Hell Is Us Settings to Change for Smoother Combat and Clearer Exploration

A practical Hell Is Us settings baseline for camera response, visual comfort, combat difficulty, HUD visibility and target control—without promising a universal best setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a practical starting point in Hell Is Us, try turning Camera Follow off, setting Movement Lag and Rotation Lag to 0.5, reducing motion blur or camera shake if they obscure the action, and showing enemy tier indicators and damage numbers during fights. These are options to test, not a guaranteed best setup: Game8 recommends the camera values, while TechRadar reports the motion and combat adjustments. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what actually helps.

Settings can make combat easier to read and control, but they will not turn the game into a conventional map-led adventure. Hell Is Us is designed around observation and judgment, without a map, compass or quest markers. The goal is to make its encounters and environments clearer without removing the player-led exploration the game is built around.

A good starting setup

There is no sourced, platform-by-platform test establishing one universally smooth or clearest configuration for Hell Is Us. The baseline below combines specific suggestions from Game8 with options reported by TechRadar. Treat the listed values as a first experiment: your preferred camera response, amount of screen information and tolerance for visual effects may differ.

Setting Starting point Why try it
Camera Follow Off Game8 recommends disabling it for a less floaty, more directly controlled camera.
Movement Lag 0.5 Game8’s suggested value; test whether camera movement feels more responsive to you.
Rotation Lag 0.5 Game8’s suggested value; adjust if the camera still feels delayed or too immediate.
Motion Blur Reduce or disable if it smears the view or causes discomfort TechRadar reports that the effect can be adjusted.
Camera Shake Reduce or disable if it makes encounters harder to follow or feels uncomfortable TechRadar reports that the effect can be adjusted.
Enemy Tier Indicator and Enemy Damage Numbers Show them if you want more combat information Game8 recommends both; they are optional aids, not required settings.
HUD Visibility Choose the amount of information that suits your play Useful combat information can help readability; a less visible HUD can leave a cleaner exploration view.
Difficulty and enemy tuning Start at Lenient if combat is interrupting exploration; otherwise choose the pressure you want TechRadar reports preset and individual enemy adjustments.

The camera numbers are Game8’s advice, not values established by controlled testing across platforms. Try them in a familiar encounter, then change only one value if the result is not comfortable. If disabling Camera Follow makes it harder to keep the scene in view, switch it back on; a recommendation is useful only when it improves your own control.

How to make the camera feel less floaty

Camera response affects how quickly the view follows movement and turning. If the view appears to trail your character or takes longer than you expect to settle, camera follow and lag settings are reasonable first places to experiment. Game8 suggests Camera Follow off and both Movement Lag and Rotation Lag at 0.5, describing that combination as smoother and snappier. It is a starting point, not a promise that it will feel better for every player.

Test camera changes in a controlled way

  1. Find a familiar, low-pressure stretch or encounter where you can repeat the same basic movement and camera turns.
  2. Turn Camera Follow off, then check whether you can keep relevant action and surroundings in view without fighting the camera.
  3. Set Movement Lag to 0.5 and test movement turns. Then set Rotation Lag to 0.5 and test turning separately.
  4. Keep the changes that feel more predictable. If a setting makes tracking worse, restore its previous value before adjusting another one.

This sequence helps distinguish a camera preference from a change that genuinely improves your ability to follow what is happening. A slower or more assisted response is not automatically a flaw: some players may prefer the camera to follow their movement, while others want more direct control. The relevant question is whether you can track enemies and surroundings comfortably, not whether your values match a guide.

Reduce visual effects that obscure the action

TechRadar’s review reports that motion blur and camera shake can be reduced or disabled. If movement leaves the scene difficult to read, or camera movement makes you uncomfortable, lower the effects and see whether the image becomes easier to follow. You do not need to disable both at once. Reduce one, play briefly, and decide whether the change helps before altering the other.

These are comfort and visibility choices, not demonstrated performance fixes. The available information establishes that the effects are adjustable; it does not establish that changing them increases frame rate or improves performance on a particular PC or console. Keep an effect if you like its presentation and it does not interfere with your play. Reduce it if clarity or comfort matters more.

Adjust combat pressure without changing exploration

Combat difficulty and navigation are separate issues. TechRadar reports three presets—Lenient, Balanced and Merciless—and options to adjust enemy health, damage and aggression. If fights are repeatedly stopping your progress through the world, Lenient is a reasonable starting choice. If you want to retain a particular overall feel but change one source of pressure, try an individual enemy adjustment instead of moving straight to a different preset.

Choose the smallest change that addresses the problem

  • Fights last longer than you want: consider reducing enemy health, so encounters take less time.
  • Incoming hits make progress feel too punishing: consider reducing enemy damage.
  • Enemy pressure is difficult to manage: consider reducing aggression.
  • You want a broader difficulty change: choose Lenient, Balanced or Merciless according to the overall challenge you want.

