How does HDHomeRun work?
Connect an antenna or another supported broadcast source to the HDHomeRun tuner with coaxial cable. Connect the tuner to your home network through your router, then use a compatible app or client on a supported viewing device to watch available channels. The tuner converts the incoming signal into a network stream; it does not improve weak reception or provide channels that are not available at your location. For US over-the-air television, the practical first step is to check which stations reach your home and choose an antenna suited to those conditions. Channel availability and reception can vary by location, antenna placement, and obstructions. A channel scan can only find signals the antenna receives.

- An HDHomeRun tuner compatible with the broadcast standard and signal you intend to receive.
- A suitable antenna and coaxial cable for US over-the-air broadcasts, unless using another supported signal source.
- A home router and network connection for the tuner and viewing devices. The tuner connects to the network through the router; do not assume it has built-in Wi-Fi.
- A compatible HDHomeRun app or supported client on the device you plan to watch on.
- For DVR recording, storage and DVR software. These can be configured after live TV is working.

Which HDHomeRun model should you choose?

Choose by simultaneous use
Think about how many channels household members may watch or record at the same time. The DUO has two tuners; the QUATRO and FLEX 4K have four. More tuners provide more simultaneous tuning capacity, but they do not add channels to your local lineup.

Choose FLEX 4K only if ATSC 3.0 matters locally
ATSC 3.0 support does not ensure that every NextGen TV broadcast will play. SiliconDust warns that some ATSC 3.0 channels may be DRM-encrypted and will not work. The company says that when a channel is encrypted, FLEX 4K uses its ATSC 1.0 version when one is available. This is the manufacturer’s disclosure, not a guarantee about every station or market. Check local station conditions before paying extra for ATSC 3.0 support.
How to get live TV working
- Check local reception. Identify the broadcasts available where you live and choose an antenna appropriate to your reception conditions.
- Connect the signal. Attach the antenna’s coaxial cable to the tuner’s antenna input.
- Connect the tuner to your network. Use the network connection described for your model and connect through your home router. Wi-Fi on a viewing device is not the same as Wi-Fi built into the tuner.
- Install a compatible client. Set up an HDHomeRun app or supported client on the device you will use to watch.
- Scan for channels. Run the channel scan in the applicable app or setup flow. If expected channels are missing, check reception, antenna placement, and cable connections before assuming the tuner is at fault.
- Test live viewing. Confirm that channels play on the devices you care about before configuring recordings.

How HDHomeRun DVR works
Live TV and DVR are separate parts of the setup. Recording requires storage and DVR software; a tuner alone is not a recording library. SiliconDust describes USB storage on FLEX devices, network storage, and third-party DVR options. Choose storage based on your existing equipment and how much recorded programming you want to keep: the cited product information establishes storage choices, not a universal capacity recommendation.
SiliconDust’s current FLEX 4K listing says basic DVR functionality does not require a subscription, while paid TV guide data supports advanced automatic-recording features. Check the current listing and software details for the model and feature set you plan to use. What HDHomeRun can—and cannot—replace
HDHomeRun can make locally receivable broadcast channels available around the home and can support recording when you add storage and DVR software. Whether that replaces a paid-TV service depends on what you watch. The available product information does not establish that it supplies every cable channel, paid live-sports package, or streaming service; treat it as a way to access and distribute supported broadcast TV, not as a promise of a one-for-one cable replacement.
