One hearing-memory setting can determine whether an agent synthesizes a judge-wide pattern or keeps each hearing isolated. In a first-person account of Tareekh, a legal-practice memory aid, Karunya Muddana reports that Hindsight’s default consolidation grouped observations by the complete set of tags. Because case and opposing-counsel tags varied from hearing to hearing, related records before the same judge did not consolidate together. Adding explicit judge, counsel, and case scopes gave the system overlapping views of the same records. That is a configuration lesson—not evidence that an agent can reliably predict how a judge will rule.
Why could the agent recall hearings but not connect them?
Tareekh is described by its author as a memory aid for litigators. Lawyers upload diary photographs, court order sheets, deeds, legal notices, and typed notes. An ingestion pipeline uses OCR, segmentation, repair, and review before storing hearing-level entries in Hindsight. The project description names FastAPI, Next.js, Gemini on Vertex AI, a local Docker deployment of Hindsight, and SQLite for a case registry. The author says each lawyer has one memory bank, so matters before a given judge can be considered together. These are descriptions of the project, not an independent audit. The intended role is to remember and cite records, not to give legal advice. Muddana’s account was published on 29 September 2026.

The issue was not simply whether the system could retrieve a hearing. A memory can be individually findable and still fail to contribute to a synthesis with related memories. Muddana’s example hearing records had tags such as case:C5, judge:J1, and counsel:OC4. When a different hearing involved another case or opposing counsel, its full tag combination differed. Under the default consolidation behavior, that difference meant the observations did not land in the same consolidation group just because both records included judge:J1.

Hindsight’s Retain API documentation defines observation_scopes as controlling which observations a memory contributes to during consolidation. In other words, scopes determine which evidence is synthesized together; they are not merely labels for later filtering. The documented default, combined, creates a consolidation pass over all tags together. The reference also documents per_tag, which creates a pass for each individual tag, and custom scopes for specifying other desired combinations. Hindsight’s Retain API reference stresses that scopes are isolated: observations match the exact scope tags.

That isolation is why adding a judge tag alone does not automatically override the default. If the system consolidates the complete combination of case, judge, and counsel tags, two otherwise relevant hearings with different case or counsel values have different combinations. A judge-level view requires a scope that matches the judge independently of those changing tags.
How did the author configure overlapping views?
Muddana reports adding three explicit scopes to each retained memory: one for its judge, one for opposing counsel, and one for the case. The design lets a single hearing contribute to separate synthesis paths: judge-wide learning across matters, counsel-wide learning across matters, and a case-level view. It is useful when the application needs summaries along several entity boundaries rather than only a summary of one complete tag combination.

The documented behavior and names are from the Retain API reference. The table describes the options at the level established by that reference; an application still has to supply scopes that match its intended grouping.

In Muddana’s design, observations are consolidated knowledge, while mental models are query-defined summaries that the answering agent reads. The account describes models for each judge and opposing counsel, as well as models for commitments and the lawyer’s own patterns. These are distinct stages: scopes decide which records contribute to consolidated observations; a mental model’s source query determines which memories are selected for a summary.

Hindsight’s operations reference says refreshing a mental model reruns its source_query, summarizes the selected memories, and updates the model. Refresh may be manual or automatic when configured. A model is therefore a prepared summary, not independent proof that a pattern inferred from its source memories is correct. See the operations reference for consolidation and refresh behavior.
What do the reported hearings show—and not show?
The DEV Community account gives examples from sample practice records. Muddana reports that at a Greenfield hearing on 22 June 2026, a third adjournment request was rejected and cross-examination was closed as nil, with Rs 3,000 in costs. The article also reports a Seabreeze specific-performance hearing on 9 July 2025, when the judge refused 14 documents tendered without an index and imposed Rs 2,000 in costs. It mentions a memo rejected on 11 March 2026 for lack of prior service, without giving an amount. These are case details reported by the author, not independently authenticated court outcomes or population statistics. The author also notes that a judge model based on three hearings is thin. The examples do not establish a reliable judicial tendency or support predicting a future decision. The original account provides the examples.

How should a developer apply the lesson safely?
- Start with the question the application needs to answer. If it asks about a judge across changing cases and counsel, the consolidation scope must not require those other tags to remain identical.
- Choose between whole-combination, per-tag, and custom scopes based on which summaries users need. Use explicit overlapping scopes when the same memory should contribute to judge-, counsel-, and case-level views.
- Keep query design separate from consolidation design: the mental model’s source query selects memories for its summary, while scopes determine what evidence is synthesized together.
- Make synthesized statements traceable to underlying records. In a legal workflow, show citations, distinguish historical observations from inference, and communicate uncertainty; these are design safeguards advocated by the author, not a legal-compliance assessment.
- Treat model output as a navigation aid to records, not as a prediction or substitute for legal judgment. A small set of hearings cannot establish how a judge will act in a future matter.
