HDFC Bank lists savings-account interest at 2.50% per annum across balances, while fixed-deposit (FD) rates vary by tenure, deposit amount and customer category. For deposits below ₹3 crore, the bank’s table effective 19 August 2026 includes rates of 6.45% for 18 months to under 21 months and 6.50% for 3 years 1 day to under 4 years 7 months. These are dated rates, not standing offers: compare the rate available when you book, along with access to your money, payout timing and tax.
What HDFC Bank’s listed rates mean
Savings account
HDFC Bank lists savings interest at 2.50% per annum across account balances, effective 24 June 2025. Interest is calculated on the daily balance and credited quarterly. The rate is therefore not a promise of a fixed return on a lump sum for a chosen term: the balance can change as you deposit or withdraw money. HDFC Bank savings-account rates and requirements

Fixed deposits
FD rates depend on tenure, deposit amount and customer category. For deposits below ₹3 crore, HDFC’s table effective 19 August 2026 lists 6.45% per annum for 18 months to under 21 months, and 6.50% per annum for 3 years 1 day to under 4 years 7 months. Other tenure buckets have their own rates. The applicable rate is the one prevailing when the bank processes the deposit or receives the funds, so check the rate at booking and its value date. Compare the same amount over the same period
Start with the amount you can set aside and the date you may need it back. Then compare the savings interest expected on the balance you will actually maintain with the FD’s maturity value or chosen interest payouts. A headline annual rate alone does not show how much you will receive, when you will receive it, or what happens if you need the money early.
- Match the rate category: Check the FD’s deposit amount band, tenure and customer category. HDFC lists additional rates for eligible resident senior citizens; those rates do not apply to NRIs. Residency and age eligibility matter.
- Match the time horizon: Compare an FD only for the period the money can realistically stay deposited. Do not assume the quoted rate will apply if you close it early.
- Compare actual payout choices: Savings interest is credited quarterly. An FD can pay interest periodically or at maturity, depending on the option selected.
- Account for access: Savings funds remain available in the account. An FD commits the deposit for a selected tenure, and premature closure can change the interest earned.
- Consider account conditions: Check any minimum-balance requirement or other terms for the savings-account product you hold, rather than assuming the Regular Savings Account figures apply to every account.
- Compare after tax: Both types of interest have tax implications. Your tax position, not just the bank’s withholding, determines the final after-tax outcome.
How payout timing changes an FD comparison
For FDs with tenures above six months, HDFC says interest is calculated quarterly. If you choose monthly interest payout, the bank calculates interest for the quarter and pays it monthly at a discounted rate compared with the standard deposit rate. A periodic payout should not be treated as identical to the cumulative value of an FD whose interest is retained until maturity.

HDFC calculates FD interest using actual days in the year: 365 days in a non-leap year and 366 in a leap year. To get an exact illustration, use the bank’s calculator or booking screen with your principal, dates, tenure, applicable rate and payout instruction. Without those inputs, a maturity amount would be misleading.

What to know before closing an FD early
Premature withdrawal can reduce the return. HDFC’s terms describe an early-closure calculation based on the rate applicable on the booking date for the period the deposit actually remained with the bank, with a one-percentage-point reduction for applicable deposits. The precise treatment depends on the deposit type and its terms. Domestic and NRO deposits liquidated within seven days do not earn interest, according to the bank’s terms. Check the conditions for your specific FD before booking; do not assume you will receive the contracted maturity interest if you withdraw early. Check savings-account requirements and eligibility
HDFC lists these balance requirements for its Regular Savings Account: ₹10,000 average monthly balance for metro and urban branches, ₹5,000 for semi-urban branches, and ₹2,500 average quarterly balance for rural branches. These are requirements for that account product, not interest rates; requirements can differ by product and location. Verify the terms for your own account before factoring them into a comparison. For an FD, confirm your residency, age eligibility, deposit amount and tenure against the rate table. HDFC’s senior-citizen rates are for eligible resident deposits and do not apply to NRIs. A rate shown for another customer category may not be available to you.

Include tax in the comparison
HDFC states that FD interest is taxable as income from other sources and savings-account interest is subject to applicable tax laws. TDS is tax withheld at source; it is not necessarily your final tax liability. Tax treatment depends on current rules and your circumstances, so verify current official guidance or consult a qualified tax adviser rather than using a bank’s TDS threshold as a personal tax calculation. A practical decision rule
- Keep money you may need at short notice in an accessible account, while checking the account’s terms and balance requirements.
- Consider an FD for money you can leave for a defined period, after checking the current applicable rate, payout option and early-closure terms.
- If you may need only part of the funds, compare setting aside that portion separately rather than treating the full balance as either fully liquid or fully committed.
- Compare expected amounts over the same dates and on the same tax basis. Use HDFC’s calculator or booking illustration for an exact FD figure.
