Hindustan Zinc is a listed Indian metals company focused on zinc, lead and silver; Vedanta Limited is a broader natural-resources group that reports owning 64.9% of HZL. That makes the comparison one of different analytical layers: HZL’s standalone operations and risks versus Vedanta’s consolidated portfolio, which includes HZL alongside other businesses. The ownership figure is Vedanta’s company-reported figure on its business page, accessed in 2026, not an independently verified current shareholder-register figure.
What each company does
Hindustan Zinc: an integrated zinc, lead and silver business
Vedanta describes Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL) as an integrated operator in India. Its business chain covers zinc-lead mines, zinc and lead smelters, silver production and related facilities in northwest India. Vedanta’s business page lists five zinc-lead mines, a rock-phosphate mine, hydrometallurgical zinc smelters, lead smelters, a pyrometallurgical zinc-lead smelter, sulphuric-acid facilities and captive power plants. These are company-reported facility details and may change. HZL is listed on the NSE and BSE. Vedanta’s HZL business profile

In the FY2025–26 integrated-report search material, Vedanta reported HZL revenue of ₹39,057 crore and EBITDA of ₹22,056 crore, and described plans to expand toward 2 MTPA of integrated metal capacity. These are HZL figures and plans attributed to Vedanta’s FY2025–26 reporting material; they are not Vedanta group totals. The surfaced passage does not establish the detailed assumptions or timetable for the expansion. Vedanta investor financial results
Vedanta Limited: a multi-business natural-resources group
Vedanta Limited has a much wider operating mix, spanning zinc, copper, aluminium, oil and gas, iron ore, steel, ferrochrome and other natural-resource businesses. A shareholder in Vedanta is therefore exposed to several commodity markets and operating segments, not just HZL’s zinc, lead and silver chain. Vedanta’s business overview
#1 Best Overall
Keep the legal entities distinct: this comparison is between listed Vedanta Limited and listed Hindustan Zinc Limited. Vedanta Resources Limited is the ultimate parent discussed in group materials, while Vedanta Zinc International operates zinc assets outside India; neither should be substituted for Vedanta Limited in a comparison of the two listed companies.
How the investment exposure differs
| Comparison point | Hindustan Zinc | Vedanta Limited |
|---|---|---|
| Business exposure | Concentrated on an integrated zinc, lead and silver operation in India, with related facilities. | Spread across several metals and natural-resource businesses, including aluminium, oil and gas, iron ore and steel. |
| What drives results | Most directly linked to the prices and demand for zinc, lead and silver, as well as mine and smelter performance, costs and expansion execution. | Influenced by commodity prices, volumes, operating delivery, currency effects and financing across a wider portfolio. Vedanta’s FY2024–25 financial review says commodity prices materially affect group results. |
| Financial figures cited here | Vedanta’s FY2025–26 reporting material surfaced HZL revenue of ₹39,057 crore and EBITDA of ₹22,056 crore. | Vedanta reported FY2024–25 consolidated gross debt of ₹73,853 crore, net debt of ₹53,250 crore and net debt/EBITDA of 1.2x. |
| Key additional analytical layer | Assess HZL’s own operations and its relationship with its controlling shareholder. | Assess group-level debt, financing, capital allocation and restructuring as well as individual businesses. |
The figures in the table cover different entities and financial periods, so they are not a like-for-like financial comparison. Vedanta’s debt and leverage figures are FY2024–25 consolidated group measures, not HZL standalone debt or current FY2026 balance-sheet figures. HZL’s revenue and EBITDA figures are from Vedanta’s FY2025–26 reporting material. Vedanta annual reports

Commodity prices, currency and earnings sensitivity
Vedanta’s FY2024–25 financial review recorded average prices of US$2,875 per tonne for zinc, US$2,046 per tonne for lead and US$30.39 per ounce for silver during that reporting period. These are historical averages reported by Vedanta, not forecasts or current market prices. The same review says rupee depreciation benefited EBITDA because costs were local while pricing was predominantly linked to the US dollar. That is a description of the period’s reported effect, not a guarantee that currency movements will always help earnings. Vedanta FY2024–25 annual report and financial review

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor HZL, concentration makes zinc, lead and silver prices and the performance of its connected mining and smelting chain central issues. For Vedanta, broader diversification can reduce dependence on any one commodity, but it also means results respond to more price cycles, business-specific operating conditions and group-wide financial decisions. Diversification alone does not establish that one share is less volatile or safer.

Risks to examine in each company
Hindustan Zinc
- Commodity and demand exposure: changes in zinc, lead and silver markets can affect the business directly.
- Operating execution: mine output, smelter performance, energy and other input costs, and the returns from expansion all matter to an integrated operator.
- Long-term operating risks: reserve replacement, safety, environmental compliance and regulation warrant review. Vedanta’s FY2024–25 asset overview reports HZL zinc reserves and resources in India of 453.2 million tonnes; that is an issuer-reported reserves-and-resources figure, not a production measure or guarantee of economic recovery.
- Ownership and governance: consider the influence of Vedanta as reported controlling shareholder, alongside HZL’s own filings and disclosures.
This is a practical risk checklist, not a complete statement of HZL’s current official risk factors. Vedanta FY2024–25 asset overview
Vedanta Limited
- Multiple commodity cycles: a broad portfolio diversifies business exposure, but leaves results sensitive to conditions across several markets.
- Operating and volume delivery: assess whether individual businesses meet production and operating expectations.
- Debt and financing: evaluate consolidated debt, financing costs and cash generation at the group level rather than inferring them from HZL’s operations.
- Capital allocation: capital expenditure and dividend decisions across businesses can affect financing needs and shareholder outcomes.
- Currency: exchange-rate effects depend on the balance between local costs and foreign-currency-linked revenues or pricing.
- Restructuring execution: corporate changes can alter the legal-entity and investment structure and should be assessed based on implementation details.
Vedanta’s FY2024–25 financial review discusses commodity prices, foreign exchange, volumes and financing as influences on group results. Its financial metrics for that year should not be treated as current FY2026 figures. Vedanta FY2024–25 financial review

What Vedanta’s demerger updates mean for the comparison
Vedanta’s announcement listing records an NCLT order dated December 16, 2025, sanctioning its demerger scheme, and a post-demerger update presentation dated April 29, 2026. Those entries indicate material restructuring activity, but they do not by themselves establish the latest implementation status, share-entitlement details or the resulting structure for every investor. Check Vedanta’s latest announcements and filings for those specifics before relying on an assumed post-demerger arrangement. A demerger does not automatically create value. Vedanta announcements

- Choose the entity and reporting date. Compare HZL standalone figures with Vedanta Limited standalone figures if assessing the listed companies’ own accounts; use consolidated figures only when explicitly evaluating the group. Do not compare HZL revenue or EBITDA with Vedanta consolidated debt as though they were matching measures.
- Match periods and definitions. Use the same fiscal period and check how each company defines debt, net debt, EBITDA, reserves and capacity. The cited HZL operating figures and Vedanta debt figures above cover different years and scopes.
- Compare operating drivers. Consider HZL’s zinc-lead-silver chain and expansion execution separately from Vedanta’s portfolio-wide commodity, volume and cost mix.
- Review ownership and capital decisions. Examine controlling-shareholder relationships, capital expenditure, dividends and financing at the level relevant to the security being assessed.
- Verify restructuring status. Use current exchange filings and company announcements to identify which legal entity and share entitlement apply after any demerger implementation.
The cited materials do not provide a matched, current standalone risk and financial comparison for both companies. They support a difference in business mix and analytical scope, not a ranking of which stock is safer or better.
