An HDMI dummy plug can fix game streaming when a headless Windows PC has no display for its capture path to grab. It presents display information to the host so Windows and the GPU can create an output. It will not improve Wi-Fi, reduce encoding latency by itself, or guarantee a higher frame rate—and the available sources do not establish that a particular $4 plug fixed this exact setup.
Why a headless gaming PC may fail to stream
Game-streaming software captures the host PC’s video output and sends it over the network. If the host has no monitor connected, Windows or its GPU may not expose an output for the capture software. Parsec’s Windows-specific guidance says this can cause host capture to fail: Running Parsec on a headless gaming PC or a server.

A display emulator, commonly called an HDMI dummy plug or headless display adapter, supplies display-identification information so the computer behaves as if a monitor is attached. The adapter is not a capture card or a streaming service: the operating system, graphics driver, and selected capture method still determine whether an image is available to stream. The manufacturer describes its device as causing the operating system to detect a connected display: Headless Ghost product information.
When a physical dummy plug is the right fix
Consider one if the host runs without a monitor and your streaming software cannot capture its desktop or game output. The key is the missing display output—not that the computer is streaming over a network. A physical plug may also suit a Linux capture configuration that specifically requires an attached output, but Linux behavior is configuration-dependent.

- 1 pack 4K HDMI dummy plug makes PC to enable GPU for doing tasks: high resolution GPU accelerated remote desktop and GPGPU operations like cryptocurrency mining rig, rendering and simulations
- Compact dummy HDMI headless ghost adapter emulates a high resolution up to 4K 60hz 4096x2160 display to make a computer run "headless" (without monitor, keyboard and mouse)
- Simple headless ghost display emulator HDMI connector is plug-and-play on Windows MAC OS Linux; no driver or external powered needed; solves the Apple OSX headless display issue
- Gold plated fit-headless HDMI dummy dongle ensures stable digital signal and unlocks the full potential of graphics card, ideal for twitch game streaming, OBS, VR, crypto mining and using Mac Mini server with screen sharing, etc.
- Small low-cost virtual screen display HDMI emulator plug is a must-have saver for server and colocation farms, SOHO and home servers and remote-deployed headless PCs
For example, one project documents a particular Wayland, Nvidia, Sunshine, and Moonlight setup using KMS capture, along with constraints in that project’s configuration. That report is not a compatibility guarantee for other Linux systems or capture paths: edid-generator project documentation.
What to check before buying
- Connector: Match the plug to the host GPU’s available output, such as HDMI or DisplayPort. A connector that does not fit the relevant output cannot provide the needed display information.
- Resolution and refresh rate: Confirm that the plug advertises a mode your GPU and streaming setup can use. Do not assume a low-cost adapter supports 4K or high refresh rates unless its exact listing says so.
- HDR, color, and audio: Check these capabilities if your stream depends on them. EDID—the display information the host reads—can describe resolution, frame rate, HDR format, bit depth, and audio capabilities. Elgato explains these fields in its EDID configuration documentation.
- Compatibility: The GPU, driver, operating system, capture method, and advertised display modes all matter. A plug does not make unsupported modes or capture paths work.
Incorrect or unsupported EDID modes can lead to a black screen, an error, no signal, or an unexpected output. Elgato’s guidance concerns its named capture products, but the general practical lesson is to match the modes being advertised to the equipment and stream you intend to use; its settings should not be assumed to apply to every capture card.

- Will work with any graphics card that has HDMI output. No incompatibility problems, if regular LCD monitor works with particular output then these dummy plugs will also work with confidence as they act exactly the same as real LCD monitor.
- Works with Windows, OSX, Linux and just about everything else Ultra-compact, low profile design
- No drivers, no configuration, no power cable - just set and forget
- Allows for high resolution, GPU accelerated remote desktop.
- Acts as a dummy plug for use with GPU tasks such as crypto currency mining Works great with Virtual Desktop (HDMI2K,4K,DVI,DP,MINIDP)HEADLESS,(HDMI ,VGA,DVI)PASS-THROUGH EDID PLEASE ENTER THE STORE TO PURCHASE
Try software display emulation on eligible Windows setups
A physical adapter is not the only possible solution. Parsec documents a Virtual Display Driver as an alternative for eligible Warp and Teams customers. Check the current requirements in Parsec’s headless-PC guidance before choosing that route. Its availability is tied to the service’s stated eligibility, so it is not a universal free replacement for hardware.
If you use a capture card, distinguish its EDID settings
A capture card may offer EDID controls of its own; those are different from a standalone dummy plug. For supported Elgato devices, the documented modes include:

- 4K@60Hz HDR VIRTUAL DISPLAY: This BKFK HDMI EDID emulator uses EDID emulation to keep a virtual screen active without a physical monitor. It supports up to 3840×2160 at 60Hz (4:2:0) and 1920×1080 at 120Hz, helping enable smoother hardware-accelerated remote desktop, video editing, rendering, and development workflows. Available display modes may vary by GPU and operating system.
- BUILT FOR HEADLESS PC SETUPS: This dummy HDMI plug is designed for remote-deployed PCs, home servers, SOHO systems, colocation environments, and mini servers. It provides a persistent display target for remote management without keeping a physical monitor connected, helping reduce desk space, monitor power use, and the cost of maintaining dedicated displays.
- PLUG & PLAY HDMI EMULATOR: No drivers, software, external power supply, or configuration utility required. Simply insert it into an HDMI output and select a supported resolution in your operating system. Ideal for unattended PCs, remote access, screen sharing, simulations, workstation rendering, and other headless applications. Not an HDMI transmitter or receiver.
- ALUMINUM HOUSING WITH STATUS LED: The compact BKFK HDMI dongle features a durable aluminum shell for improved heat dissipation and everyday wear resistance. An integrated LED provides a quick visual indication of connection status, while the low-profile design is suitable for long-term use with home labs, server racks, workstations, and remotely managed computers.
- WIDE SYSTEM COMPATIBILITY: Works with most HDMI-equipped desktops, laptops, mini PCs, and discrete graphics cards running Windows, macOS, Linux, and other common operating systems. Suitable for remote desktop, VNC, game streaming, screen sharing, VR setups, home servers, and virtual display workflows. Connect to an HDMI output for use.
- Merged: Combines the capabilities of the display and capture device.
- Internal: Uses an EDID supplied by the capture device. Elgato recommends this mode for a dual-PC setup using the capture input without connecting the capture device’s HDMI output.
- Display: Copies the EDID from the connected display.
These descriptions apply to the Elgato products covered by its EDID configuration instructions; other capture devices may use different controls or terminology.

The supplied evidence does not verify the purchase price, exact model, or outcome behind the headline’s personal claim. Prices vary by seller and date, and no comparative test establishes a typical success rate, latency reduction, or frame-rate increase. Treat the $4 figure as an individual purchase price only when supported by that buyer’s receipt or listing, not as a general market price.
