Headless WordPress keeps WordPress as the content-management system while a separate application delivers the public website. Editors continue using the WordPress dashboard for posts, pages, media, plugins and user roles; visitors receive pages rendered by a frontend built with JavaScript frameworks such as Next.js, Nuxt, Astro or React.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Hosting therefore means operating two connected systems: a PHP/MySQL WordPress backend and a separately deployed frontend, usually behind a CDN. The arrangement can support app-like interactions, multiple channels and a modern development stack, but it adds infrastructure, authentication, preview and SEO work. It is not automatically faster, and it is usually excessive for a conventional blog or brochure site.

What headless WordPress changes
In a conventional WordPress installation, PHP themes query the database and generate the HTML that browsers receive. In a headless installation, WordPress still stores and manages the content, but its theme is no longer responsible for the public pages. A separate frontend requests content through an API, builds the page and serves it to visitors.
The two parts of the architecture
- Backend: WordPress, its database, the administration dashboard, editorial workflows, plugins, media library and user permissions.
- Frontend: an independent application that controls layouts, routing, interactions, metadata and the HTML delivered to browsers.
- API connection: REST or GraphQL carries posts, pages, images, taxonomies and other exposed data from the backend to the frontend.
The public domain can point to the frontend while WordPress runs on a separate subdomain or private origin. Editors work in the dashboard; developers deploy the frontend independently. This separation lets one content model feed a website, mobile application or other channel, provided each channel is built to consume the API.

What you give up
Removing the PHP theme also removes much of the turnkey behavior that makes traditional WordPress simple. Theme-controlled templates, many plugins’ frontend features and instant visual preview do not automatically carry over. Those capabilities must be reproduced in the frontend or replaced with compatible integrations. A preview workflow requires configuration on both WordPress and the frontend rather than a single dashboard setting.
When a headless build is justified
Headless is most defensible when the benefits of separation outweigh its operational cost.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Good fits
- A site needs app-like interactions or a frontend framework already used by the product team.
- The same editorial content must power a website and additional channels.
- Frontend and content teams need independent release cycles.
- Static generation, incremental regeneration and a CDN can reduce origin work at the scale the project requires.
- The organization can operate two deployments and maintain custom preview, authentication and SEO integrations.
Cases where it is usually overkill
- A standard blog, documentation site or brochure site works well with a normal WordPress theme.
- The team depends heavily on visual customizers or plugins that render directly in PHP.
- There is no developer capacity for a separate JavaScript application.
- The expected traffic and interaction model do not justify a second hosting bill and additional failure points.
There is no universal adoption, performance or cost statistic that can settle this decision. Evaluate the actual content model, release process, traffic pattern and team skills instead of assuming that “headless” is inherently superior.
Choose the content API: REST or WPGraphQL
The API determines how the frontend obtains WordPress data. The two common choices have different setup and request patterns.
| Characteristic | WordPress REST API | WPGraphQL |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Built into WordPress core; no additional plugin is required. | Added by a free, open-source plugin. |
| Typical endpoint | /wp-json/wp/v2/posts or /wp-json/wp/v2/pages |
One GraphQL endpoint, commonly /graphql |
| How data is requested | The frontend calls resource endpoints and commonly makes additional requests for related records. | The frontend asks for the exact fields and relationships needed in one query. |
| Best starting point | Simple sites with few relationships and a small number of content types. | Complex sites with connected content, multiple field requirements or a frontend that already uses GraphQL. |
| Main trade-off | Less setup, but responses can contain author and media IDs that require extra requests. | Fewer round trips and precise payloads, but an extra plugin and more schema, caching and authentication work. |
Using the REST API
Core endpoints return JSON. For example, a frontend can request /wp-json/wp/v2/posts for posts or /wp-json/wp/v2/pages for pages, then follow the referenced author and media IDs as needed. That additional assembly is the principal drawback on pages with many relationships.
The /wp-json/ index lists available routes. If it returns a 404 response, enable pretty permalinks in WordPress and save the setting, or use the rest_route parameter as an alternative route format. Test the endpoint from the frontend host before debugging application code.

