Short answer: for a single relay feed sent continuously to YouTube, compare the exact server product, region, included outbound traffic and sustained public bandwidth—not just a provider’s headline “unlimited” claim. Hetzner lists 20 TB/month for EU CX, CPX and CAX Cloud Servers, while OVHcloud Public Cloud includes outbound traffic in most locations but has a 1 TB/month project quota in Singapore, Sydney and Mumbai. OVHcloud VPS is a separate product with different terms. These allowances help estimate capacity and cost; they do not guarantee an uninterrupted livestream.
Start by identifying what the server will do
Relay an already encoded stream
In a relay setup, the server receives an encoded video feed and forwards it to YouTube. The main bandwidth questions are the feed’s bitrate, the time it stays online, the server’s public network capacity and the provider’s outbound-traffic terms. For a single upstream feed, do not multiply the server’s outbound traffic by YouTube’s viewer count: YouTube transcodes ingested live streams into viewer formats, so the relay sends to YouTube rather than separately to each viewer. That assumption stops applying if your server also serves viewers directly. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Encode or transcode on the server
If the instance must encode video as well as relay it, network allowance is only part of the decision. You must also establish that the selected instance has enough sustained CPU or GPU capacity for your codec, resolution and frame rate. The provider information here does not benchmark either service for live encoding, so validate that workload on the exact instance before relying on it.

Estimate the outbound traffic for a 24/7 stream
Use this calculation as a starting point:
Traffic in decimal bytes = bitrate in bits/second × seconds online ÷ 8
At a constant 6 Mbps for 30 days, the calculation is 6,000,000 × 2,592,000 ÷ 8, or about 1.944 decimal TB before protocol overhead. This is an illustrative estimate, not a forecast of billed use: reconnects, protocol overhead, other workloads and the actual time online can change consumption.

YouTube lists 6 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 720p at 30 or 60 fps with AV1/H.265, and 8 Mbps for H.264 at those frame rates. Those are YouTube encoder recommendations, not provider bandwidth guarantees. Choose settings based on codec, resolution, frame rate, content and a reliable path to ingest. For other configurations, consult YouTube’s current encoder settings rather than extrapolating a single bitrate.

- Pick the product family first. Compare Hetzner Cloud with OVHcloud Public Cloud only if both match your workload; treat OVHcloud VPS as its own alternative with its own regional and plan conditions.
- Check the actual region and allowance. An EU allowance cannot be assumed for a US or Singapore instance, and OVHcloud’s Public Cloud exception applies to projects in Singapore, Sydney and Mumbai.
- Calculate monthly transfer. Use the configured bitrate and expected hours online, then leave headroom for overhead, restarts, updates and any other outbound traffic.
- Check sustained public bandwidth. An included traffic quota is a volume allowance, not a promise that a server can sustain the bitrate continuously. Verify the plan’s network limits and test the route from the selected region to YouTube ingest.
- Test encoding separately if needed. For a relay, validate the end-to-end feed. For a server that encodes, test CPU/GPU headroom under representative motion and audio; no provider comparison here establishes which is faster for encoding.
- Plan recovery and monitoring. Set up an external monitor, automatic process restart or reconnect behavior, and a way to recover if the instance, connection or ingest session fails.
Configure and test the YouTube ingest
These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not features or guarantees provided by either host. Exact control names depend on the encoder you use.

- Use RTMPS for secure ingest where your encoder supports it.
- Set constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose a supported live codec—H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1—and match bitrate, resolution and frame rate to the stream you can reliably deliver.
- Keep the YouTube stream key private. Add it only to your encoder or relay configuration, and rotate it if it is exposed.
- Run a speed test from the server’s actual network path. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.”
- Test with representative audio and motion before scheduling a continuous broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health after going live.
Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream failures
- Stream drops or fails to reconnect: check whether the encoder or relay process exited, whether YouTube ended the ingest session, and whether the configured reconnect behavior is active. Use an external monitor so a failure is visible even if the server itself is unreachable.
- Buffering, dropped frames or unstable health: test sustained upload from the chosen instance and reduce bitrate or output quality if the path cannot reliably carry the configured rate. A monthly traffic allowance does not establish real-time throughput.
- Unexpected traffic charges or quota exhaustion: compare actual outbound usage with the provider’s product, region and billing period. For Hetzner, remember its stated allowance is outgoing traffic per calendar month; for OVHcloud Public Cloud’s Singapore, Sydney and Mumbai quota, account for the project/datacentre scope and lack of a near-limit alert.
- Video will not start after changing settings: confirm codec support, keyframe interval, bitrate and stream key in the encoder configuration; then review YouTube’s stream health and encoder guidance.
- Encoding overload: if the server encodes or transcodes, inspect CPU/GPU utilization during a representative test. Move to an instance that can sustain the workload or encode elsewhere; the bandwidth comparison alone cannot diagnose compute limits.
- Copyright or monetization problems: having the technical ability to loop a video does not grant rights to its audio or footage, nor does it guarantee YouTube monetization. Use material you own or are licensed to use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content policies before making a stream continuous.
Which one should you choose?
There is no evidence here from a controlled Hetzner-versus-OVHcloud test of 24/7 YouTube relay uptime or stream quality, so a measured performance winner cannot be named. On the published traffic terms, Hetzner’s EU CX/CPX/CAX allowance is clearly stated at 20 TB/month; OVHcloud Public Cloud’s outbound traffic is included in most locations but has a defined 1 TB/month quota in Singapore, Sydney and Mumbai. OVHcloud VPS may suit a different comparison, but its bandwidth and Asia-Pacific quota conditions must be checked at the plan and region level. Decide by the exact location, family, sustained network capacity, total cost and your own end-to-end test.
