The G85 pairs two Cortex-A75 cores with six Cortex-A55 cores and Mali-G52 MC2 graphics; the comparison source lists eight Cortex-A53 cores and PowerVR GE8320 graphics for the G36. Both are 4G chipsets. Benchmark scores favor the G85, but they are aggregated results from different phones rather than a controlled test of identical devices.
What is the difference between Helio G85 and Helio G36?
The clearest difference is the CPU core design and GPU. MediaTek’s official Helio G85 specifications list two Arm Cortex-A75 cores running up to 2 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores up to 1.8 GHz. The side-by-side comparison lists the G36 with four Cortex-A53 cores up to 2.2 GHz and four more up to 1.8 GHz. The G36 details below are comparison-source specifications: detailed specifications were not available from the official G36 page in the material consulted.

A higher maximum clock does not automatically mean a faster processor. Core architecture, how a phone manages its workload, and thermal limits all affect performance. In this comparison, the G85’s newer performance-core mix accompanies higher reported benchmark results.

Which chipset scores higher in benchmarks?
NanoReview’s side-by-side comparison reports higher G85 scores in AnTuTu 11, Geekbench 6, and PCMark 3.0. The figures are comparison-page aggregates, not results from matching phones tested under identical conditions.
| Benchmark | Helio G85 | Helio G36 | Sample information shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| AnTuTu 11 | 348,562 | 193,858 | 65 G85 tests; 9 G36 tests |
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 419 | 189 | The comparison lists CPU sample counts with the Geekbench results: 35 G85 tests and 3 G36 tests |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 1,461 | 781 | The comparison lists CPU sample counts with the Geekbench results: 35 G85 tests and 3 G36 tests |
| PCMark 3.0 | 8,539 | 4,695 | Results across 20 G85 phone models and 3 G36 phone models |
The sample counts differ substantially, especially for the G36, and the comparison page also shows individual user submissions that vary. The figures indicate the direction of the displayed comparison; they do not predict the exact score of a particular phone.

How to interpret the scores
- Compare results from the same benchmark version. AnTuTu 11 scores should not be mixed with AnTuTu 10 or 12 scores as though they were the same test.
- A chip’s benchmark score is not a phone-wide performance guarantee. Cooling, memory configuration, software, and device design can change real-world results.
- Game frame rates depend on the handset, game version, operating system, graphics settings, and thermal behavior. NanoReview’s G85 game examples use a Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 and warn that results may vary; they do not provide a comparable G36 FPS figure in that table.
Separately, MediaTek’s May 5, 2020 launch announcement reported up to 25 fps for the G85 in the Manhattan benchmark. That is the chip maker’s stated result, not an independent G85-versus-G36 test.

Which one should you choose?
Choose a phone with the Helio G85 if performance is the priority
The available comparison favors the G85 for aggregate CPU and GPU performance. Its Cortex-A75/Cortex-A55 configuration and Mali-G52 MC2 graphics provide a stronger specification profile than the G36 configuration listed by NanoReview. For gaming or heavier everyday tasks, that makes a G85 phone the more promising starting point, but the phone’s cooling and implementation still matter.

Consider a Helio G36 phone for the complete device, not its peak clock alone
The G36’s listed 2.2 GHz maximum CPU clock is higher than the G85’s 2 GHz Cortex-A75 maximum, but clock speed alone does not establish which chip is faster. If comparing actual phones, weigh their memory, software, display, battery, storage, condition, and price alongside the chipset.
Neither chipset is 5G: the cited specifications identify both as 4G options. If 5G connectivity matters, compare phones built around a 5G-capable chipset instead.
