Hindsight: How to Add Memory to an AI Agent

Hindsight lets agents retain, retrieve and reason over structured memories across interactions. Here’s how to integrate it, isolate user data and evaluate results.

Hindsight helps an AI agent use past interactions by retaining information in a structured memory store, recalling relevant details later, and reflecting on what those memories mean. It does not automatically retrain the model or change its weights after every conversation. To build with it, choose a memory boundary, connect the client or API, add retain and recall calls to the agent’s workflow, and test retrieval and privacy on your own tasks.

What “learning from every interaction” means in Hindsight

Hindsight is a memory layer for an agent, not a foundation model. The agent can accumulate useful context across sessions because the system stores and retrieves information; the underlying model is not thereby fine-tuned or having its weights updated after each interaction. The Hindsight project describes its goal as creating “smarter agents that learn over time,” but that phrase refers to evolving memory, not automatic model training. Hindsight project

This distinction matters when designing the system: memory can help a model answer a later question with facts or preferences from an earlier exchange, but it does not guarantee the model will always recall them correctly. The result depends on what the application retains, how it searches, and whether the retrieved context is relevant to the task.

How Hindsight organizes and uses memory

The system-demonstration paper describes four memory networks that distinguish kinds of information rather than treating a conversation as one undifferentiated transcript. Christopher Latimer and coauthors write that these networks “separate objective facts from subjective beliefs, giving developers visibility into what an agent knows versus what it believes.” ACL 2026 paper

  • World: information about objective facts.
  • Experience: records of events or interactions.
  • Observation: inferences or observations derived from information.
  • Opinion: subjective beliefs, preferences, or judgments.

Three operations form the practical memory loop:

  1. Retain interaction information that may be useful later.
  2. Recall information relevant to a new question or task.
  3. Reflect across stored memories to synthesize or update understanding.

The research paper describes retrieval that combines vector search, keyword matching, graph traversal, and temporal filtering, with PostgreSQL and pgvector as the storage foundation. In practice, this makes memory a structured, queryable bank rather than simply replaying a full chat transcript. Hindsight research paper

Plan memory boundaries before connecting an agent

A bank is an isolated memory store associated with a user, agent, or project. Decide which entity owns a memory before retaining user-specific details: a single shared bank can create cross-user context errors if the application does not isolate or filter records correctly. Hindsight documents bank isolation and metadata filters for separating user-specific information. Hindsight documentation and repository

  • Create separate banks for users, agents, or projects whose information must not mix.
  • Define metadata fields that the application can use to filter memories at recall time.
  • Retain only information the product has a reason to use later, and test that a recall for one user cannot surface another user’s details.
  • Decide how the application should handle corrections and time-sensitive facts, then test updates and temporal retrieval explicitly.

Build the integration in five steps

  1. Choose a deployment. For local development, the official project documents Docker and Python-package options. For a managed setup, Hindsight Cloud provides an API endpoint. Confirm current installation instructions and platform details in the official repository.
  2. Connect a client. Official materials provide Python, Node.js/TypeScript, Go, CLI, and REST options. Use the client that fits the application’s language and deployment model; follow its current examples rather than assuming all clients expose identical options.
  3. Retain useful interaction evidence. After an exchange, call retain with information that could matter in a future task. Avoid treating every line of conversation as equally valuable; structure and metadata should support the later queries the product expects.
  4. Recall at the point of need. Before generating an answer that may depend on prior context, call recall with the current question or task and provide the returned memories to the model as context.
  5. Add reflection where synthesis is needed. Call reflect when the agent needs to reason across stored information or update its understanding, rather than using it for every simple retrieval.

The repository also documents an LLM wrapper that can automatically recall before a model call and retain the conversation afterward. MCP is an alternative integration path for agent clients that use tools. Choose explicit calls when you need tight control over what gets stored or retrieved; a wrapper may reduce integration work, but should still be evaluated for fit with your retention and privacy rules. Choose between self-hosting and Hindsight Cloud

Consideration Self-hosted Hindsight Cloud
Operations You operate the service and database. The service is managed; your application integrates through an API.
Infrastructure and data control More control over deployment and data infrastructure. Less infrastructure to operate directly; review the service’s current terms and data handling for your needs.
Integration Use the local service and supported client or API options. Connect to the Cloud API endpoint.
Billing Infrastructure and operations are your responsibility; no Hindsight Cloud usage billing applies. Documentation describes pay-as-you-go and enterprise billing, with charges measured by operations, tokens, calls, or storage depending on the applicable terms. Check the live billing documentation for current rates and conditions.

Self-hosted production deployments require operating Hindsight and PostgreSQL with a supported vector extension. The installation documentation lists Linux, macOS, and Windows support, and the project documents Kubernetes Helm installation with external PostgreSQL. Confirm platform-specific requirements in the installation guide before selecting an environment.

Evaluate memory on your own workload

Published benchmark results show what Hindsight achieved in particular experimental settings; they do not guarantee a production agent’s accuracy. Latimer and coauthors’ 2026 ACL paper reports 83.6% on LongMemEval and 83.2% on LoCoMo with a 20B open-source model, and 91.4% on LongMemEval with Gemini-3 Pro. ACL 2026 paper

The 2025 arXiv paper reports a comparison with a 20B backbone in which LongMemEval rose from 39.0% for the paper’s full-context baseline to 83.6% with Hindsight, while LoCoMo rose from 75.78% to 85.67%. It also reports up to 89.61% on LoCoMo with larger backbones. These figures are tied to the paper’s benchmarks, models, and setup; they should not be generalized to other models or tasks. • Whether important facts are retained, including corrections and changes over time.
  • Whether later questions retrieve the right information rather than merely similar wording.
  • Whether the agent distinguishes facts, past experiences, observations, and opinions appropriately.
  • Whether retrieval works when relevant information is old, indirect, or mixed with unrelated context.
  • Whether bank and metadata boundaries prevent one user’s or project’s information appearing in another’s results.
  • Whether answers grounded in recalled memory remain accurate when the memory is incomplete or outdated.

Measure these outcomes on your own workload and model configuration. Benchmark scores are useful context, not a substitute for testing the agent’s actual retention, recall, update behavior, and isolation requirements.
