Heat Transfer Compound: What It Does in Electronics and Heating

Heat transfer compound usually means thermal paste between an electronic component and a heat sink, but industrial heating uses the term for graphite-containing mastic.

In electronics, heat transfer compound is a thermally conductive interface material—often called thermal paste or heat sink compound—applied between a heat-generating component and a heat sink. It fills tiny surface imperfections to improve heat flow across the contact. In industrial heating, the same phrase can mean a graphite-containing mastic used with bolt-on heaters, so context matters.

What heat transfer compound means in electronics

For an electronic assembly, heat transfer compound is a thermal interface material (TIM). It sits between a component that produces heat and a heat sink or other heat-dissipating surface. The compound helps heat cross the interface; it does not replace the heat sink.

Even surfaces that appear flat have small imperfections. Air trapped in those gaps transfers heat poorly. Compound fills some of the gaps and creates a more effective thermal path from the component to the heat sink. MG Chemicals describes this role in its Application Guide: Heat Transfer Compound.

What the term means in industrial heating

In industrial heating, “heat transfer compound” may refer to a different material: a heat transfer mastic applied with bolt-on heating products. CSI Heat describes its mastic as containing graphite and one or more binders, with grades made for different applications. A bolt-on heating jacket or panel points to this industrial meaning; a semiconductor or computer cooling assembly usually points to electronic thermal paste.

How to choose an electronic compound

  • Check the operating range. The material must suit the temperatures expected in the actual assembly. Electrolube lists −50°C to +130°C for its HTC product; those limits apply to that product, not to every heat transfer compound.
  • Confirm material compatibility. Check the product’s technical data and the equipment requirements, including whether the assembly permits silicone. Electrolube describes HTC as non-silicone.
  • Consider the full application. The component and mating surfaces, application method, and equipment-specific requirements all matter. Conductivity figures alone do not establish that a compound is suitable.
  • Follow the device instructions and test the assembly. Application details can depend on the device. The onsemi application note AND9814/D gives a mounting sequence for a specific device context. Electrolube also recommends stringent testing before selecting material for an application.

Electrolube lists a thermal conductivity of 0.9 W/m·K for its HTC product. This is a manufacturer specification for that product, not a category-wide value or a controlled comparison with other compounds. Its product page provides its stated properties.

What heat transfer compound does not tell you

The term alone does not establish a product’s conductivity, temperature limits, compatibility, or suitability for a particular device. Those properties vary by formulation and intended use. Use the product’s technical data and the equipment maker’s instructions to make the decision; do not assume that one compound works for every heat sink or heating assembly.
