Think of it as three things: a read-only notification surface, a widget dashboard, and a shortcut launcher.
Prerequisites and quick setup
Before you start customizing, confirm your software and cover display settings so everything you see matches what you’re reading in this guide.
1) Update One UI so the cover features match
On your Flip 5, go to Settings > Software update. Install updates for One UI (and Android security patches) so cover display behavior and available controls are current.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2) Turn on Cover screen features
Open Settings > Advanced features > Cover screen. Here you’ll find core toggles (like notifications and cover screen interactions). Names can vary slightly between One UI versions, but the section is the right place to start.
3) Confirm your cover display notifications level
Go to Settings > Notifications and check notification categories and per-app settings for what should appear on the cover display.
How to control the cover screen (hardware basics)
The cover display uses both software and physical inputs. Knowing the “rules” helps you avoid frustration when gestures don’t register.
What typically works
- Tap the cover screen to wake it (if enabled) and interact with cards.
- Swipe to move between screens or cards when widgets/cards are active.
- Use the side key for general wake/sleep behavior depending on your settings.
- Use cover gestures (if enabled) for quick actions like launching the camera.
Because Samsung can adjust exact gesture mappings across software updates, rely on the in-phone settings menus under Cover screen or Advanced features if a gesture doesn’t do anything.

Set per-app notification behavior
Do this for apps that you care about most (messages, calendar, email, delivery apps).
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Select an app (example: Messages or Gmail).
- Adjust notification categories (calls, messages, reminders, etc.).
- Turn on the specific types you want visible on the cover display.
Choose notification visibility vs. privacy
If you prefer not to show message content on the cover display, use privacy controls in the notification settings. Look for options that hide notification details or show sensitive content only after unlocking.
Manage notification interruptions
For fewer cover interruptions, use Do Not Disturb or notification scheduling. On Samsung devices, these settings often apply across the system, including the cover view.
When notifications don’t show
- Make sure the app notification toggle is enabled for the category you expect.
- Check lock-screen and privacy settings so the cover screen isn’t blocked from showing content.
- Confirm the cover display notifications toggle is enabled in Settings > Advanced features > Cover screen.
Widgets and apps you can pin to the cover screen
Widgets are where the cover display becomes genuinely useful: you get at-a-glance info without opening your Flip 5.
Pin or change widgets
The typical workflow is to open the cover screen widget edit mode, then select and rearrange widget slots.
- Close your phone to see the cover display.
- Tap or swipe on the cover screen until you reach the widget area.
- Look for an Edit or Customize option in the cover interface.
- Add the widgets you want, then reorder them.
Common widget types you can expect
- Weather (forecast snapshot and conditions).
- Calendar (today’s events).
- Samsung Health (steps/fitness snapshots depending on your setup).
- Music (now playing controls).
- Reminders/To-do (if supported in your build).
Availability can vary by region and One UI version. If a widget won’t appear in the selection list, it usually means the app doesn’t support cover widgets in your current software.
Quick actions you can trigger without opening the phone
Quick actions are short-launch shortcuts designed for the “closed” use case—fast toggles and direct launches.
Examples of quick actions
- Launch the camera instantly for a grab shot.
- Toggle flashlight or start another utility (if your build supports it).
- Open a shortcut for frequently used tools.
- Control music playback without opening the phone.
To see what’s available on your specific device, open Settings > Advanced features > Cover screen and check the listed quick action options.

Music, audio, and media controls
One of the best “closed phone” uses is controlling playback. The cover display is built for glance-and-go media control.
Control playback from the cover display
When you start playing audio (Spotify, YouTube Music, Samsung Music, podcasts), you can usually see a “now playing” card or media controls.
- Start playback on your Flip 5 (while open or closed—if your app supports it).
- Close the phone.
- Use cover screen controls for play/pause, next/previous, and volume (volume behavior depends on whether the cover UI includes volume controls in your version).
If media controls don’t appear
- Confirm the app is allowed to post notifications and media controls (check Settings > Notifications for the app).
- Make sure “Media output” is set to the correct device if you’re using headphones or Bluetooth.
- Try restarting the playback app once; some players refresh cover controls only after reconnecting audio.
Calls, messages, and replies on the cover display
The cover display can show incoming call info and message notification cards. Depending on your settings, you may be able to reply or at least view key details without opening the phone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Incoming calls
- You can typically see who’s calling (or the contact name) and choose actions like answer/decline.
- If your build supports it, you may also see quick call options like sending to voicemail or turning off ringer.
Messages: read and respond (when supported)
For SMS and certain messaging apps, the cover screen may offer quick reply options like canned responses or text shortcuts.
- When a message arrives, view the notification card on the cover display.
- If you see reply options, select one and send.
- If replies aren’t offered, open the phone to reply normally. (Some apps limit cover-screen interactivity.)
Turn on privacy or hide sensitive content
If you work in public or commute, configure lock screen and notification privacy so message previews don’t display on the cover screen.
Camera controls while the phone is closed
The cover display is designed for “shoot fast” scenarios. You can use it as a viewfinder for certain camera modes and frames.
Start the camera on a closed flip
In Settings > Advanced features > Cover screen, look for camera-related cover options (wording varies). If enabled, you should be able to launch the camera without fully opening the phone.
Use the cover display as a viewfinder
- Enable the camera-on-cover feature in cover screen settings (if not already enabled).
- Close the phone and trigger the camera launch.
- Frame your shot using the cover UI.
- Capture using the on-screen shutter control or the supported hardware input (depending on your camera UI configuration).
Gotchas with camera capture
- Some advanced modes (like complex Pro settings) may require opening the phone for full control.
- If the camera won’t start, check permissions for Camera and ensure no system restriction is blocking it.
- Brightness and reflections can make framing harder on the cover display—use good lighting.
Customizing what shows when you flip open or close
Cover behavior is customizable so it matches how you actually use the device—commuting, office work, workouts, and weekends.