These are decision cues, not claims about the precise effect size of each adjustment. The review establishes that those controls are available, but the cited information does not provide numerical values or a measured comparison of how much each setting changes an encounter. If the game lets you adjust these options individually, make one change and judge its effect before stacking several changes together.

Showing Enemy Tier Indicators and Enemy Damage Numbers is a separate way to add information rather than reduce challenge. Game8 recommends keeping both visible. They may help you interpret encounters, but whether they improve your experience depends on how much on-screen detail you want. A visible indicator does not replace attention to the world or make the combat settings mandatory.

Balance HUD information with an uncluttered view

HUD visibility is personal preference. More visible information can be useful when combat demands attention; less can preserve a cleaner view while you explore. Game8 treats HUD visibility as a matter of taste rather than a setting with one correct choice. Try the level of display that lets you read encounters without drawing your attention away from the environment more than you want.

Because the game relies on the player to notice clues and make judgments, do not assume that hiding interface elements will improve exploration—or that displaying more interface information will add conventional navigation. The official game description says there is no map, compass or quest-marker system. HUD changes affect presentation; they should not be described as turning on those navigation aids.

Use automated targeting only if it suits your control style

TechRadar reports an option to automate enemy lock-ons, while Game8 describes target switching as a preference. Treat automated targeting as a comfort and control choice. If manually selecting or switching targets interrupts your focus, try the automated option. If it takes control away at moments when you want to choose a target yourself, prefer the manual approach or the target-switching behavior you find more predictable.

There is no basis here for claiming that automation is more accurate, faster or universally better. Test it in an encounter where you can judge whether target selection feels helpful. Keep it only if it reduces friction without making your intended control less clear.

Make exploration clearer without adding navigation aids

Hell Is Us asks players to explore through observation, clues and their own judgment rather than following map markers. Its official description characterizes the game as a third-person action-adventure with a semi-open world, intense melee combat and no map, compass or quest markers. The player uses weapons including swords, spears and axes, and also has a drone. Those design choices make scene readability and attention useful; they do not mean a camera or HUD option can provide directions that the game intentionally withholds.

For a clearer view, begin with the changes that directly affect visual comfort: lower motion blur or camera shake if they interfere, and choose a HUD level that leaves important information legible without cluttering the scene. Then check that your camera response lets you examine surroundings comfortably. Avoid treating a difficulty change as an exploration aid: it changes combat pressure, not the game’s navigation design.

There is a thematic reason the game places weight on the player’s reading of events. Creative Director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête describes its central theme as “the perpetual cycle of violence fueled by human emotions and passions” in the official Steam description. That context is not a settings instruction, but it underscores why clarity should mean seeing and interpreting the world—not expecting the interface to supply a standard route.

What platform and graphics advice can—and cannot—be established

The official PlayStation page confirms a PS5 version and lists DualSense vibration support, 3D audio compatibility and PS5 Pro enhancement features. Steam identifies the PC version and lists minimum system requirements. Those pages establish platforms and supported features, not that a particular camera or graphics value will improve frame rate on every system. The available cited information does not provide reproducible, current platform-by-platform performance comparisons or a tested “best graphics” preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For that reason, avoid copying a supposed universal graphics setup based on this advice. In particular, the reported motion-blur and camera-shake adjustments address visual effects and comfort; they are not evidence of a performance mode or a frame-rate gain. The cited platform details also do not establish a console performance-mode choice, so do not assume one exists. On PC, Steam’s minimum requirements tell you what the store lists as minimum system requirements, not what settings will produce a particular frame rate on your hardware.

The official Steam listing gives a release date of 4 September 2025. That date identifies the listed release; it does not make older reviewer observations a controlled test of later patches or every platform. TechRadar says its review was first published in August 2025 and reports its reviewer’s experience, including adjustments to difficulty and graphics settings. It is useful evidence that the options exist, but not a benchmark across systems.

A short tuning routine

  1. Set your goal. Decide whether the main problem is a floaty camera, distracting visual effects, difficult fights, excess HUD information or target control.
  2. Change one relevant setting. Use Camera Follow, Movement Lag or Rotation Lag for camera feel; motion blur or shake for visual comfort; difficulty or enemy tuning for combat pressure; and HUD or targeting options for information and control preferences.
  3. Repeat a familiar situation. Use a similar movement or encounter before and after the change so your judgment is about the setting, not a different situation.
  4. Keep, refine or revert. Retain an improvement, change a single related value if needed, or restore the earlier setting if the new one feels worse.
  5. Stop when the specific problem is solved. More changes are not automatically better; retaining some of the game’s visual and informational restraint may suit your preferred exploration experience.

The most defensible baseline is therefore deliberately modest: test Game8’s camera suggestions, lower visual effects only when they hinder clarity or comfort, tune combat pressure to your tolerance, and set HUD and targeting according to how you want to play. None of those adjustments should be mistaken for a universal optimization or for conventional map-based navigation.
