What you see depends on the video, the display, its settings, and whether the Mac is on battery. Apple documents one specific battery-saving behavior: with “Optimise video streaming while on battery” enabled, streamed HDR video is played in SDR while the Mac is unplugged.
What changes between HDR and SDR?
Standard dynamic range (SDR) and high dynamic range (HDR) describe different ranges of brightness and color that a video can represent. HDR can preserve more detail in very bright highlights and dark areas, and can render a wider range of colors when the source and display support it.

That does not mean every part of an HDR picture becomes brighter. A bright highlight may stand out more against the rest of the scene, while other areas remain similar or dark. The source’s mastering, the scene itself, your Mac’s display and selected mode all affect the result. Comparing two different versions of a video—or watching with different display settings—may not reveal a simple, universal HDR advantage.
Is HDR better than SDR on a MacBook?
For compatible HDR video on a capable display, HDR can provide more highlight detail and a broader color range. SDR remains suitable for general viewing, and HDR is not a guarantee of a more pleasing image: some content is SDR, and not every display, app, or viewing condition will show the same difference.

- Samsung’s 27” Odyssey G5 QHD Gaming Monitor delivers brilliant visuals and unparalleled lightning-fast action.
- QHD resolution (2560x1440) boasts incredibly detailed, pin-sharp images.
- With a wide 178° viewing angle, the IPS panel consistently delivers precise, radiant hues.
- 200Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms response time (MPRT) enable fast reactions for ultra-smooth gaming, and AMD FreeSync Premium reduces choppiness, screen lag, and image tearing.
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.
Apple says HDR playback requires a compatible Mac, the latest version of macOS, and an HDR10-compatible display, TV, or projector. Apple says the built-in display and Pro Display XDR support Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG. To use a supported third-party display, enable High Dynamic Range in Displays settings. See Apple’s instructions for playing HDR video on Mac.
Why does HDR look brighter?
HDR can make bright details more intense relative to the rest of an image, but the brightness figures Apple lists refer to specific display modes and conditions. They are not interchangeable guarantees for every Mac or every scene.

| Apple display mode | Brightness description | Intended use |
|---|---|---|
| Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits) | Up to 1,600 nits peak on the MacBook Pro preset; peak is not the same as sustained full-screen brightness. | General home and office use on supported MacBook Pro models. |
| Apple Display (P3-500 nits) | Up to 500 nits; Apple describes this as typical of built-in Apple displays. | General home and office use. |
| HDR Video (P3-ST 2084) | Up to 1,000 nits full-screen sustained. | Controlled 4K/UHD video-production workflows aligned with ITU-R BT.2100 conditions. |
These are Apple’s descriptions of reference modes, not a direct HDR-versus-SDR measurement across all Mac models. Apple describes the XDR and Apple Display presets as general-use choices; HDR Video is for a controlled production workflow. The appropriate mode depends on the task and viewing conditions. Details are in Apple’s reference-mode guidance.
Does HDR use more battery on a Mac?
Apple documents a battery-saving option for video streaming, not a universal battery-life penalty for HDR. When “Optimise video streaming while on battery” is enabled, Apple says the Mac “saves energy by playing HDR video in standard dynamic range (SDR) while on battery power.” Apple does not give a runtime comparison or quantify the savings, and this behavior should not be generalized to every app or type of HDR use.

To check the setting, open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and look for “Optimise video streaming while on battery.” If you want streamed HDR while unplugged, connect the Mac to power or turn off that optimization. Menu labels or availability may vary by macOS version. See Apple’s HDR playback and battery guidance.
How do I turn HDR off on my Mac?
For a supported third-party external display, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, select the display, and turn off High Dynamic Range. This control applies to supported external displays; it is not a general HDR switch for the Mac’s built-in display. If streamed HDR changes to SDR only on battery, check the Battery optimization setting described above.

What to do if HDR brightness becomes limited
On MacBook Pro models with a Liquid Retina XDR display and on Pro Display XDR, Apple says brightness can be limited when the room is hot and bright content has been displayed for an extended period. To help the display cool:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Lower the room temperature if possible.
- Hide windows containing HDR content.
- Allow the display to cool for 5–10 minutes.
See Apple’s guidance on display brightness limits.

Using HDR on an external monitor
For HDR on a third-party monitor, TV, or projector, check that it supports HDR10 and enable High Dynamic Range for that display in macOS Displays settings. Compatibility alone does not ensure identical results across screens: the display’s capabilities and settings still shape the image. Apple’s HDR playback requirements cover supported external displays.
