The Hyperledger Fabric Certified Practitioner (HFCP) is a Linux Foundation certification for people who need to understand both Fabric network operations and application development. Its online, proctored, multiple-choice exam lasts 90 minutes and is based on Hyperledger Fabric v2.5. The blueprint is weighted most heavily toward Fabric networks, but also tests blockchain fundamentals, smart contracts, and client applications.
What the HFCP certification measures
HFCP is intended to demonstrate understanding of blockchain fundamentals, the Hyperledger Fabric model and networks, and production-deployment design. Linux Foundation Training & Certification describes this goal in its official HFCP certification page. The Linux Foundation announced the credential on October 17, 2023, describing it as a combination of Fabric system administration and development for professionals who manage the lifecycle from pilot testing through production (announcement).

This makes HFCP a blended credential rather than a narrowly focused programming or operations exam. The closest fit is someone who needs to connect network behavior with chaincode and client applications.

The official audience includes IT professionals, full-stack engineers, DevOps engineers, and software developers. The launch announcement also names blockchain solution architects, engineers, and system administrators. It may suit candidates who work across Fabric deployment and application workflows; people seeking only a general blockchain credential should note that the exam is specifically based on Fabric v2.5.
#1 Best Overall
There are no prerequisites, and the certification page labels the experience level beginner. That describes the formal entry requirement, not a guarantee that every topic will feel introductory: the blueprint spans network design, chaincode, identity, and application interactions.
What is on the HFCP exam?
The official blueprint divides the exam into four domains. Percentages indicate each domain’s share of the exam.
Rank #2
| Domain | Exam weight | Topics |
|---|---|---|
| Fundamentals of Blockchain | 16% | Distributed ledgers, smart contracts, consensus, the Fabric model, and business benefits. |
| Hyperledger Fabric Networks | 36% | Network structure and transaction flow; ordering service and peers; world-state storage; network creation; membership service providers (MSPs); maintenance; channels; and production-network design and deployment. |
| Smart Contracts | 24% | Design and implementation; chaincode lifecycle; reading and modifying ledger state; ledger queries; private data and private data collections; and state-based endorsement policies. |
| Client Applications | 24% | Gateway model and peer gateway service; smart-contract invocation; chaincode and block eventing; and offline signing. |
Fabric Networks is the largest domain, so network structure, identity, ordering, peers, channels, and transaction flow deserve substantial study time. Smart Contracts and Client Applications together account for nearly half the blueprint, so treating HFCP as only a network-administration exam would leave important areas unprepared.

How to prepare for HFCP
Study the version named by the exam
Use Hyperledger Fabric v2.5 terminology and workflows as your anchor. The certification’s published exam description identifies that version, so avoid assuming that knowledge of a different Fabric release maps perfectly to every tested detail.
Rank #3
Trace one transaction end to end
Build a connected picture of what happens from a client request through identity and endorsement, peer and ordering behavior, validation, ledger update, and event delivery. This links several blueprint domains and helps explain how network decisions affect application behavior.
Cover each domain, not just the largest one
- Networks: Review peers, ordering, MSPs, channels, maintenance, and production-network design and deployment.
- Smart contracts: Study chaincode lifecycle, state reads and writes, queries, private data, and state-based endorsement.
- Client applications: Review gateway services, invocation, eventing, and offline signing.
- Fundamentals: Be able to explain distributed ledgers, consensus, smart contracts, the Fabric model, and business benefits.

Is HFCP worth pursuing?
HFCP is most relevant if your work or goals involve Hyperledger Fabric specifically and you want a credential spanning its network, smart-contract, and client-application concepts. Its published blueprint makes the expected breadth clear, while the absence of prerequisites keeps it formally accessible to newcomers. Whether it is worthwhile depends on whether Fabric v2.5 skills align with the role or projects you want; the credential is not a substitute for hands-on familiarity with the system’s workflows.
