An HDMI connection can fail for simple reasons like a loose cable, the wrong TV input, or a Windows projection setting that changed unexpectedly. It can also point to driver problems, unsupported display settings, a damaged port, or issues with the graphics hardware inside the PC.
The best approach is to start with quick checks before moving into deeper troubleshooting. By testing the cable and display first, then reviewing Windows settings, graphics drivers, resolution options, and hardware signs, you can narrow down whether the problem is software-related or needs repair.
When an HDMI port fails, Outbyte Driver Updater can check graphics, display, and chipset drivers that support the connection.

Check the HDMI Cable, Port, and Display Input
Start with the simplest parts of the HDMI chain: the cable, the port on the PC, and the input selected on the monitor or TV. A loose connector, damaged cable, dusty port, or wrong input source can make it look like the PC’s HDMI port has failed when the problem is actually external. Before changing Windows settings or reinstalling drivers, confirm that the physical connection is sound.
Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends and inspect it closely. Look for bent connector pins, cracked plastic, frayed shielding, sharp kinks, or a connector that wiggles too much when plugged in. Reconnect it firmly to the HDMI port on the PC and to the HDMI port on the display. The plug should sit straight and feel secure, not partially inserted or under tension. If the cable is stretched tightly behind a desk or entertainment center, reposition the devices or try a longer cable.

- Try a different HDMI cable: Use a known-working cable, preferably one you have already tested with another device such as a game console, streaming box, or laptop.
- Avoid adapters during testing: If you are using HDMI-to-VGA, USB-C-to-HDMI, DisplayPort-to-HDMI, a dock, or an HDMI switch, connect directly to the display if possible.
- Check for port damage: Shine a light into the HDMI port and look for bent contacts, debris, corrosion, or a loose internal socket.
- Use the correct graphics output: On desktop PCs with a dedicated graphics card, plug the HDMI cable into the graphics card’s HDMI port, not the motherboard HDMI port, unless you specifically use integrated graphics.
Next, verify the monitor or TV is set to the correct input. Many displays have mulle HDMI ports labeled HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3, ARC, or eARC. Use the display’s remote or physical input button to select the exact HDMI port your PC is connected to. If the cable is plugged into HDMI 2 but the TV is set to HDMI 1, Windows may be working normally while the screen still shows “No Signal.” On some TVs, the input menu may hide inactive ports until a signal is detected, so cycle through all HDMI inputs and wait a few seconds on each one.
If the display has more than one HDMI port, move the cable to another HDMI input on the monitor or TV. This helps separate a bad display-side port from a PC-side issue. Likewise, if your PC has more than one video output, test another available HDMI port or another compatible output such as DisplayPort with a proper cable. For laptops, make sure the HDMI plug is fully seated; slim chassis designs can make it easier for a thick cable connector to stop short before making full contact.
Also check the display itself. Confirm the monitor or TV is powered on, brightness is not turned all the way down, and sleep or eco mode has not disabled the input. If available, connect another device to the same HDMI cable and display input. If that device also fails to show a picture, the cable, display input, or monitor/TV is more likely at fault than the PC. If another device works immediately, continue with Windows display detection and projection settings next.
Restart the PC and Reconnect the Display Correctly
If the HDMI cable, port, and display input look fine, the next fix is to reset the connection between the PC and the monitor or TV. Windows can sometimes fail to complete the HDMI handshake, especially after sleep mode, a driver crash, a loose cable event, or switching between displays. Restarting both devices and reconnecting them in the right order often forces Windows and the display to negotiate the signal again.
Start by shutting down the Windows PC completely instead of using sleep or hibernate. If you are using a desktop, turn off the monitor or TV as well. For a laptop, close any apps, shut it down, and disconnect the charger if practical. Unplug the HDMI cable from both the PC and the display, then wait about 30 seconds. This short pause helps clear temporary connection states on some monitors, TVs, docks, and graphics adapters.
- Turn off the PC and the external display. Use Shut down from the Windows power menu rather than Restart if the screen is not being detected properly.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable from both ends. Check that the connector is not angled, bent, or blocked by the PC case or monitor housing.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable firmly. Push it straight into the HDMI port on the PC and into the selected HDMI port on the monitor or TV.
- Turn on the monitor or TV first. Select the matching HDMI input, such as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or PC HDMI.
- Turn on the PC last. Let Windows boot while the external display is already powered on and waiting for a signal.
The order matters because some displays are more reliable when they are powered on before the PC starts. This is especially common with TVs used as monitors, older HDMI displays, USB-C docking stations with HDMI output, and systems with both integrated and dedicated graphics. If Windows detects the display during startup, it is more likely to apply the correct output mode automatically.
