The best fit depends on the titles you want to watch. HBO Max centers on HBO, Max Originals, selected Warner Bros. and DC titles, and Discovery-related programming; Netflix offers a broad mix of films, series, anime, documentaries, games, and Netflix Originals. Check your specific must-watch titles in both services before subscribing: catalog descriptions are not a guarantee that a particular title is currently available.
What kind of watchlist does each service suit?
HBO Max
HBO Max’s official description highlights HBO series and films, Max Originals, selected Warner Bros. and DC titles, Cartoon Network, Looney Tunes, Adult Swim, and Discovery-related brands such as Home & Health and ID. It describes a programming mix, not a measured comparison of library size. HBO Max’s service description explains its positioning.

Netflix
Netflix describes its library in terms of movies, TV shows, games, anime, documentaries, and Netflix Originals. Its catalog positioning is broader than any one studio or genre, but it does not establish that a particular title is available today. See Netflix’s plan and service details.
Check the titles, not just the brands
- Write down five to ten titles you would use to justify a subscription.
- Search each title in both services’ apps or official catalogs.
- Compare the tiers required for your preferences, including ads, video quality, simultaneous streams, and downloads.
Catalog rights change, so verify close to the time you plan to subscribe. Without a specific watchlist, neither service can be named the universal winner.

How do US plan prices and features compare?
The following figures are the services’ US-listed prices and features on official pages accessed in 2026. Taxes may apply; HBO Max says its listed prices exclude taxes. Package or add-on billing can affect price and eligibility. HBO Max plan details and Netflix plan details are the official references.
| Plan | US price | Notable listed features |
|---|---|---|
| HBO Max Basic with Ads | $10.99/month or $109.99/year | Ads, Full HD, two streams. Annual price is billed yearly. |
| HBO Max Standard | $18.49/month or $184.99/year | Ad-free, Full HD, two streams, up to 30 downloads; select live sports included. |
| HBO Max Premium | $22.99/month or $229.99/year | Ad-free, 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos where available, four streams (two for sports), up to 100 downloads; select live sports included. |
| Netflix Standard with ads | $8.99/month | Ads, 1080p, two simultaneous devices, downloads on two supported devices; some titles are unavailable on this tier. |

| Netflix Premium | $26.99/month | Ad-free, 4K HDR, four simultaneous devices, downloads on six devices, up to two extra members, Netflix spatial audio. |
Netflix bills monthly and says it does not offer annual plans. HBO Max’s annual prices require paying upfront; compare them only if that billing arrangement works for you. Download availability and limits can depend on titles and devices.

What about sports, downloads, and household sharing?
Sports
HBO Max lists select live sports with Standard and Premium; Premium allows four streams overall, with two for sports. This does not mean every sport, event, or viewing situation is covered. Netflix’s reviewed plan details do not establish an equivalent sports lineup.
Downloads
HBO Max lists up to 30 downloads on Standard and up to 100 on Premium. Netflix lists downloads on two devices for its ad-supported and Standard plans, and six devices for Premium. Title, device, and other service restrictions may apply.

Sharing and extra members
Netflix says accounts are for people in the same household, defined through devices connected to the internet at the main residence. Plans may allow paid extra members outside that household. HBO Max lists an Extra Member option for eligible direct-billed subscribers; billing provider rules can affect who can use it and how the subscription is managed. Check the terms for your account before relying on sharing.

Will both services work on your TV?
Both services list support for common phones, tablets, TVs, streaming players, and consoles, including Roku devices. HBO Max’s device guidance says a supported Roku or Apple TV player can connect to a television that does not have the app. Netflix lists Roku TV and Roku Stick among its supported devices. A separate player is only relevant if your television lacks compatible app support; check current compatibility before buying hardware.

Can you bundle HBO Max or cancel later?
HBO Max lists a Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max bundle on its plan page, but bundle price and terms depend on the current offer. Netflix says members can change their plan or cancel at any time. For HBO Max, plan changes and cancellation depend on the provider billing the subscription, so use that provider’s account settings.
