The backend must verify the returned token with hCaptcha and allow the protected request only when verification succeeds. Whether the integration works therefore depends on the server-side check, correct credentials and request formatting, and safe handling of retries and errors—not simply whether the widget displayed a challenge.
What “bypass” means in an application pipeline
For an application owner or developer, the practical question is whether a CAPTCHA result is correctly enforced when a user submits a protected action. A rendered widget or successful frontend callback is not the authorization decision. hCaptcha states, “A frontend callback alone does not authorize the request.” The server must verify the token independently before it accepts the action (hCaptcha Developer Guide: Server-Side Verification).

How the request should flow
- Render the widget. The page loads hCaptcha’s client SDK and renders the widget with the public sitekey. When the challenge succeeds, the client receives an
h-captcha-responsetoken. - Send the token with the user’s request. Include it with the form submission or asynchronous request to your application server. The token is a value for the server to verify, not proof the client can validate on its own.
- Verify on the server. The server sends a URL-encoded POST request to https://api.hcaptcha.com/siteverify, with the token and the account secret. Include the expected sitekey as well, so a token issued for a different sitekey cannot be used for this action.
- Gate the protected action. Proceed only if the verification response reports
success: true. If verification fails or cannot be completed, reject the action and give the user a way to obtain a new token and retry.
The secret belongs on the server; never expose it in browser code. hCaptcha’s server-verification guidance and Developer Guide describe the verification request and integration.

The backend check actually controls access
Check that the protected operation happens only after server-side verification succeeds. If the application accepts a request based only on a widget callback, a client-supplied success flag, or the presence of a token, the CAPTCHA is not gating that operation.

The secret and sitekey match the issuing configuration
Use the secret associated with the hCaptcha account and site configuration that issued the token. A sitekey/secret mismatch can cause verification to fail. Send the expected sitekey during verification, and keep the secret out of the client.
The token is fresh and used once
hCaptcha tokens are single-use and must be checked shortly after issuance. Do not reuse a token after submission, a failed verification attempt, or expiration. On a retry, obtain a fresh token. In React and Vue integrations, clear or reset component state after submission attempts so a stale token is not accidentally resubmitted (hCaptcha Developer Guide).

The request uses the required encoding
Send verification fields in a POST body using application/x-www-form-urlencoded. Do not send them as JSON or as a GET query string. A standard HTTP library or JavaScript’s URLSearchParams can handle form encoding.

Failures reject the protected request
Treat a missing token, an unsuccessful verification response, an HTTP or API error, an exception, a malformed response, or a timeout as a rejected verification. Do not silently permit the action when hCaptcha cannot be reached. Return an understandable retry path that requests a new token; the Node.js example follows this fail-closed approach (hCaptcha Developer Guide).

Any submitted IP address comes from a trusted source
hCaptcha recommends the optional remoteip parameter, which may improve accuracy. If you pass it, derive the address through your trusted network or proxy configuration. Do not treat arbitrary client-supplied forwarded headers as authoritative user IP information.
Modes change what the user sees and what the application consumes

For systems that cannot place a client-side integration on every request, hCaptcha describes Backend API Protection as a server-to-server analysis option using metadata available to the backend. Evaluate whether its available signals and risk outputs fit the decisions your application needs to make, alongside coverage, user interruption, and sitekey and credential management (hCaptcha Enterprise; hCaptcha Developer Guide).

Check these items when an integration fails
- Confirm the request reaches your backend with the token under the expected
h-captcha-responsefield name. - Confirm the backend calls the official siteverify endpoint with a URL-encoded POST body containing the token and server-held secret.
- Include the expected sitekey and inspect the response’s
success, error codes, hostname, and timestamp as appropriate to your integration. - Check for a missing, malformed, expired, already-used, or mismatched token, and for a secret that does not belong to the issuing site configuration.
- Make timeout, network exception, non-OK HTTP response, and malformed-response behavior explicit. Each should reject the protected action.
- For asynchronous React or Vue flows, clear token state on expiration or error and reset after each attempt. Acquire a new token before retrying.
- If you pass
remoteip, verify that it comes from a trusted proxy or network configuration.
Test without mistaking test keys for protection
Use only hCaptcha’s matching test sitekey and secret in a test environment. hCaptcha says test keys provide no anti-bot protection, so they must not be deployed as production protection. Exercise both expected success and rejection paths, including verification with a nonsense token, and confirm that failed checks do not authorize the protected action (hCaptcha Developer Guide).

hCaptcha Enterprise describes its risk-score scale as 0.0 for no risk through 1.0 for confirmed threat. Its migration guide warns that this direction differs from the reCAPTCHA score direction it describes. Do not copy existing thresholds unchanged: review which end of the scale your application treats as higher risk and adjust the decision logic accordingly (Switch from reCAPTCHA to hCaptcha).
