Hindsight Calls in Separate Event Loops: Why I Used a Fresh aiohttp Client Per Operation

A fresh loop and Hindsight client per worker can isolate loop-bound aiohttp state for synchronous callers, but stable async applications should usually reuse sessions within one loop.

Using a fresh event loop and Hindsight client for each call can isolate aiohttp’s loop-bound state when synchronous code needs to invoke an async-backed client. It is a containment strategy, not aiohttp’s general recommendation: aiohttp encourages reusing a session inside a stable event-loop lifecycle to benefit from its connection pool. The right choice depends on whether your application can keep one loop and client alive safely.

Why an aiohttp session cannot simply move between event loops

An aiohttp ClientSession is more than a request wrapper: it manages a connection pool and other asynchronous resources. Those resources are associated with the event loop active when the session is created. Creating a new loop does not make a session from an older loop safe to use on it.

The aiohttp FAQ says the lifecycle of asyncio objects should be shorter than the lifecycle of their event loop. It warns that a session can capture the loop on which it was created and may hang if it is later used after the loop context changes. See aiohttp’s FAQ on creating a ClientSession outside an event loop.

That does not mean you should create a new session for every request by default. aiohttp’s request lifecycle guide explains that a session should generally be reused across requests so its connection pool can do its job. The key is to reuse it within the loop that owns it, and close it before that loop shuts down.

What can go wrong when a background loop is replaced

A 2026 Hermes Agent issue describes one Hindsight integration failure: a background event loop was replaced while a cached aiohttp-backed client remained bound to the previous loop. Subsequent retain operations raised RuntimeError. The issue reporter listed Hindsight client 0.4.2, hindsight-client-api 0.3.1, aiohttp 3.11.16, Python 3.13.3, and Ubuntu 24.04. Those details describe that report, not a general compatibility guarantee or proof that every setup with those versions fails. See the Hermes Agent issue report.

The lifecycle implication is straightforward: if a loop is shut down or replaced, discard and close clients and sessions tied to it. Create replacements under the new loop before using them. Keeping a cached client while swapping out its owning loop leaves loop-bound state behind.

Why I put each Hindsight operation in its own worker

In the title-matched article, Lakshmi Vangari describes a synchronous boundary around each Hindsight operation: submit work to a thread pool, create the event loop and Hindsight client inside that worker, run the operation, then close the loop. The author’s stated choice was to give each operation a worker thread, a fresh loop, and a fresh client instance. This keeps those resources together for the duration of the call rather than reusing a client across changing loops.

This approach can suit a synchronous service that needs to call an async-backed client without making its entire request path asynchronous. The caller waits for a normal result, while the wrapper contains loop creation and cleanup. It should be treated as one integration pattern, not as an aiohttp best practice or a universally optimal Hindsight architecture.

Choose the lifecycle that matches your application

Design Resource ownership Trade-off
One stable async lifecycle A long-lived loop owns a reusable client; the client is explicitly closed before loop shutdown. Aligns with aiohttp’s session-reuse and connection-pooling guidance. Requires the surrounding application to manage async work and shutdown coherently.
Per-operation worker adapter Each worker creates and uses its own loop and Hindsight client for one operation, then closes the loop. Provides a sync-to-async boundary and isolates loop-bound resources, but blocks the caller and spends worker capacity while the call runs.
Replaceable background loop A background loop owns cached clients until it stops; clients must be closed or discarded before work moves to a replacement loop. Can support long-lived async work, but loop replacement must include explicit invalidation and recreation of all loop-bound clients.

Account for blocking, capacity, and timeouts

A worker-thread adapter is synchronous from the caller’s perspective: the caller waits for the worker’s result. If operations are slow, they occupy worker slots for longer. With a bounded executor, enough simultaneous slow calls can use all available slots, leaving new work waiting or unable to proceed depending on how the application handles submission and queueing.

Set worker capacity and backpressure deliberately. Decide what happens when all workers are busy, and monitor how long calls occupy them. A caller-side future timeout only limits how long the caller waits; it does not, by itself, prove that the underlying operation was cancelled. Ensure the worker still reaches its cleanup path when an operation fails or the caller stops waiting.

Practical lifecycle checks

  • Create each aiohttp session and its Hindsight client on the loop that will use them.
  • Reuse a session across requests when a stable loop owns it; close it before shutting down that loop.
  • If replacing a loop, close or discard every cached client and session associated with the old one before routing work to the new loop.
  • For a per-operation adapter, keep loop creation, client creation, operation execution, and cleanup together inside the worker.
  • For a fully async application, consider awaiting Hindsight operations within the application’s stable async lifecycle instead of adding a synchronous worker boundary.
