Etsy and Slack are documented historical examples of companies whose engineering teams described systems using Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP—the four components known as LAMP. Facebook is another high-profile historical PHP example, but the cited Meta article establishes PHP use alone, not the complete LAMP combination. These dated statements are evidence of past architecture, not confirmation of any company’s current production stack.
What does LAMP mean?
LAMP is shorthand for Linux, Apache HTTP Server, MySQL, and PHP. It describes a compatible set of technologies commonly used to build and run web applications; it does not mean every application must use only those products or that every company keeps the same architecture over time.

Current WordPress.org requirements illustrate that flexibility: WordPress supports PHP 8.3 or greater and MySQL 8.0 or MariaDB 10.11 or greater, requires HTTPS, and recommends Apache or Nginx. Those are software requirements, not evidence that WordPress.org or any named company runs that exact configuration. WordPress.org’s requirements show how a PHP/MySQL application can accommodate alternatives to parts of the traditional LAMP shorthand.

| Company | What its engineering source says | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Etsy | In a September 26, 2016 engineering post, Etsy described its stack as LAMP: Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. | A clear, dated company statement naming all four technologies; it does not verify Etsy’s current stack. |
| Slack | A Slack Engineering article called Slack a “distant descendant” of a conventional LAMP-stack application and said Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP played important roles on the server side. | A historical company engineering description naming all four; it is not confirmation of Slack’s complete present-day architecture. |
| A Meta engineering article dated May 31, 2011, said Facebook’s front end was written almost entirely in PHP. | Historical evidence of substantial PHP use, but the cited statement does not establish Linux, Apache, and MySQL as part of the same stack. |
What the company sources say
Etsy: an explicit LAMP description
In “API First Transformation at Etsy – Operations”, published September 26, 2016, Etsy engineering author Stefanie Schirmer wrote that Etsy “runs on a LAMP stack,” spelling out Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP. A separate Etsy engineering article describes etsy.com being served through Apache on Linux, with mostly PHP server-side code and MySQL data storage. Together, these are the clearest supplied company-source examples of the full combination, but both are historical.

Slack: a LAMP descendant
Slack Engineering’s “A Walkthrough Guide to Finding an Engineering Job at Slack” describes Slack as a “distant descendant” of a conventional LAMP-stack application and names Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP as important parts of its server-side system. That wording signals an evolution from a traditional stack rather than a claim that Slack remained an unchanged LAMP deployment.
Facebook: PHP evidence, not a full-stack claim
Meta’s “Visualizing Facebook’s PHP Codebase,” dated May 31, 2011, says Facebook’s front end was written almost entirely in PHP. This supports including Facebook among historical PHP users. It should not be stretched into proof that this article’s source documents all four LAMP components together at Facebook.

How to assess claims that a company uses LAMP
- Check the date. A company engineering post documents what its authors said at publication, not necessarily today’s infrastructure.
- Check which components are named. PHP use alone is not proof of a Linux, Apache, and MySQL deployment.
- Check what the source describes. A company’s production architecture is different evidence from a software product’s hosting requirements.
No attributable adoption count or percentage is established for companies using this exact four-part stack, so a reliable total cannot be given from these examples.