If you are using a laptop, try reconnecting the HDMI cable after Windows has fully loaded as well. Plug the cable in, wait a few seconds, and watch for a display flicker or Windows notification sound. If nothing appears, press Windows + P and choose Duplicate or Extend. Avoid choosing PC screen only, since that disables the external display output. On some laptops, you may also have a function key for display switching, such as Fn + F4, Fn + F5, Fn + F7, or a key with a monitor icon.
For desktops, make sure the HDMI cable is connected to the correct graphics output. If the PC has a dedicated graphics card, the HDMI cable should usually be plugged into the HDMI port on the graphics card, not the HDMI port on the motherboard. The motherboard HDMI port may be disabled when a dedicated GPU is installed, depending on BIOS settings and processor support. After reconnecting, give the system a minute to initialize the display before moving on to Windows display detection and projection settings.
Detect the Display and Adjust Windows Projection Settings
If the HDMI cable and input source are correct but the screen still stays blank, Windows may not be sending a signal to the external display. This can happen after a driver update, waking from sleep, switching between monitors, connecting a TV, or moving a laptop between docking setups. The display may be physically connected, but Windows might still be set to use only the built-in screen or another monitor.

Use the Windows projection shortcut
Press Windows + P to open the projection menu. This lets you choose how Windows uses connected displays. If you are troubleshooting a blank HDMI screen, wait a few seconds after each option because some monitors and TVs take time to resync.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- PC screen only: Uses only the main display. This can make the HDMI monitor appear not to work.
- Duplicate: Shows the same image on both screens. This is useful for testing whether the HDMI display can receive a signal.
- Extend: Treats the HDMI display as extra desktop space. The monitor may be working even if it appears empty because your windows are still on the other screen.
- Second screen only: Sends output only to the external display. On a laptop, this can make the built-in screen go black.
For a quick test, choose Duplicate. If the HDMI display turns on, the port and cable are likely working, and the issue was only the projection mode. If you prefer using the HDMI monitor as an extra workspace, switch to Extend afterward and drag windows between screens.
Force Windows to detect the HDMI display
You can also check the display from Windows Settings. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display. In Windows 10, go to Settings > System > Display. If the HDMI monitor does not appear in the display layout area, scroll down and select Detect next to the option for detecting another display.
If Windows finds the monitor, select it in the display diagram and check that it is enabled. On some systems, a detected display may be set to Disconnect this display. Change that option to Duplicate desktop or Extend desktop to this display. Also use the Identify button to confirm which numbered display is which, especially if you have more than one monitor, a TV, or a docking station connected.
Check multi-monitor placement
When using Extend, the HDMI display might be active but positioned virtually on the wrong side of your main screen. In the display layout, drag the numbered monitor boxes so they match the real arrangement on your desk. For example, if your HDMI monitor is physically to the right of your laptop, place its display box to the right. Click Apply, then move the mouse toward that side of the screen to test it.

Update or Reinstall Graphics Drivers
If Windows can detect that a monitor is connected but you still get no image, flickering, the wrong resolution, or “no signal” after the startup logo, the graphics driver may be the problem. HDMI output is handled by your GPU driver, whether your PC uses Intel integrated graphics, AMD Radeon, NVIDIA GeForce, or a combination of integrated and dedicated graphics. A damaged, outdated, or recently updated driver can stop the HDMI port from working correctly.
Start by updating the driver through Windows Device Manager. Right-click the Start button, select Device Manager, expand Display adapters, then right-click your graphics device and choose Update driver. Select Search automatically for drivers. If Windows finds an update, install it, restart the PC, and test the HDMI connection again. If you see more than one graphics adapter, such as Intel UHD Graphics and NVIDIA GeForce, update both.
For a more complete update, download the latest graphics driver directly from the manufacturer. This is often better than relying on Windows Update, especially for gaming PCs, workstations, and laptops with switchable graphics. Use the correct source for your hardware:

- Intel: Use Intel Driver & Support Assistant or your PC manufacturer’s support page.
- Laptops and all-in-one PCs: Check Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, or the relevant manufacturer first, because some models need customized display drivers.
If the HDMI issue started after a driver update, rolling back may fix it. In Device Manager, double-click the graphics adapter, open the Driver tab, and select Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Restart afterward and reconnect the HDMI display. This is useful when a new driver introduces a compatibility problem with a specific monitor, TV, docking station, AV receiver, or HDMI adapter.
If updating or rolling back does not help, reinstall the driver. In Device Manager, right-click the graphics adapter and choose Uninstall device. If you see an option to remove the driver software for this device, use it only if you already have the replacement driver downloaded or you are comfortable letting Windows reinstall a basic driver. Restart the PC, then install the latest driver from the GPU or PC manufacturer. After installation, restart again before testing HDMI.