Using WPGraphQL
Install and activate the WPGraphQL plugin, then query the single GraphQL endpoint for only the fields required by a page. This can reduce round trips when a page combines an author, featured image, categories, custom fields and related posts.
The WordPress.org directory lists version 2.23.1 as requiring WordPress 6.0 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer, with more than 30,000 active installs at the time of that listing. Its compatibility information reports testing against PHP 7.4–8.3, WordPress 6.0–6.8 and MariaDB 10.x; treat those ranges as directory information that may lag current releases, and verify compatibility in your own staging environment. One directory reviewer reports major bugs, but that is an individual opinion rather than a measured failure rate.
A practical selection rule
Start with REST when the site has straightforward posts and pages and you want the fewest moving parts. Choose WPGraphQL when relationship-heavy queries, a strongly typed schema or precise field selection will materially simplify the frontend. Either API can work; changing later is possible but requires rewriting data-fetching code and tests.
How to host headless WordPress
Plan the backend and frontend as separate deployments with an explicit connection between them.
1. Define domains and environments
Choose a public frontend domain, a WordPress administration/API domain and separate development, staging and production environments where possible. Keep the API origin reachable by the frontend build and preview process, but restrict administration access according to your security policy.
2. Provision the WordPress backend
Use ordinary PHP/MySQL WordPress hosting. Managed WordPress services can reduce patching and database administration; guides commonly name InstaWP for development, staging and production instances and managed providers such as Cloudways, Kinsta and WP Engine. The right choice depends on PHP version support, database capacity, backups, staging, object caching, API-rate tolerance and the host’s ability to handle your plugin set. A managed platform is particularly useful when API request volume is high or plugins are complex, but no fixed traffic threshold is established.

Install WordPress normally, configure HTTPS, create the required users and roles, and install only backend plugins that expose or manage content. A theme is optional for the public experience, but retaining a minimal fallback theme can make administration and emergency access easier.
3. Enable and test the API
- For REST, open a browser or HTTP client at
https://your-wordpress-domain.example/wp-json/. Confirm that the route index loads and that/wp-json/wp/v2/postsand/wp-json/wp/v2/pagesreturn JSON. - If the route index is 404, enable pretty permalinks under WordPress settings, save, and test again. If necessary, call the REST API with the
rest_routeparameter. - For WPGraphQL, install the plugin, activate it, and verify that the GraphQL endpoint responds to a basic query in staging.
- Create representative posts, pages, media, authors and taxonomy terms. Test drafts, scheduled content and unpublished records separately because public and authenticated responses may differ.
4. Build the frontend
Frameworks named for headless WordPress projects include Next.js, Nuxt, Astro and React. Implement routes for each public content type, map WordPress slugs to frontend paths and render media with responsive dimensions and alt text. Keep API calls in a small data-access layer so an eventual REST-to-GraphQL change does not affect every component.
Decide how pages are generated:
- Static generation: build HTML ahead of time. This minimizes runtime API requests but requires a rebuild when content changes.
- Incremental static regeneration: regenerate selected pages after publication or on a schedule. This balances cacheability with fresher content.
- Server rendering: fetch content per request when freshness or personalization requires it, accepting more origin work.
Headless architecture alone does not guarantee faster pages. Performance depends on generation strategy, query efficiency, image handling, cache headers, JavaScript size, CDN behavior and the WordPress origin.
5. Deploy the frontend separately
Frontend hosts named in current guides include Vercel, Netlify and Cloudflare Pages. Configure the build command, output settings and environment variables for the API origin. Put the frontend behind a CDN, configure the production domain and ensure preview builds can reach a staging WordPress API without exposing credentials in browser JavaScript.
6. Connect webhooks or rebuild triggers
When editors publish or update content, the frontend must know when cached pages are stale. Configure a publish-triggered rebuild or revalidation mechanism supported by your framework and host. Test edits to a post, featured image, taxonomy term and navigation item; each may use a different cache path.
Authentication and permissions
Public content can often be fetched anonymously, but previews, private posts and editorial tools require authentication. Keep privileged credentials on the server or in the build environment; never embed them in client-side bundles.