Cover screen wake timing
In Settings > Advanced features > Cover screen, check settings that control when the cover display wakes (for example, lift/tap wake, notification wake, or always-on behavior depending on your build).
Use cover screen settings to reduce distraction
- Disable notification types you don’t need on the cover display.
- Use scheduling (Do Not Disturb) so your cover stays quiet during meetings.
- Reduce widget churn by keeping only a few high-signal widgets.
Using cover screen with Samsung apps and features
Samsung apps typically integrate the best with cover widgets and controls, especially when they’re designed for glanceable info.
Samsung Health snapshots
If you set up Samsung Health goals, your cover display may show progress widgets. Keep the widget enabled and confirm permissions for Health tracking on your phone.

For appointment-heavy days, pin your Calendar widget or reminders widget. The cover screen is most useful when you only need the next item—not the full app view.
Smart suggestions and system status
Some cover screens also show system status cards (like battery or device state). If you don’t see them, check system notification settings and cover screen toggles.
Third-party apps on the cover display (what to expect)
Third-party app support varies. Many apps can show notification cards, but only some support interactive cover experiences or cover widgets.
What usually works well
- Messaging notifications (readable previews and basic actions depending on app support).
- Media playback controls for supported music and video apps.
- Event and delivery notifications via standard Android notification channels.
What often doesn’t (or is limited)
- Deep interactive controls like full message threading or custom reply fields.
- Cover widgets for apps that don’t offer a cover widget provider.
If you want a specific app on the cover, test it by enabling its notifications and checking if the cover display shows a dedicated card.

Cover display activity is generally efficient, but heavy notification volume and frequent wake events can add up.

Reduce cover wakeups
- Reduce notification volume for non-essential apps.

- Use Do Not Disturb during work or sleep.
Keep your widgets lean
More widgets can mean more frequent updates. Prefer a smaller set of widgets that answer your daily questions (time, weather, next appointment, music).
Troubleshooting: cover display not working right
If your cover display isn’t behaving as expected, start with the simplest checks. Most issues trace back to settings, notification permissions, or software state.
Problem: cover display won’t wake
- Confirm you didn’t disable cover tap/wake in Settings > Advanced features > Cover screen.
- Restart the phone.
- Check if the cover screen is blocked by a case accessory that interferes with sensors.
Problem: notifications don’t appear
- Check per-app notification settings in Settings > Notifications.
- Verify lock-screen privacy settings allow notification content.
- Make sure the app isn’t restricted under battery optimization settings.
Problem: media controls are missing
- Ensure the media app posts notifications and supports media controls.
- Disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth (if using audio over Bluetooth) and restart playback.
- Update the app and confirm system notifications for that app are enabled.
Problem: camera won’t launch from the cover
- Re-check camera-related cover screen options in Settings > Advanced features > Cover screen.
- Check Camera permissions in Settings > Privacy & security.
- Restart the phone and try again.
Problem: widgets won’t update
- Confirm the app behind the widget has notification permission and any required background permissions.
- Disable and re-enable the widget, then force close the app and reopen.
- Make sure your system time is correct (some sync features depend on it).
Common mistakes to avoid
- Over-enabling notifications: if every app is allowed, the cover display becomes noise instead of a tool.
- Ignoring privacy settings: message previews can show content you didn’t intend to display on the cover.
- Expecting every app to be fully interactive: cover display support differs by app and Android notification implementation.
- Using too many widgets: keep it lean so the cover UI stays fast and readable.
FAQs
How many notifications can show on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover display?
It depends on the notification type and the cover UI layout in your One UI version. Typically, you’ll see a manageable set of notification cards you can swipe through or open, rather than an unlimited feed.
Can I fully replace my locked-screen experience with the cover display?
Not completely. The cover display is best for glancing at key info and triggering shortcuts, but full interactions still usually require opening the phone, especially for apps that don’t provide cover support.
Why does the cover display show icons but not message previews?
That usually points to notification privacy or lock-screen content settings. Check the privacy controls in notification settings and ensure the content visibility level matches what you want.
Does using the cover display reduce battery life?
Any always-wake activity costs power, but typical usage impact is modest. The biggest driver is how often the cover wakes (notification volume and wake triggers), not simply having the cover display enabled.
Will third-party music apps always show controls?
Most popular music apps support media notifications, but some apps or unusual playback scenarios may not render full cover controls. Verify by starting playback and checking for a cover media card.
Bottom Line
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 cover display is at its best when you treat it like a daily dashboard: pin a few high-signal widgets, allow only the notifications that matter, and use the camera and media shortcuts to avoid unnecessary phone openings.
Once you dial in settings under Settings > Advanced features > Cover screen and per-app notification rules, the cover display stops being a novelty and becomes a practical part of your workflow.
