HDMI Type E is a locking connector made for automotive HDMI connections. It is designed to secure internal connections in a vehicle, where vibration and temperature extremes can challenge ordinary connections. Type E names a connector type—not an HDMI version or video-resolution level.
What HDMI Type E means
HDMI Licensing Administrator describes Type E as a locking connector intended to secure connections inside a vehicle. It is part of an automotive connection system, rather than a feature that determines picture quality or supported resolution. HDMI’s feature archive describes the connector’s purpose.

The automotive system pairs the locking connector with a dedicated cable for in-vehicle use. HDMI says this cable is designed and tested for conditions such as vibration and temperature extremes. HDMI’s cable guidance also notes that internal vehicle relays can affect signal strength, so Standard Automotive HDMI Cable is designed to provide a stronger signal than other cable types.
How Type E differs from a regular HDMI connection
Type E’s defining distinction is its automotive-oriented locking connection. HDMI’s guidance also distinguishes automotive cabling from ordinary consumer HDMI cabling by its intended in-vehicle conditions and signal requirements. A standard consumer HDMI cable should not be assumed to fit a Type E port.

Product listings may describe assemblies as Type E-A or Type E-E. These names identify different connector-end configurations, not guaranteed compatibility with a particular car. TE Connectivity documents both categories in its Type E assembly listings. Check the actual vehicle port, whether it is a plug or receptacle, both cable ends, and the connection direction before buying.
Choosing a Type E cable or assembly
If you need to connect a vehicle’s Type E port to consumer HDMI equipment, a useful search phrase is “automotive HDMI Type E to Type A cable.” Treat that phrase as a starting point, not proof that a listing will work with your vehicle.

- Confirm the cable’s purpose: For an in-vehicle installation, look for automotive cabling intended for the relevant environment rather than assuming an ordinary consumer cable is equivalent.
- Check direction and function: Confirm which end connects to the vehicle and which to the source or display. Do not infer direction or adapter compatibility from a short product title.
Type E is not HDMI 2.2
“Type E” identifies a connector category; “HDMI 2.2” is a specification version. The HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies HDMI 2.2 as the most recent specification update on its specification page. That version context does not change the automotive meaning of Type E.
What is—and is not—established about Type E
The public HDMI material establishes Type E’s automotive purpose and the system’s focus on securing connections and withstanding in-vehicle conditions. It does not, by itself, establish that a given cable fits a particular vehicle, or that every Type E installation has identical behavior. No Type E-specific shipment, market-share, or reliability statistic is established by the cited material.
