AWS Lightsail is the easier-documented starting point if you want an instance in Mumbai and bundled compute and transfer. Hetzner Cloud offers a documented Singapore location, but the available location information does not list India and does not establish a matching current Singapore price or traffic allowance. Neither region name proves a more reliable route to YouTube. Test the actual stream from your intended Indian network and compare the billable traffic rules before committing.
Which service should you test first?
For a straightforward Mumbai deployment with a published bundled plan and transfer terms, start by evaluating Lightsail. Its Mumbai region is documented, but Mumbai plans have half the data allowance displayed for standard bundles, so the headline allowance is not the allowance to budget against.

Hetzner is a reasonable candidate if a Singapore location suits your route, but get the current price and traffic terms for the exact server you plan to use. The available Hetzner location documentation names Singapore, Europe and US locations and does not list India; it does not establish a like-for-like current price or transfer allowance for Singapore.
This is a shortlist, not a stability verdict. No matched test from Indian networks establishes which service has lower latency, better YouTube ingest routing, fewer dropped frames or better uptime. Those depend on the selected region and the path from the ISP and server to YouTube.

How do their regions, prices and transfer terms compare?
| Factor | Hetzner Cloud | AWS Lightsail | What it means for your decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regional option | Singapore is a documented location; the available locations page does not list India. Hetzner locations | Mumbai is a documented region. Lightsail pricing | Both are candidates to test, not proof of an optimal route or lower latency to YouTube ingest. |
| Price model | The cited location documentation says servers continue to be billed when powered off. A comparable current Singapore server price is not established here. Hetzner locations | Monthly bundles include compute, storage and a transfer allowance. The pricing page accessed in 2026 showed Linux/Unix public IPv4 entry pricing at $5 USD/month for 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB listed transfer before the Mumbai reduction. It also showed $24 USD/month for 4 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 80 GB SSD and 4 TB listed transfer before the reduction. Lightsail pricing | These Lightsail figures are plan examples accessed in 2026, not a complete matched-cost comparison. Check live prices and plan suitability before purchase. |
| Transfer allowance and excess | The exact included traffic and overage for a selected Singapore plan are not established here. | Mumbai plans include half the standard displayed allowance. Both inbound and outbound data count toward the plan allowance; only outbound excess is billed. AWS documents an India rate of $0.13 USD/GB for instance outbound traffic above the allowance. Lightsail pricing Lightsail data transfer quotas and overages | Use the Mumbai allowance, not the standard displayed bundle allowance, in your estimate. Confirm current terms for the exact plan. |
| Streaming capacity and reliability | A selected VPS must sustain your encoder or relay workload and its upload path; no comparative performance result is established here. | The same workload and route requirements apply. Mumbai placement does not guarantee an unbroken feed. | Measure performance with the encoder and stream configuration you will actually use. |
Estimate transfer from your stream bitrate
For a constant bitrate estimate, multiply the combined video-and-audio bitrate by the total number of seconds streamed, then convert bits to bytes. The calculation estimates data sent by the encoder; it is not itself a provider bill, because each provider applies its own counting and allowance rules.
- At 10 Mbps for video alone, 24 hours is approximately 108 GB using decimal units.
- Thirty uninterrupted days at that rate is roughly 3.24 TB, before protocol overhead and any additional traffic.
The 10 Mbps reference is YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps, not a requirement for every stream. Audio adds to total bitrate. Lightsail counts inbound and outbound traffic against its allowance, then charges only excess outbound traffic; apply that rule and the Mumbai allowance reduction when estimating its cost. The current exact allowance and overage terms for a chosen Hetzner plan must be checked with Hetzner before comparison.

Do not multiply the VPS upload by the number of YouTube viewers. The server sends the stream to YouTube for ingest; YouTube distributes it to viewers. Estimate the server’s stream upload from bitrate and operating hours, then account for provider metering and other server traffic.

A VPS has to do more than exist in a nearby region: it must encode or relay continuously and maintain its upload path to YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and sets a maximum of 4 seconds. For H.264 at 1080p/30 fps, its recommended bitrate is 10 Mbps. Check YouTube’s current guidance for the codec, resolution and frame rate you intend to use.

- Choose the workload. Decide whether the VPS will encode video in software or relay an already encoded stream. Software encoding consumes CPU continuously; leave headroom rather than choosing a plan solely by its advertised transfer allowance.
- Set and verify the output. Match the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings to YouTube’s current requirements. Confirm the resulting bitrate includes audio when estimating transfer.
- Use YouTube’s ingest details. Create or select the intended YouTube live stream, use the server URL and stream key shown by YouTube, and select RTMPS where supported. Treat the stream key as a password: do not place it in public scripts, logs or screenshots, and rotate it if exposed.
- Check stream health. Watch YouTube Live Control Room for ingest status, dropped frames and warnings during a sustained run. A server’s reported upload speed alone does not establish that its path to YouTube ingest is stable.
- Plan recovery and monitoring. Test what happens when the process or connection drops. Configure appropriate restart automation and monitoring for your setup, then verify that a restart reconnects to YouTube rather than leaving the stream offline.
Run a sustained test before relying on either VPS
Test from the Indian ISP and the chosen cloud region you actually plan to use. Run the intended encoder settings for long enough to expose recurring network or process failures; a brief speed test is not a substitute for an on-air trial.
- Track YouTube ingest disconnects, dropped frames and health warnings.
- Record reconnect time and whether the encoder or relay recovers without manual intervention.
- Watch CPU and memory during encoding, plus network throughput and process restarts.
- Repeat under the conditions that matter to your channel, and compare the same configuration across candidate regions where practical.
- Check the provider’s current plan price, transfer allowance, excess charges and billing behavior for powered-off instances before selecting a long-running plan.
Choose based on the test and total operating cost
Lightsail is the more straightforward documented starting point when Mumbai placement and bundled billing matter, provided its reduced Mumbai allowance fits your measured traffic. Its documented India excess-outbound rate can make overage material for a continuous high-bitrate stream. Hetzner Singapore remains a candidate, but compare it only after confirming the exact server’s current price and traffic terms. In either case, choose the service that sustains the required workload and produces acceptable YouTube ingest health in your own test; regional proximity alone cannot settle that choice.

If you would rather not maintain your own VPS encoder or relay, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not live camera feeds. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
