Repeated measurements—not how you feel—are needed to identify it. Over time, blood pressure that remains uncontrolled can damage the heart, brain, kidneys, eyes, and blood vessels, though complications are not inevitable.
What counts as high blood pressure?
Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg): systolic pressure, the force when the heart beats, over diastolic pressure, the force between beats. Definitions differ by source and jurisdiction. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes high blood pressure as consistently at or above 130/80 mm Hg. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines hypertension as 140/90 mm Hg or higher and says diagnosis is based on elevated readings on two different days. These are distinct frameworks, not one universal cutoff. See the CDC overview and WHO fact sheet.

A single casual reading does not establish a diagnosis: pressure varies during the day, and clinicians consider repeated measurements and a person’s circumstances. If a reading is higher than expected, ask a healthcare professional how and when to recheck it rather than drawing a conclusion from one result.

What causes high blood pressure?
There is rarely one simple explanation. Risk reflects a mix of factors, and having one or more does not mean a person will necessarily develop hypertension. Some contributors can be changed; others, such as age and family history, cannot. The CDC summarizes these factors in its risk-factor guidance.

Factors a person cannot change
- Age: The chance of high blood pressure increases with age.
- Family history and genetics: A family history can raise risk.
Health conditions and everyday exposures
- Diet: An unhealthy diet, including too much salt and too few fruits and vegetables, is a risk factor.
- Physical inactivity and weight: Limited physical activity and overweight or obesity are associated with higher risk.
- Tobacco and excess alcohol: Both are recognized risk factors.
- Other health or environmental factors: Diabetes, kidney disease, and air pollution are also identified as relevant risks.
These factors describe risk at a population level; they do not assign blame or identify the cause of one individual’s readings.
Can high blood pressure happen without symptoms?
Yes. Most people with hypertension do not feel anything unusual. Feeling well cannot confirm that blood pressure is normal, and headache or other nonspecific discomfort alone cannot show that it is high. As WHO puts it, “The only way to know is to get your blood pressure checked.”

WHO estimated that 1.4 billion adults aged 30–79 worldwide had hypertension in 2024, or 33% of that age group; 44% of those with hypertension were unaware of it, and 23% had it controlled. Those estimates use WHO’s population and definition; they should not be compared directly with U.S. figures using a different age range or threshold.

Very high readings together with severe symptoms need immediate medical attention. Symptoms that can accompany very high blood pressure include severe headache, chest pain, dizziness, trouble breathing, nausea or vomiting, vision changes, confusion, and abnormal heart rhythm. NHLBI also identifies sudden severe headache, difficulty breathing, sudden severe abdominal, chest, or back pain, numbness or weakness, sudden vision change, and difficulty speaking as symptoms that call for immediate action. If these severe symptoms occur with a very high reading, seek emergency care; a symptom list cannot diagnose an emergency or safely rule one out. See NHLBI’s symptom guidance and the WHO fact sheet.

What are the long-term effects of uncontrolled high blood pressure?
Persistently elevated pressure strains arteries and the organs they supply. It raises the risk of complications; it does not mean every person with hypertension will develop them.
- Heart and arteries: Possible consequences include coronary artery disease, angina, heart attack, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, atherosclerosis, and aneurysm.
- Brain: Hypertension raises the risk of stroke and vascular dementia.
- Kidneys: It can contribute to kidney damage and kidney failure.
- Eyes: Damage to blood vessels in the eyes can affect vision.
For details on cardiovascular complications, see the American Heart Association’s overview; WHO and NHLBI also describe the broader effects of hypertension.

The scale is substantial: CDC reports that 48.1% of U.S. adults—119.9 million people—met its high blood pressure definition in estimates based on NHANES 2017–March 2020. That CDC measure counts systolic pressure greater than 130 or diastolic pressure greater than 80 mm Hg, or taking medication. CDC also reports that high blood pressure was a primary or contributing cause in 680,179 U.S. deaths in 2024. These U.S. figures use the definitions, periods, and data specified by CDC’s statistics page.

How to check blood pressure at home
A home monitor can help a healthcare professional assess readings over time, including whether treatment is working, but it does not replace appointments. The American Heart Association recommends an automatic, validated upper-arm cuff monitor with a cuff that fits. Wrist and finger monitors are not recommended for routine home use because their readings are less reliable. Do not stop prescribed medication because of home readings without first consulting your healthcare professional.

Take a consistent reading
- Avoid smoking, caffeine, and exercise for 30 minutes before measuring. Empty your bladder.
- Sit quietly for five minutes. Support your back, keep both feet flat, and rest your bare arm at heart level.
- Take two readings one minute apart.
- Measure at a consistent time and record the results as your healthcare professional directs.
- Bring the monitor to an appointment so the clinician can check its use and compare its readings.
When choosing a device, check that it is validated, that its cuff range fits your arm, and—when relevant—that validation covers the intended user population, such as children or people who are pregnant. Ease of recording or sharing readings may also matter. The AHA links to a validated-device list at ValidateBP.org; no single model is established here as best. See the AHA’s full home-monitoring instructions.
