Yes, conditionally: HelloSign, now called Dropbox Sign, can support HIPAA compliance for qualifying customers. Dropbox requires an annual Standard or Premium plan, a signed Business Associate Agreement (BAA), and meeting its minimum contract value. Dropbox does not publish that threshold in its eligibility guidance, so confirm it with Dropbox before sending protected health information (PHI).

When can you use Dropbox Sign with PHI?

Dropbox Sign’s eligibility guidance, updated August 12, 2026, lists three requirements: an annual Standard or Premium plan, a signed BAA, and meeting Dropbox’s minimum contract value. These conditions mean HIPAA support is not established for every plan or account. Dropbox’s eligibility guidance does not state the minimum amount.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Existing customer with an account manager: Ask your account manager to confirm eligibility, the current contract threshold, and how to enable HIPAA support.
  • Prospective customer or existing customer without an account manager: Contact Dropbox sales to confirm eligibility and enablement.

Get confirmation of the applicable contract terms and have the BAA in place before transferring PHI. Dropbox’s broader guidance says the BAA must be in place before PHI is transferred to Dropbox as a business associate. The Dropbox Sign Terms of Service, effective January 7, 2025, also prohibit storing, transmitting, or otherwise processing PHI through the service unless the customer and Dropbox separately enter into a HIPAA BAA.

What does “HIPAA compliant” mean here?

Dropbox says there is no official HIPAA/HITECH certification. Its product wording is narrower: Dropbox Sign “can support HIPAA compliance” with a signed BAA and subject to a minimum contract value. That is a contractual and service capability, not a certification or a guarantee that your organization is compliant.

Your organization remains responsible for its own HIPAA obligations, the way it configures and uses the service, and the complete workflow through which PHI is handled. A signed BAA is necessary for the described use, but it does not by itself establish that every part of your process meets your obligations. See Dropbox’s HIPAA/HITECH guidance.

What changes after HIPAA support is enabled?

Dropbox lists several workflow restrictions for Dropbox Sign accounts with HIPAA support enabled:

  • You cannot CC other people on signature requests.
  • You cannot receive signed PDF copies by email.
  • Editing document titles and messages is disabled by default. An administrator can re-enable title and message editing from the admin console.

Plan for these changes when deciding whether the service fits your signing workflow. Dropbox’s guidance does not describe every possible setting or workflow configuration, so confirm any specific operational need with Dropbox.

Are integrations covered by Dropbox’s BAA?

No. Dropbox’s HIPAA/HITECH guidance says linked third-party apps and integrations are not Dropbox services and are not covered by Dropbox’s terms, including its BAA. Evaluate each integration separately for your regulatory and contractual requirements; Dropbox Sign’s BAA should not be treated as coverage for an outside app.

What to confirm before sending PHI

  1. Ask Dropbox whether your account qualifies under the current annual Standard or Premium plan and minimum contract-value requirements.
  2. Confirm the BAA is executed with Dropbox before transferring PHI, and that it separately covers use of Dropbox Sign.
  3. Review the listed email, CC, and editing restrictions against your signing workflow.
  4. Identify any connected apps or integrations and assess their coverage separately.
