and Game8 describe a limited set of decisions as having more visible consequences, while many ordinary conversations mainly change a line of dialogue or the immediate tone of a scene. Those guides are not an official, exhaustive choice matrix, so treat their individual outcomes as guide-reported rather than proof that every choice works the same way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich choices have the clearest consequences?
Spoiler warning: The examples below name quest and ending-related material. Skip this section if you want to discover those outcomes without advance information.
Sebastian-related quest decisions
Third-party walkthroughs identify decisions in Sebastian’s questline as among the choices that can produce more tangible differences later. The guides differ in presentation and do not establish a complete official list of every dependency. If that storyline matters to you, make a manual save before a major decision and keep the file until you are satisfied with the result.
Choices associated with the ending
Guides also report that selected late-game decisions can affect which ending presentation you see. This does not mean that every earlier conversation creates a separate ending, nor that the game has four house-specific finales. The safest way to test an outcome without replaying the whole game is to retain a pre-decision manual save, subject to the game’s saving restrictions at that point.
Rewards and quest outcomes
Some decisions can change a reward, a follow-up event or whether a particular quest path is available. Because no official comprehensive table is provided in the cited materials, do not assume that a guide’s list covers every variation or that an unlisted line is consequence-free.

What replayability does Hogwarts Legacy actually offer?
Replay value comes from combining a new character, a different house identity, selected quest decisions and the desire to discover more of the wizarding world. It is real, but it is not the same as four entirely separate role-playing campaigns.
| Replay factor | What changes | What not to expect |
|---|---|---|
| House identity | A different starting house and related presentation | A wholly unique main story for each house |
| Character build and role-play | New choices about spells, gear and how you approach encounters | An official claim that one build permanently locks every later quest |
| Quest decisions | Selected outcomes, relationships, rewards or later events | Every dialogue line producing a major branch |
| Exploration | More discoveries, collectibles and optional activities on another run | A guarantee that all content must be repeated in a new order |
| Save flexibility | Separate characters and manual restore points | Automatic transfer of saves between platforms |
Can you finish side quests after the main story?
A third-party replay guide reports that unfinished side quests remain available after the main story. Treat that as guide-reported behavior rather than a publisher guarantee for every edition or update. If you care about a particular companion or side quest, record its status in your own quest log before assuming it will remain available.
Is replaying another house worth it?
A second run is most worthwhile if you want a different role-playing identity, want to see house-specific flavor, or deliberately make different decisions in the limited questlines that react to them. It is less compelling if you expect every mission, map region and ending to be replaced by a house-exclusive campaign.

Plan the first character
- Choose a house based on the identity you want for the whole run, not on the assumption that it can be changed later.
- Use autosaves for normal progress, but create manual saves before decisions you may want to revisit.
- Keep notes about unresolved companion quests and choices if you are planning a completion-focused run.
Preserve the first run before starting the next
- Make a current manual save for the character you are leaving.
- Confirm that the file appears in the Load list before exiting.
- Create the next character through the game’s new-character flow rather than selecting the old character and overwriting its saves.
- Check the house selection carefully during the new introduction.
Use a decision-focused second run
Instead of repeating every activity immediately, concentrate on the questlines and companion relationships where guides report more visible variation. Keep a pre-choice manual save and a post-choice save when the game allows it. This gives you a way to compare outcomes without claiming that every conversation is a permanent branch.

Common save and replay mistakes
Mistake: treating an autosave as a permanent archive
Autosaves update at key moments and can replace an earlier checkpoint. Keep a manual file for any scene you may want to revisit.

Mistake: confusing a new save with a new character
Another save entry inside the same character does not reset the house or create a separate run. Use a new character slot for that.
Mistake: deleting the first run to change houses
House choice happens at the start. Preserve the existing character and begin another one instead of trying to convert the original.
Mistake: assuming every choice changes the plot
The official FAQ’s no-morality clarification and guide-level evidence point to selective consequences, not universal branching. Read a choice in the context of its quest rather than expecting a game-wide alignment response.

Edition and platform qualifications
Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player RPG set in the 1800s wizarding world. The official FAQ distinguishes physical and digital purchases and lists supported platforms. It also notes that a physical copy requires an internet connection for the Day 1 patch. Those installation requirements are separate from the in-game save limits, so check the current platform listing and edition details before purchase or an upgrade.
The FAQ also names Hogwarts Legacy: The Official Game Guide, published by Scholastic, as a companion book. Availability and edition details can change, so treat it as optional reference material rather than a requirement for understanding your saves or choices.
The practical verdict
Hogwarts Legacy is replayable because it lets you maintain multiple character runs, select a house at the beginning and make a smaller number of consequential quest decisions. Autosaves protect routine progress; manual saves protect the moments you specifically want to revisit. Create a separate character for another house, keep a rotating set of manual files, and approach detailed choice lists as guide-reported advice rather than an official promise of four radically different stories.
