There’s no source-backed confirmation that Google Assistant is experiencing a widespread outage today. The available Google Play status page covers selected Play developer products—not Assistant—so its status cannot confirm whether Assistant is up or down. If “Hey Google” is not responding, use the checks below for your device type.
First, identify what is failing
- No activation light or screen response: Check power, microphone mute, Hey Google, Voice Match where applicable, and background noise.
- The device activates but gives no answer or the wrong one: Repeat the request, speak more slowly, or rephrase it. That can indicate a recognition or understanding problem rather than a failure to hear the hotword.
- A shared device responds but omits personal information: Check Voice Match and the devices linked to your account. Google says Assistant does not provide personal results to a voice it does not recognize as yours.

Try these five fixes
1. Check the connection and restart
On an Android phone or tablet, confirm that the internet connection is strong; restart the device if you are having connection problems. On a Google speaker, display, or Smart Clock, check that it is powered on and online, then unplug and reconnect its power cable. Open the Google app listing in the Play Store. If Update appears, tap it. If the listing says Installed, Google says the latest version is installed. This check is for Android phones and tablets, not speaker hardware.

3. Turn on Hey Google and configure Voice Match
On supported devices, open Assistant settings, select Voice Match, turn on Hey Google, and complete Voice Match setup if prompted. Menu labels and availability can differ by device. A Google Workspace for Education administrator may disable settings needed for this feature.
4. Check language, battery, and microphone settings
Confirm that Assistant is set to a language you use. On Android, Google recommends testing with Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery turned off. On a speaker or display, check the physical microphone switch or mute button. Google notes that Assistant will not respond when its microphone is off or muted.

5. Check recognition, then retrain Voice Match if needed
Say “Hey Google” and look for the device’s activation indicator. If it responds to the hotword but misunderstands the request, repeat it, speak more slowly, or try different wording. In a noisy place, move somewhere quieter and speak naturally. If the device is not recognizing your voice, Google’s Voice Match instructions include a Teach your Assistant your voice again option on supported devices.

Know where to send feedback if the checks fail
For a speaker or display, Google recommends submitting feedback through the Google Home app. For Pixel and Nexus devices, Google points to Tips and support; on other Android devices, use Send feedback in the Google app. See the speaker and display guide or Android guide for the applicable route.
