Jenny Ring’s experience was that dialysis stood between her and the family she hoped to have; after a kidney transplant, she became a mother. Her words in an Irish Examiner profile are personal, not a medical rule: pregnancy on dialysis is possible for some people, but it carries serious risks and needs specialist care.
Jenny Ring’s path to motherhood
Ring’s father had renal failure and died in 2003, the year she married. In 2004, at 28, Ring developed renal failure and began dialysis. She received her first kidney transplant in 2005, after ten months on the transplant list. It failed three years later, and she has described returning to dialysis as devastating.
In June 2009, her brother John donated a kidney to her in a living-donor transplant. Ring said she quickly noticed more energy and an improvement in everyday life. The transplant also meant ongoing medication and regular blood tests. Her daughters were born in 2011 and 2013. “Without it, the births of my two daughters couldn’t have happened,” she said.
Ring’s headline remark, “Having children was important to me, but you can’t have children on dialysis,” describes her own circumstances and feelings. It should not be read as a universal medical statement that pregnancy during dialysis is impossible.

Can someone become pregnant while on dialysis?
Yes, pregnancy can happen during kidney failure, including for someone on dialysis. But it is often medically high-risk: the National Kidney Foundation says women with kidney failure are usually advised against pregnancy because risks to the mother and developing baby are high. Pregnancy may require close supervision, changes to medication, and more intensive dialysis. Kidney disease can also affect fertility through hormone changes and anemia.
A 2025 KDIGO conference report says fertility declines as kidney disease progresses and is lowest among women on dialysis. That describes a population trend, not an individual prediction. Whether pregnancy is possible or advisable depends on the person’s health and should be discussed with their kidney-care team and obstetric specialists.

How pregnancy after a transplant differs
For some people, fertility improves after a successful kidney transplant, and pregnancy is usually healthier and safer than during dialysis, according to the National Kidney Foundation. That does not mean a transplant guarantees fertility or a safe pregnancy: risks to the mother, baby, or transplanted kidney may make pregnancy inadvisable in an individual case.
| Consideration | Pregnancy during dialysis | Pregnancy after kidney transplant |
|---|---|---|
| Risk and feasibility | Possible, but generally high-risk; additional monitoring and dialysis may be needed, according to the National Kidney Foundation. | Often healthier and safer than during dialysis for some people, but not advisable in every case, according to the National Kidney Foundation. |
| Fertility | Fertility is lowest among women on dialysis, according to the 2025 KDIGO conference report. | Fertility can improve after transplant, according to the National Kidney Foundation. |
| Readiness and timing | Requires individualized discussion with kidney and obstetric specialists. | The National Kidney Foundation advises waiting at least one year after transplant or until the kidney is working well. KDIGO’s 2009 transplant-recipient guideline recommends waiting at least one year and attempting pregnancy only when kidney function is stable with less than 1 g/day proteinuria. |
| Medication | Pregnancy may require clinician-led medication changes. | Some anti-rejection medicines can harm a baby and may need to be changed before a planned pregnancy; changes must be managed by the transplant team. |
| Specialist care | Close medical supervision is important; care may involve kidney and obstetric specialists. | The National Kidney Foundation advises planning with the transplant team and an obstetrician specializing in high-risk pregnancy. |
What to discuss with a kidney and pregnancy team
Anyone considering pregnancy while living with kidney failure or after transplant should get advice tailored to their health rather than rely on a general rule or another person’s story. The 2025 KDIGO conference report emphasizes balanced, personalized preconception counseling, ideally with kidney and obstetric specialists and, when indicated, maternal-fetal medicine and reproductive medicine specialists.

Ring’s story includes a major change in what was possible for her, but it also makes clear that transplantation did not end her medical care. “A transplant isn’t a cure; it’s a treatment. I’m still on the journey,” she said in Helen O’Callaghan’s Irish Examiner interview. Her account shows what a transplant meant for her family, while the medical guidance makes clear that pregnancy decisions remain individual.
