What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Headless browser as a service (BaaS) gives your code a remotely managed browser—usually Chromium, Firefox or WebKit—over a WebSocket or task API. The provider starts and isolates browser processes, handles patching and capacity, and returns pages, files or extracted data. You still own selectors, workflow logic, authentication, target-site limits and spending controls.
Choose the model that matches the work: connect existing Playwright or Puppeteer code to a WebSocket BaaS; use REST or GraphQL for isolated screenshots, PDFs and scraping; use persistent browser sessions for authenticated agents; or self-host when network isolation or residency outweighs operational effort.
What a headless browser service actually provides
A headless browser is a full browser engine running without a visible window. It executes JavaScript, stores cookies, follows redirects, renders CSS, downloads assets and can interact with complex interfaces. A BaaS vendor runs those processes in its cloud or in a private deployment and exposes either browser-control protocols or higher-level HTTP operations.
This is different from an HTTP client such as requests: an HTTP client receives server responses, while a browser service can run client-side JavaScript, wait for hydration, click controls, upload files and preserve a logged-in session.

What BaaS removes
- Provisioning and patching Chrome or other browser binaries.
- Building a browser-worker pool, queue and crash-restart logic.
- Managing remote display, sandboxing and basic session isolation.
- Scaling browser processes up and down for bursty jobs.
What BaaS does not remove
- Automation engineering: selectors, retries, waits and business rules remain your responsibility.
- Target-site constraints, terms of use, robots rules, login policies and rate limits.
- Credential handling, data protection and decisions about where sessions run.
- Usage costs, concurrency planning and debugging failed workflows.
The four BaaS models
| Model | How you call it | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| WebSocket browser control | Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium or another CDP client connects to a provider endpoint. | Existing tests and multi-step automation with branching logic. | Most control, but you operate the workflow code and must manage session limits. |
| REST or GraphQL task API | HTTP requests for a screenshot, PDF, HTML, extraction or scrape job. | Stateless, one-off operations where a full browser client is unnecessary. | Simple integration, fewer opportunities for custom interaction. |
| Agent-oriented browser API | API-created sessions with persistence and agent tooling. | AI agents that must log in, retain cookies and complete several steps. | More session and credential controls to configure and pay for. |
| Private or self-hosted | Vendor software in your VPC, on-premises or an air-gapped environment. | Strict residency, network isolation or compliance requirements. | You regain infrastructure operations, upgrades and capacity planning. |
WebSocket BaaS for existing code
Browserless describes BaaS as running Puppeteer or Playwright against managed browsers over WebSocket. This is usually the least disruptive migration: keep your test or automation code and replace the local launch call with a remote connection. Verify the provider’s supported protocol, browser channels, authentication method and maximum session duration.
Task APIs for isolated work
A REST endpoint is often better for a URL-to-screenshot, URL-to-PDF or HTML extraction job. You send parameters, receive a file or JSON response, and avoid shipping a browser client into every worker. This model is easier to retry and queue, but it is less suitable when the workflow must branch after inspecting the page.
Agent sessions
Browserbase positions an API-created browser session around agents and authenticated, multi-step flows. Browserless also documents BrowserQL, AI integrations, MCP and browser-agent workflows. For either product, confirm how cookies, storage state, secrets, session replay and session expiry are handled before allowing an agent to use production accounts.
Private deployment
Self-hosting is justified when traffic must stay in a particular jurisdiction, reach private network addresses, or satisfy an air-gapped requirement. It is not a zero-operations option: you own browser image updates, capacity, patch response, monitoring and incident recovery.
How to choose a provider
1. Match browser engines and protocols
Playwright officially supports Chromium, Firefox and WebKit and can target branded Chrome and Edge channels. Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for Chrome and Firefox over the Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi. Select a provider that exposes the engines your acceptance tests actually cover; a Chromium-only service cannot validate Firefox-specific behavior.
2. Start with the workload shape
- Existing Playwright or Puppeteer suite: choose WebSocket BaaS and keep your client library.
- Independent screenshots, PDFs or page extraction: compare REST endpoints first.
- Logged-in, multi-step agent: require durable sessions, explicit credential controls and a way to resume or inspect runs.
- Private-network or residency constraint: shortlist private or self-hosted deployment before comparing public-cloud prices.
3. Check concurrency and maximum duration
Ask how many sessions can run at once, what happens when the quota is full, whether excess work queues, and how long one session may remain open. Browserless currently lists maximum durations of 2 minutes on Free, 15 minutes on Prototyping, 30 minutes on Starter and 60 minutes on Scale; Enterprise and self-hosted limits are custom. These are plan facts accessed September 29, 2026, so verify them before purchase.

