Use an HDMI cable when both devices have compatible HDMI ports. Choose an adapter when the connectors do not match, space makes a straight plug impractical, or the devices use different video interfaces. For conversions between interfaces, verify the adapter’s direction and supported video modes; its connector shape alone does not tell you what it can do.
HDMI adapter or cable: which one fits your setup?
| Your setup | What you need | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Both devices have matching HDMI ports | An HDMI cable | Required resolution, refresh rate, features, cable length, and cable category |
| The devices use different HDMI connector sizes | A compatible connector adapter, or a cable with the needed connector at each end | Connector types and the adapter maker’s stated use case |
| A nearby wall, cabinet, or recessed port blocks a straight plug | A suitable angled adapter, pigtail, or other clearance-friendly arrangement | Fit, bend and clearance, installation requirements, and supported features |
| The source and display use different video interfaces, such as DisplayPort and HDMI | A conversion adapter or converter designed for that connection | Source-to-display direction, resolution, refresh rate, and audio or other required features |
| A USB-C source needs to connect to an HDMI display | A compatible USB-C-to-HDMI cable or connection, if the source supports HDMI Alt Mode | Confirm video-output support in the source device’s specifications; USB-C alone does not establish it |
When an HDMI cable is the right choice
A cable carries the signal between compatible ports. If both devices have standard HDMI Type A ports, connect them with an HDMI cable; buying an adapter will not improve a port match that already exists. If the devices have different HDMI connector sizes, use a cable with the appropriate ends or a connector adapter specified for that combination.

These are category capabilities, not guarantees that your source, display, or every other part of the connection supports the same resolution or refresh rate. Check the system’s requirements, including HDR and other desired features, and account for the cable run. For official category identification, HDMI LA says the cable jacket should show the official cable name; packaging should display the cable-name logo and/or applicable certification label. When an adapter is useful
Matching different HDMI connector forms
A passive HDMI adapter can couple HDMI plug and receptacle connections or change between connector forms such as Type A, Type C, and Type D. It may be a small attachment, a short pigtail, or part of an adjustable cable arrangement. This is useful when connector size or physical clearance is the issue, but the adapter must match the ports and the manufacturer’s stated use case.
HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. says passive adapters work with compliant HDMI devices and cables “under the specific use cases defined by the HDMI Passive Adapter manufacturer.” Its passive-adapter guideline supports the HDMI 1.4b feature range; that guidance should not be treated as a specification for every adapter or as a blanket statement about later HDMI specification features. Check the HDMI passive-adapter guidance and the exact product specifications.

Changing between video interfaces
A connection between different standards—such as DisplayPort and HDMI, or HDMI and VGA—may need signal conversion, not just a physical connector change. Identify the source (the device sending video) and the display (the device receiving it), then confirm that the exact adapter supports that direction and your desired resolution, refresh rate, audio, and other features. Some adapters are directional, so a product that works from one interface to another may not work in reverse.
Capabilities vary by configuration. Intel notes that display adapters can be associated with image, audio, flicker, or feature problems; Plugable’s guide explains that direction and supported resolution or refresh rate depend on the source, adapter or cable, and display. Consult Intel’s HDMI cable and connector guidance and Plugable’s explanation of directional video connections, along with the adapter maker’s model-specific details.

USB-C does not automatically mean HDMI video
Some USB-C source devices support HDMI Alt Mode, which lets them connect to an HDMI display over a cable without a protocol or connector adapter dongle. The source device must support it: the presence of a USB-C port by itself does not prove that the port can output HDMI video. Check the device specifications before choosing a cable or adapter. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes this option in its HDMI Alt Mode over USB Type-C overview.

Check these details before you connect everything
- Port match: Are both ends HDMI, different HDMI connector sizes, or different video interfaces?
- Adapter function: Does it simply couple compatible HDMI connectors, or convert a signal between interfaces?
- Direction: If it converts interfaces, does the product explicitly support your source-to-display direction?
- Video capability: Do the source, cable or adapter, and display support the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, audio, and other features you need?
- Physical installation: Will a straight plug fit, or do you need an angled connector, pigtail, different cable length, or an in-wall-suitable arrangement?
- Verification: Does the cable show the appropriate official category or certification labeling, and does the adapter’s model specification match your setup?
If the connection does not work
- No physical fit: Recheck the connector form and orientation. Do not force a plug or assume that two connectors with similar shapes are interchangeable.
- No picture or unstable picture after a conversion: Confirm the adapter’s direction and supported video modes, then check the source and display settings and the capabilities of every part of the signal path.
- Picture works but audio or a feature is missing: Check whether the adapter and both connected devices support that specific feature; connector fit alone does not establish feature support.
- USB-C video is unavailable: Confirm that the source device supports video output through USB-C and HDMI Alt Mode, rather than relying on the port’s shape.
