If HDR video stutters in Chrome or Edge on Windows 11, first check whether you use multiple monitors with different refresh rates. Other reported HDR and graphics glitches do not point to one confirmed cause, so compare settings methodically rather than treating any toggle as a guaranteed fix.
Start by locating when the stutter happens
Before changing Windows or browser settings, compare the same video in a window and full screen, in Chrome and Edge, and on each display you use. Note whether the issue affects one service or several, and whether you see dropped frames, uneven motion, pauses, freezes, or corrupted colors. These comparisons can narrow down where the symptom occurs; they do not by themselves prove its cause.

This is the most directly documented first check for a multi-monitor setup; it is not a guarantee that every HDR stutter has this cause. - Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select each connected display and check its refresh rate. Depending on the Windows build and display, the rate is available under Advanced display.
- If the rates differ, temporarily set the displays to the same available refresh rate.
- Replay the same video under the conditions that previously stuttered. If there is no improvement, restore the original rates and continue troubleshooting.
Change HDR or graphics settings only as a temporary test
Chrome Help Community posts from August 2025, October 2025, January 2026, and April 2026 describe varied HDR or video glitches involving GPU acceleration, Windows HDR, and Chromium-based browsers. These are user reports, not verified engineering diagnoses, and they do not establish a universal fix. - Record the current HDR and browser graphics settings before changing anything.
- Change only one setting at a time, then replay the same video on the same display. If testing HDR, compare HDR on and off; if testing browser acceleration, compare its current state with the alternative state.
- Keep the change only if it clearly improves playback without unacceptable image-quality or performance effects. Otherwise, restore the original setting before trying another variable.
Community suggestions, including browser launch arguments, are not official Chrome or Edge instructions and may become obsolete. Avoid treating them as prescriptions; the available evidence does not justify registry edits or replacing hardware for this symptom alone.
Keep Windows video playback controls in the right scope
Windows provides video playback settings under Settings > Apps > Video playback. Microsoft explains that these settings apply to some Windows video apps, including UWP and Microsoft Store apps. Record the details if the problem continues
Useful information for a support request includes the Windows build, browser name and version, GPU and driver version, monitor model and connection, refresh rate, HDR state, video service, and the exact symptom. Also note which comparisons you tried and whether each changed playback. This record does not fix the issue, but it helps distinguish a browser-specific problem from one affecting other playback conditions.