4. Separate ordinary automation from anti-bot requirements
A browser that renders JavaScript is not automatically accepted by every target. If a site uses sophisticated detection, compare stealth routes, fingerprint controls, proxies, CAPTCHA handling and unblock features as separate capabilities. Browserless advertises stealth, CAPTCHA solving, proxying and fingerprint evasion; verify legality, site terms and the exact plan before relying on them.
5. Verify geography and data handling
Check the regions where browsers and recordings run, where logs and artifacts are stored, and whether a private network or self-hosted option is available in your required jurisdiction. A provider’s global marketing page is not proof that every plan offers every region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Demand useful observability
For intermittent failures, you need more than an exception string. Look for session replay, console and network logs, screenshots, traces, downloadable artifacts and a way to reproduce a run with the same browser version. Browserless advertises debugger and session-replay features; confirm which tier includes each one.
7. Review isolation and compliance evidence
Ask how sessions are isolated from one another, how credentials are injected and removed, what encryption protects traffic and storage, and which compliance attestations apply to your exact region and deployment. Browserless claims isolated sessions, encrypted connections and SOC 2 on its product page; treat those as claims to verify during procurement, not as a substitute for your review.
8. Compare the real cost unit
Headline prices hide the variables that dominate browser workloads. Compare browser minutes or compute units, concurrent sessions, bandwidth, storage, proxy and CAPTCHA add-ons, artifact retention and support. Model a burst, a retry storm and a long authenticated session—not just the average successful run.
Playwright or Puppeteer in the cloud?
Choose Playwright when engine coverage matters
Playwright is the stronger default when Chromium, Firefox and WebKit behavior all matter or when you need one API for multiple browser channels. Its browser binaries are tied to Playwright versions, so upgrades can require downloading matching versions in your local or CI image. Confirm that the BaaS endpoint exposes the engine and version your tests expect.
Rank #3
Choose Puppeteer for focused Chrome automation
Puppeteer is a sensible choice for a JavaScript team with stable Puppeteer code, Chrome-oriented workflows or tooling built around the Chrome DevTools Protocol. Chrome for Developers lists screenshots, PDF generation, navigation, complex UI testing and performance analysis among its uses. Do not assume it is universally faster or more reliable; benchmark your own workflow.
The practical decision
Inventory your existing language, framework, target engines, provider protocol and CI image first. Migration effort is usually lower when the remote service speaks the same protocol as your current suite.
Browserless vs Browserbase
Both can run managed cloud browsers, but their emphasis differs. Browserless combines WebSocket BaaS, REST, GraphQL, BrowserQL, AI integrations and cloud, private, on-premises and air-gapped deployment. Browserbase centers on API-created Chromium sessions for agents and authenticated multi-step work, with Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium and Stagehand integrations.
| Decision axis | Browserless | Browserbase |
|---|---|---|
| Engines | Supports Playwright, Puppeteer and other CDP clients; exact engine matrix is plan-dependent. | Real Chromium browsers; supports Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium and Stagehand. |
| HTTP APIs | REST, GraphQL and BrowserQL are documented. | API creates browser sessions; verify which task-level endpoints your workflow needs. |
| Persistent sessions | Persistent sessions are advertised; confirm storage duration and tier. | Designed for login walls, cookies and multi-step authenticated flows. |
| Concurrency and duration | Maximum durations currently listed: 2 minutes Free, 15 Prototyping, 30 Starter, 60 Scale; Enterprise/self-hosted custom. | Concurrency and maximum duration: not stated in the supplied product details; obtain current limits. |
| Stealth, proxy and CAPTCHA | Stealth routes, CAPTCHA solving, proxies and fingerprint evasion are advertised; verify plan and legality. | Not stated in the supplied product details; ask about required features. |
| Regions and residency | Regional endpoints plus private and self-hosted deployment are documented. | Confirm endpoint regions and residency for your account. |
| Observability | Debugger and session replay are advertised; tier inclusion must be checked. | Confirm replay, logs and artifact retention for the selected plan. |
| Pricing display | Current unit pricing was not stated in the supplied details. | Pricing page accessed September 29, 2026 displays Free, $20, $99 and Custom tiers; included usage is not stated here and can change. |
| Migration effort | Low for existing Playwright/Puppeteer or CDP code; REST is simplest for stateless jobs. | Low for supported browser clients; agent-oriented session design may require workflow changes. |
Pick Browserless when you need several access styles, regional or private deployment, or a declarative/REST path alongside WebSocket control. Pick Browserbase when API-created Chromium sessions and agent authentication are the center of the product. Validate current limits, pricing and compliance terms directly before signing a contract.

- Install your client library. For Node.js, install Playwright or Puppeteer. For Python, install the Playwright package and its client dependencies.