Extra driver checks for HDMI audio and multi-GPU PCs
HDMI carries both video and audio, so also check audio-related display drivers if the screen works but HDMI sound does not. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers and look for entries such as NVIDIA High Definition Audio, AMD High Definition Audio Device, or Intel Display Audio. Updating the graphics package usually updates these components too. On desktops with both motherboard HDMI and graphics card HDMI, make sure the cable is connected to the active GPU output; a driver update will not help if the display is plugged into a disabled motherboard port.
Check Display Resolution and Refresh Rate Settings
If Windows is sending a resolution or refresh rate your monitor or TV cannot handle, the HDMI connection may appear broken even though the cable and port are fine. This often happens after connecting a different display, changing graphics drivers, using a TV as a second screen, or enabling a high refresh rate that the HDMI version, cable, or display input does not support.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallStart by opening Settings > System > Display. If you use more than one screen, select the display that is not working, then check Display resolution. Choose the option marked Recommended where available. For a 1080p monitor, this is usually 1920 × 1080; for many 4K TVs, it may be 3840 × 2160. If the screen goes black after applying a setting, wait without pressing anything; Windows normally reverts the change after a short countdown.
Next, check the refresh rate. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, then use Choose a refresh rate. In Windows 10, open Advanced display settings, then select Display adapter properties > Monitor. Try a common safe value such as 60 Hz. Some displays may not show an image at 120 Hz, 144 Hz, or higher over HDMI, especially if the monitor requires DisplayPort for its maximum refresh rate.
- For TVs: try 1920 × 1080 at 60 Hz first, even if the TV is 4K. Once the image appears, raise the resolution gradually.
- For 4K monitors: use 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz only if the HDMI cable, GPU, and monitor port support it. Older HDMI ports may be limited to 4K at 30 Hz.
- For high-refresh gaming monitors: test 60 Hz or 120 Hz before selecting 144 Hz, 165 Hz, or 240 Hz.
- For adapters or docks: lower the resolution and refresh rate because many USB-C hubs, splitters, and HDMI adapters have bandwidth limits.
If the external screen is black and you cannot see Windows settings, boot with only one display connected, or connect the PC to a known-working monitor. You can also start Windows in Safe Mode, which loads a basic display driver and lower display settings. From there, uninstall the current graphics driver or reset the display configuration, then restart normally and reconnect the HDMI display.
Also check GPU control panels such as NVIDIA Control Panel, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, or Intel Graphics Command Center. These tools can override Windows settings with custom resolutions, color formats, scaling modes, HDR, or high bit-depth output. If HDMI works at a lower setting, disable custom resolutions, turn off HDR temporarily, set the output color format to a standard option such as RGB or YCbCr 4:4:4, and keep the refresh rate at a stable value before testing higher settings again.
Test With Another Monitor, TV, or HDMI Port
If the cable, input source, Windows display settings, and graphics driver all look correct, the next step is to isolate which device in the chain is failing. An HDMI connection depends on the PC’s output port, the HDMI cable, and the display’s input port. Testing different combinations helps you narrow the problem instead of repeatedly changing settings that may already be fine.

Start by connecting the PC to a different monitor or TV using the same HDMI cable. If the second display works immediately, the original monitor or TV may have a faulty HDMI input, a disabled input mode, outdated firmware, or a setting that prevents the signal from appearing. Try another HDMI socket on that display if it has more than one, and make sure the source is set to the matching input, such as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or PC.
If the PC still produces no picture on another display, test the same monitor or TV with a different device, such as a game console, streaming box, laptop, or Blu-ray player. If that device displays correctly through the same HDMI input, the display is likely working and the issue is more likely on the PC side. If nothing works on that HDMI input, use a different input on the display or consider that the display’s HDMI board may be damaged.
Useful test combinations
- Same PC, different HDMI cable: Confirms whether the original cable is damaged or incompatible.
- Same PC, different monitor or TV: Checks whether the first display is the problem.
- Different device, same monitor input: Verifies whether the monitor or TV HDMI port can receive a signal.
- Same PC, different output port: Helps identify a bad HDMI port if your PC also has DisplayPort, USB-C display output, DVI, or another HDMI port.
Desktop PCs can be confusing because they may have HDMI ports in two places: one on the motherboard and another on a dedicated graphics card. If your PC has a separate graphics card, plug the HDMI cable into the card’s port, usually located lower on the back of the case where the horizontal expansion slots are. The motherboard HDMI port may not work when a dedicated GPU is installed, especially if the processor does not have integrated graphics or the onboard graphics are disabled.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If your monitor supports another input type, try DisplayPort, USB-C, DVI, or VGA with the correct cable or adapter. A working picture through another output suggests Windows and the graphics card are still functioning, while the HDMI port itself, the HDMI handshake, or a specific cable/display combination may be at fault. Be careful with adapters: a USB-C to HDMI adapter must support video output, and a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter must match the direction of the signal.
