Keeping these three roles separate prevents a common misreading: “running on your phone” describes where the workspace and its tools live, not where the language model runs.

Tool roles: jadx output versus apktool output
The two decompilation paths answer different questions, and choosing between them is the most practical decision you will make in a session.
decompile_apk (jadx)
The decompile_apk tool description says jadx converts an APK into readable, Java-like source for reading and searching. Output is written under the workspace’s jadx output directory. decode_apk (apktool)
The decode_apk tool description says apktool decodes resources into editable XML and disassembles code into smali, producing a rebuildable project. It requires apktool on PATH (HexForge decode_apk tool description). Use it when you need to modify resources or code and repackage the app, and remember that rebuilding is a separate step you control.

Where your data goes
Local files are the default storage backend, and Supabase is optional (HexForge Gateway official repository). API-key authentication is opt-in and off by default. That combination makes a fully local deployment possible, but it is a configuration you choose, not a guarantee. Before you analyze a sensitive APK, read the storage and authentication settings in .env, decide whether the Gateway should accept connections beyond the local machine, and confirm which AI provider will receive any content sent to the model.

The project author states: “Only analyze apps you own or have permission to test.” (project author overview on DEV Community) That boundary applies whether you run the Gateway on a phone or a PC, and it applies to every tool the workflow calls.