- Create a provider endpoint and secret. Store the WebSocket endpoint and token in secret storage, not source control. The endpoint format and query parameters differ by provider.
- Connect using the provider’s protocol. Use Playwright’s native connection method when the endpoint speaks Playwright; use CDP connection for a CDP endpoint; use Puppeteer’s
browserWSEndpointfor a Puppeteer-compatible endpoint. - Make waits and cleanup explicit. Wait for a selector or network condition, close the page, and disconnect the browser in a
finallyblock. - Control parallelism. Bound workers to the provider’s concurrency quota and add exponential backoff for capacity responses.
Node.js with Puppeteer over WebSocket
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.connect({
browserWSEndpoint: process.env.BAAS_WS_ENDPOINT
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await page.close();
} finally {
await browser.disconnect();
}
})();
Node.js with Playwright over a Playwright endpoint
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.connect(process.env.BAAS_WS_ENDPOINT);
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
console.log(await page.title());
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
If your vendor exposes CDP rather than the Playwright protocol, use chromium.connectOverCDP() instead and follow that vendor’s authentication syntax.
Python with Playwright
import asyncio
import os
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright
async def main():
async with async_playwright() as pw:
browser = await pw.chromium.connect(os.environ['BAAS_WS_ENDPOINT'])
try:
page = await browser.new_page()
await page.goto('https://example.com', wait_until='networkidle')
await page.screenshot(path='page.png', full_page=True)
finally:
await browser.close()
asyncio.run(main())
For Firefox or WebKit, replace chromium only when the provider supports that engine and the corresponding Playwright connection protocol.

Reliability, performance and cost controls
Reduce cold-start and rendering time
- Reuse a session only when its credentials and state are safe to share; otherwise create isolated contexts.
- Wait for the selector or network condition that proves the page is ready instead of sleeping for a large fixed delay.
- Block analytics, advertising or media requests when they are not part of the test.
- Cache immutable pages and avoid downloading a full browser artifact when an API task endpoint suffices.
Design for failure
Set navigation and overall job timeouts separately. Retry transient capacity, DNS and upstream errors with jitter, but do not blindly retry authentication failures or deterministic selector errors. Record the provider request ID, browser version, URL, timing, console errors and a final screenshot or trace.
Keep spend predictable
Put a hard concurrency ceiling in your worker queue, cap session lifetime, and alert on minutes or compute units rather than waiting for an invoice. Include retries, proxy charges, CAPTCHA charges, bandwidth and retained artifacts in your estimate.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| WebSocket connection rejected | Wrong protocol, expired token, malformed endpoint or plan quota. | Copy the endpoint from the provider’s current integration page, test the token, and confirm whether it expects Playwright, CDP or Puppeteer. |
| Browser starts but navigation times out | Slow origin, blocked region, unresolved DNS or an overly short timeout. | Test the URL from the provider region, increase the navigation timeout within the plan limit, and capture network logs. |
| Selector never appears | Hydration is incomplete, the content is inside an iframe, or the selector changed. | Wait for a stable selector, switch into the correct frame, and save HTML or a trace from the failed run. |
| Login disappears between steps | New context per request, cookies not persisted, or a session expired. | Keep one authenticated session for the workflow, persist storage state only in an approved location, and check session lifetime. |
| Works locally but is blocked remotely | Target-site bot detection, IP reputation or geography. | Review site terms, compare an allowed region or proxy, and use a provider’s documented anti-bot feature only when authorized. |
| Jobs queue indefinitely | Concurrency exhausted or a plan duration limit reached. | Bound parallel jobs, inspect queue metrics, shorten sessions and request a higher limit only after measuring demand. |
| PDF or screenshot is blank | Capture happened before rendering, a consent layer covered content, or the page failed. | Wait for a content selector, handle consent, inspect the page verdict or logs, and distinguish a failed load from a valid blank page. |
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a headless browser the same as an HTTP scraping API?
No. An HTTP scraper reads responses, while a headless browser executes JavaScript and can interact with forms, files, frames and authenticated state. Some providers expose both models.
Can a BaaS provider run Selenium tests?
Only if that provider exposes a Selenium-compatible endpoint. Check protocol support explicitly; Playwright or Puppeteer support does not imply Selenium support.
Should credentials be stored in browser cookies?
Use the provider’s secret or credential-injection mechanism when available, limit session lifetime, and avoid writing reusable cookies or storage state to shared logs or artifacts.
How do I know whether a failed run is my code or the provider?
Reproduce with the same URL, browser version and session settings, then compare console, network, trace and provider request-ID data. A minimal one-page navigation test separates connection capacity from selector logic.
When is self-hosting financially sensible?
Usually when residency, private-network access or isolation requirements are non-negotiable. For ordinary public websites, price the engineering and on-call work of operating browsers before choosing it.
