Google has started rolling out a redesigned set of app icons for Google Photos and Google Maps, moving toward a cleaner, gradient-forward look. If you’ve noticed the updated visuals in your app list or on your home screen, this is the reason.
This guide covers what the redesign looks like, where it shows up first, and exactly how to make sure you’re seeing the new icons on Android and iPhone/iPad. It also includes a troubleshooting checklist for the common “why didn’t it change?” cases.

What changed in the Google Photos and Maps icons
The headline change is a gradient-based styling that replaces (or refines) older flat/solid color treatments. The updated icons are designed to look more dimensional, with smoother color transitions and clearer contrast against modern light/dark surfaces.
In practice, you’ll see differences in color treatment, edge clarity, and overall “depth” rather than a completely new concept for each app. Photos stays oriented around its recognizable photography motif, while Maps keeps its familiar map/route identity—now rendered with a gradient polish.

Why the gradient redesign matters
App icons aren’t just branding—they affect legibility, consistency, and how quickly people can spot an app at a glance.
- Better contrast on mixed backgrounds: Gradients can maintain visibility across themes and icon shapes.
- Stronger UI consistency: Modern Android and iOS launchers (and OS-level icon styles) increasingly expect multi-tone artwork.
- Faster recognition: The smoother color transitions and cleaner edges help icons stand out in app drawers and searches.
Where you’ll see the new icons
Icon updates don’t always appear everywhere at the same time. The rollout typically lands first in app listings and then propagates to home screen tiles and system surfaces.
- App drawer / app list: Usually updates first.
- Home screen shortcuts: May update after a re-sync or when you re-add the shortcut.
- Search results and system app switching: Often reflect the update as soon as the OS refreshes app metadata.
- Widgets: Widgets can remain unchanged even when the app icon updates.
Prerequisites before you try to get the update
Before troubleshooting, confirm the basics. Icon rollout timing depends on app packaging, OS icon caching, and staged releases.
- You’re on a supported OS version that fully supports updated launcher/icon metadata.
- Your Google Photos and Google Maps apps are updated to the latest version available for your device.
- You haven’t replaced the icon using a third-party launcher theme that pins older artwork.
How to update and verify the new icons on Android
On Android, the new icons usually arrive via a normal app update and then update on your home screen once the launcher refreshes cached icon assets.

- Open Google Play Store.
- Search for Google Photos and open its app page.
- Tap Update (or confirm it says Up to date).
- Repeat steps 2–3 for Google Maps.
- Return to your home screen and check the icon visually.
- If it didn’t change, go to your app drawer and look there—this is often where the update appears first.
Verification tip: open the app from the launcher and then revisit the home screen. Some launchers refresh icon assets only after the app is started once.
How to update and verify the new icons on iPhone and iPad
On iOS, the icon is tied to the app’s current bundle. When the app updates, iOS typically updates the icon automatically, but existing home screen shortcuts can take a moment to refresh.
- Open the App Store.
- Tap Profile (top-right) and check Available Updates.
- Update Google Photos if an update is available.
- Update Google Maps if an update is available.
- Check the home screen icon and also try the icon from Spotlight Search.
- If the icon still looks old, remove and re-add the app shortcut (steps in troubleshooting below).
If you don’t see the new icons: troubleshooting checklist
If the app is already updated and you still don’t see the gradient redesign, it’s usually one of three things: a staged rollout delay, icon caching in the launcher/UI, or a customized icon/theme layer still pointing at older artwork.

- Re-open the app’s listing page in the app store.
- Verify it says Up to date.
- On Android, also check if there’s an update pending for Google services that the apps depend on.
Force-refresh launcher/UI (Android)
Some launchers cache icon assets. A refresh can pull the newly shipped icon resources into the home screen.
- Restart the device.
- If you use a custom launcher, temporarily switch back to the system launcher (if your device allows it).
- Long-press the app icon and choose Remove (don’t delete the app).
- Open the app drawer, then re-add the icon to the home screen.
Re-add the app shortcut (iOS)
iOS generally updates icons automatically, but stale home screen shortcuts can keep older artwork.
- Long-press the app icon.
- Tap Remove App.
- Choose Remove from Home Screen (so you don’t delete the app).
- Find the app in the App Library and long-press it.
- Tap Add to Home Screen.
Clear cached icon/launcher state (Android)
If icon caching is the issue, clearing certain system/app caches can help. Use this sparingly—your goal is to refresh assets, not “reset” your setup.

- Find and open Google Photos and Google Maps one at a time.
- Tap Storage.

- Restart the phone and re-check the home screen.
Common mistakes that prevent the icon switch
- Assuming the home screen must update immediately: Many launchers refresh icons gradually or only after cache invalidation.
- Using an icon pack / launcher theme: Some themes override default app icons with their own set.
- Not checking the correct app: For example, “Google Maps Go” (if installed) won’t match the standard Google Maps icon update.
- Skipping OS updates: Older OS builds can lag in icon asset support.
Icon behavior details: home screen vs app drawer vs app switcher
You may see different icons in different places during the rollout window. That’s normal when the launcher/UI caches icon bitmaps separately for each surface.

| Surface | What usually updates first | What you can do if it’s stuck |
|---|---|---|
| App drawer / app list | Icon assets pulled directly from the updated app | Check this as your baseline |
| Home screen shortcut | Often slightly delayed | Remove shortcut and re-add it |
| App switcher | Refreshes when the OS updates app metadata | Restart the device |
| Widgets | May not change even when icons do | Re-check widget styles only after a widget update |
Alternatives if you want the new look immediately
If you’re impatient, there are a few safe workarounds that usually bring the correct icon asset back without waiting for the rollout to catch up.
- Re-add the app shortcut: Removes the cached home screen icon and rebinds it to the updated app bundle.
- Restart the device: Forces a full refresh of launcher/icon metadata.
- Verify with app store listing: If the icon shown in the store listing matches the new design, the app package is updated—even if your home screen is lagging.
FAQs about the new Google Photos and Maps gradient icons
Why do I still see the old icon after updating?
Home screen icons can be cached by the launcher (Android) or appear stale on an existing shortcut (iOS). Re-adding the shortcut and restarting usually fixes it.
Will the icon change in every place on my phone at the same time?
No. App drawer and system surfaces often update before home screen shortcuts, and widgets can lag behind entirely.

No. This is an icon/design change. If you notice app behavior changes, it’s likely unrelated and tied to a separate app update.

Can I force the icon update without waiting for the rollout?
You can’t “trigger” Google’s icon package rollout on demand, but you can refresh cached shortcuts by re-adding the icon and restarting your device. That pulls the latest app artwork if your device has already received it.
Do icon packs or launchers affect what I see?
Yes. Some icon packs override default app icons, which can hide the gradient redesign even when the app itself is updated.
Bottom Line
The new gradient redesign for Google Photos and Google Maps is a visual upgrade aimed at sharper contrast and modern consistency. If you’re not seeing it yet, update the apps, then refresh your launcher/home screen shortcut so you’re pulling the latest icon assets.