For laptops, test both direct HDMI and any dock, hub, or adapter you normally use. Remove the dock and connect straight to the TV or monitor if possible. Many “HDMI port not working” cases are actually caused by a failing USB-C hub, an underpowered docking station, or an adapter that does not support the display’s resolution and refresh rate. If direct HDMI works but the dock does not, update the dock firmware, try another adapter, or lower the display mode before reconnecting through the accessory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Inspect BIOS, Hardware, and When to Seek Repair
If the HDMI port still is not working after you have checked the cable, input source, Windows display settings, drivers, and refresh rate, the issue may be below Windows itself. At this stage, focus on firmware settings, physical damage, and component failure. This is especially relevant if the PC does not detect any HDMI display at all, the screen never shows a startup logo, or the HDMI output stopped working after a BIOS update, GPU change, power surge, or accidental impact.
Check BIOS or UEFI display settings
Some desktop PCs and workstations have both motherboard HDMI and a dedicated graphics card. If a graphics card is installed, many systems automatically disable the motherboard HDMI port unless integrated graphics is enabled in BIOS or UEFI. Restart the PC and enter BIOS using the key shown during startup, commonly Del, F2, F10, or Esc. Look for settings such as Primary Display, Initial Display Output, iGPU Multi-Monitor, Integrated Graphics, or PCIe Graphics.
- If your HDMI cable is plugged into the graphics card, set the primary display to PCIe or PEG.
- If your HDMI cable is plugged into the motherboard, enable Integrated Graphics or iGPU Multi-Monitor.
- If settings were recently changed, load Optimized Defaults, save, and restart.
- If a BIOS update caused the issue, check the motherboard or PC maker’s support page for a newer firmware version.
Be careful not to change unrelated CPU, memory, or storage settings unless you know what they do. After saving BIOS changes, connect the HDMI display before booting into Windows. If the monitor shows the manufacturer logo or BIOS screen but goes blank only when Windows loads, the hardware path is likely working and the problem is still tied to Windows configuration or the graphics driver.
Inspect the HDMI port and graphics hardware
Shut down the PC, unplug the power cable, and examine the HDMI port with a flashlight. A faulty port may have bent pins, a loose inner tongue, corrosion, dust packed inside, or movement when the cable is inserted. Avoid forcing the cable into the port, since HDMI connectors can be damaged further if misaligned. If you use a desktop PC with a dedicated graphics card, also make sure the card is fully seated in the PCIe slot and that any required PCIe power connectors are firmly attached.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my HDMI port is broken or if it is just a cable or settings issue?
Start by testing the same HDMI cable and monitor with another device, such as a laptop, console, or streaming box. If they work there, the cable and display are probably fine, and the issue is more likely with your PC settings, graphics driver, or HDMI port. If another cable and another display still do not work on your PC, the HDMI port or graphics hardware may need repair.
What should I do if Windows detects the monitor but there is no picture?
Press Windows + P and try Duplicate, Extend, or Second screen only to make sure Windows is sending video to the HDMI display. Also check Settings > System > Display and select the external monitor, then lower the resolution and refresh rate to a common setting such as 1920 x 1080 at 60Hz. Some TVs and older monitors show a black screen if the PC is outputting an unsupported mode.
Can a graphics driver update fix an HDMI port that stopped working?
Yes, a corrupted, outdated, or recently updated graphics driver can stop HDMI output from working correctly. Open Device Manager, update the display adapter driver, or download the latest driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. If the problem started after a driver update, rolling back the driver or uninstalling and reinstalling it can also help.
Why does my PC work with DisplayPort or VGA but not HDMI?
This usually means the graphics card is working, but the HDMI-specific connection path has a problem. It could be a bad HDMI cable, a damaged HDMI port, a disabled input on the monitor or TV, or a driver issue affecting HDMI output only. Test a different HDMI port on the monitor or GPU if available, and confirm the display is set to the correct HDMI input.
When should I stop troubleshooting and take the PC in for repair?
If you have tried mulle HDMI cables, multiple displays, updated or reinstalled drivers, and checked Windows display settings with no success, hardware failure becomes more likely. Physical signs such as a loose HDMI port, bent pins, no signal from any HDMI device, or a port that only works when the cable is held at an angle point to damage. For desktops, a replacement graphics card may solve it; for laptops or motherboard HDMI ports, professional repair is usually the safer option.
Bottom Line
An HDMI port that is not working on a PC is often caused by something simple, such as a loose cable, the wrong monitor input, incorrect display mode, or an outdated graphics driver. Start with the quick checks first, then move on to Windows display settings, driver updates, and hardware testing if the screen still stays blank.
If none of the fixes work, try another monitor or HDMI adapter to narrow down whether the issue is with the PC, cable, or display. When the port appears physically damaged or no HDMI device is detected at all, it may be time to contact the PC manufacturer or a repair technician.