REST authentication
The REST handbook demonstrates Application Passwords with HTTP Basic authentication. Create a dedicated WordPress user with the least privileges needed, generate an application password and send it only over HTTPS from a trusted server-side process. Do not reuse a human administrator’s primary password or expose the credential in browser code.
WPGraphQL authentication
WPGraphQL documentation covers cookie-based authentication, WPGraphQL Headless Login and JWT-based approaches. Select one based on whether requests come from a server-rendered frontend, a browser session or a separate application. Validate token expiry, revocation, CORS rules and the permissions attached to the WordPress user.
Local development problems
Local setups commonly fail because permalinks are not enabled or because the API does not allow the frontend origin. Check the REST route first, then configure CORS deliberately for development origins. Avoid a wildcard origin when credentials or authenticated cookies are involved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preview, drafts and editorial workflow
Preview is a two-sided feature. WordPress must expose a secure preview request, and the frontend must accept that request, authenticate it, fetch draft content and render a temporary URL. Configure both sides before promising editors a live preview button.

- Implement a server-side handler that validates a signed or authenticated request and identifies the requested post.
- Fetch the draft through REST or WPGraphQL using appropriate credentials.
- Render preview content without allowing search engines to index the temporary URL.
- Expire or revoke preview sessions and test logout, draft updates and deleted drafts.
Also test scheduled posts, revisions, password-protected content and role restrictions. A public API response must never reveal an unpublished record merely because its numeric ID is known.
SEO requirements in a decoupled build
SEO is not inherited automatically from WordPress. The frontend must output canonical URLs, titles, descriptions, heading structure, Open Graph data, XML sitemaps, robots directives, structured data and appropriate status codes. Preserve redirects when slugs change and return a real 404 for removed content.
Best Value
If an SEO plugin supplies metadata, expose that data through the chosen API and map it into the frontend’s document head. A September 2026 WPGraphQL guide specifically addresses headless SEO with Yoast and the Next.js App Router, replacing an earlier guide aimed at the Pages Router; use the current integration pattern for your framework rather than copying an obsolete routing example.
Prefer static generation or carefully cached server rendering for crawlable pages. Client-only rendering can delay the availability of meaningful HTML and complicate metadata delivery. Verify the generated source, not just what appears after JavaScript executes.
Cost, operations and failure modes
No single price applies to headless WordPress. You pay for the WordPress host, database and backups, the frontend host or build minutes, CDN and media delivery, monitoring, development time and ongoing maintenance. The available guidance does not establish a universal monthly cost, so compare quotes against storage, bandwidth, API volume, staging, support and backup retention rather than a headline plan price.
Typical failure points
- Frontend shows no content: verify the API origin, HTTPS certificate, environment variables and whether the build is calling the correct route.
- REST returns 404: save pretty-permalink settings or use the
rest_routeparameter. - Pages are incomplete: inspect related author and media IDs in REST responses, or add the missing fields and relationships to the GraphQL query.
- Preview shows published content: check that the preview request is authenticated and that caches are bypassed or varied for the preview session.
- Browser blocks requests: correct CORS configuration, including credential and allowed-origin settings.
- Updates do not appear: connect publication events to frontend revalidation and purge the relevant CDN paths.
- Site is slow despite static hosting: measure origin API latency, build duration, image sizes, JavaScript payloads and cache-hit rates; headless separation is not itself a performance fix.
- Plugin feature disappears: determine whether the plugin only modifies PHP theme output. Rebuild the behavior in the frontend or select an API-compatible alternative.
A deployment checklist
- Document the backend and frontend domains for development, staging and production.
- Record the chosen API, endpoint, schema and authentication method.
- Confirm HTTPS, backups, WordPress updates, PHP support and database capacity.
- Test posts, pages, media, authors, taxonomies, custom fields, drafts and scheduled content.
- Keep credentials server-side and restrict WordPress users to least privilege.
- Configure CORS only for required origins.
- Implement preview, redirects, 404 handling, metadata, sitemap and robots output.
- Set static-generation or revalidation rules and connect publish triggers.
- Monitor API errors, failed builds, cache misses and origin resource usage.
- Document a rollback path for both the frontend release and the WordPress backend.
Is headless WordPress worth it?
Choose it when independent frontend development, multi-channel delivery or app-like interaction is a concrete requirement and the team can maintain two systems. Use conventional WordPress when simplicity, built-in themes, plugin compatibility and effortless preview matter more than frontend separation. REST is the lower-friction API for simple models; WPGraphQL is attractive when one query must assemble many related fields.
The decision is architectural, not cosmetic. Budget for hosting two applications, rebuilding editorial conveniences, securing authenticated requests, implementing SEO and operating cache invalidation. If those obligations do not solve a real product problem, a traditional WordPress site is the more dependable choice.
