Vault secures secrets, credentials, certificates, encryption workflows, and machine access. Cyera discovers and governs sensitive business data, access risk, DLP, and AI-data exposure. Choose Vault for a password, API key, database credential, or certificate; choose Cyera for the records, files, repositories, identities, and AI channels those credentials can reach. Many enterprises need both.
The short answer
| Requirement | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Store and retrieve application secrets | HashiCorp Vault |
| Generate short-lived database credentials | HashiCorp Vault |
| Manage PKI and certificates | HashiCorp Vault |
| Encrypt data inside application workflows | HashiCorp Vault |
| Discover and classify sensitive data | Cyera |
| Find excessive or unused access to sensitive data | Cyera |
| Modernize DLP or govern AI data access | Cyera |
| Understand what a compromised credential can reach | Both |
This is not an ordinary feature-versus-feature contest. A database password and a customer record are both sensitive, but they require different controls. Vault protects the credential and the operation that uses it; Cyera analyzes the data estate, access paths, and exposure created by that operation.

What each product is designed to protect
HashiCorp Vault: secrets and machine identity
Vault is an identity-based secrets and encryption-management system. It stores static secrets, issues dynamic credentials, manages certificates and PKI, supports authentication methods and policies, provides encryption services, and records access through audit mechanisms. Its central question is: which authenticated human, workload, or service may obtain this secret or invoke this cryptographic operation now? See the official Vault description and how Vault works.
Recommended Free Tools
- API tokens, passwords, cloud credentials, and database credentials
- Short-lived credentials with leasing, renewal, and revocation
- Certificates and PKI lifecycles
- Application encryption and tokenization workflows

Cyera: data security and exposure
Cyera presents a data-security platform covering data discovery and classification, data-security posture management (DSPM), data-access governance, DLP, AI security posture management, and runtime AI/data protection. Its question is: what sensitive data exists, who or what can access it, how is it being used, and where is the exposure? Product areas are described at Cyera’s platform overview, DSPM, and identity and access.

Can Cyera replace Vault?
Not for documented Vault-core requirements. The cited Cyera material does not establish a general-purpose secrets manager providing Vault-like secret retrieval APIs, dynamic database-credential generation, PKI issuance, secret leasing and revocation, application secret injection, or encryption-as-a-service. Cyera can identify data and access risks involving credentials, but that is different from operating the credential lifecycle.
Can Vault replace Cyera?
Not for DSPM, continuous data discovery, business-data classification, data-access risk analysis, DLP, or AI-data governance. Vault can protect a database credential or provide encryption, but it is not positioned in its documentation as a system that inventories an estate across cloud, SaaS, DBaaS, and on-premises stores, correlates sensitivity with activity, and remediates excessive access. Vault documentation is available at developer.hashicorp.com/vault/docs.

Self-managed operation includes high availability, storage, backups, upgrades, disaster recovery, sealing and unsealing, authentication, policy administration, audit-device management, and integration maintenance. HCP reduces infrastructure work, but its tiers, region, cluster size, and client-related pricing still matter; see the tier documentation.
Status note: HashiCorp says HCP Vault Secrets was no longer available to new customers after June 30, 2025, with end of life no later than July 1, 2026, depending on the Flex contract. As of August 18, 2026, new buyers should evaluate HCP Vault Dedicated or Vault Community Edition instead. Source: HashiCorp’s end-of-life notice.
Cyera choices
Cyera markets an agentless model supporting cloud, SaaS, DBaaS, and on-premises stores, with SaaS and customer-controlled deployment options. These are vendor claims, so evaluate each connector directly. Ask what permissions it needs, whether scans are read-only, what content or metadata leaves your environment, how long scanned content is retained, and which remediation actions require write access. See Cyera DSPM and Cyera’s company information.

Which team owns each platform?
- Vault: platform engineering, DevOps, cloud infrastructure, developer security, identity engineering, and security operations.
- Cyera: data security, cloud security, privacy, data governance, compliance, insider-risk, and CISO teams.
Vault work typically concerns authentication methods, secret paths, rotation, leases, and workload onboarding. Cyera work concerns exposed data, over-permissioned identities, classification, DLP incidents, and data-owner remediation.

Cyera directly markets AI-SPM, AI Guardian, and AI runtime protection for discovering AI assets, mapping them to identities and sensitive data, governing access, and controlling AI interactions. See AI-SPM, AI Guardian, and AI runtime protection.
Vault remains useful underneath an AI architecture for model-provider API keys, service-account credentials, database credentials, certificates, encryption keys, and workload identity. It does not by itself show which AI agent can read particular customer records, reveal unsanctioned AI use, or inspect sensitive prompts and outputs.

When to choose one—or both
Choose Vault when
- Credential sprawl is the immediate problem.
- Applications need a central secret store or short-lived database credentials.
- Certificates, PKI, rotation, revocation, or application encryption are important.
- Platform engineering can operate Vault or prefers HCP Vault Dedicated.
Choose Cyera when
- The organization cannot inventory sensitive data across cloud, SaaS, databases, and file stores.
- Access reviews reveal excessive, unused, or risky entitlements.
- Existing DLP creates too many false positives.
- Security teams must govern copilots, agents, or unsanctioned AI tools.
Deploy both when
- Applications use credentials to access regulated or proprietary data.
- A leaked secret could expose high-value records.
- You need machine-identity controls and data-exposure analysis.
- AI systems require secure service credentials as well as data-centric access governance.
A practical combined architecture
- Vault authenticates workloads and stores their credentials.
- Vault issues or rotates short-lived database and cloud credentials.
- Applications use those credentials to reach data stores.
- Cyera inventories and classifies the data in those stores.
- Cyera correlates sensitivity with identities, entitlements, and observed access.
- Data owners stage remediation for excessive or risky access.
- Vault protects credentials used by connector or remediation systems where the organization’s design supports that pattern.
- Both systems forward relevant events to SIEM and incident-response workflows.
This is a layered architectural pattern, not a claim that every Vault–Cyera connection is native or turnkey. Confirm supported editions, authentication methods, permissions, exchanged data, and workflow direction with both vendors.
Important trade-offs
Vault operational risk
Self-managed Vault can become difficult when policies are unclear, applications cache credentials beyond their leases, connection pools do not handle rotation, or disaster recovery does not preserve the expected access path. Test renewal, expiration, revocation, outages, and break-glass procedures—not only successful retrieval.
Cyera remediation risk
Discovery does not make permission removal safe. Removing access can break production applications, pipelines, analytics, legal processes, or shared drives. Start in read-only mode, validate ownership, prioritize high-risk findings, then remediate in stages. Classification accuracy must also be tested against your languages, business terms, structured and unstructured content, duplicates, and encrypted data. Cyera’s public precision, scan-scale, deployment-speed, and risk-reduction numbers are vendor-reported examples, not independent benchmarks; see its platform claims.

Leaked-key scenario
If an API key stored in Vault is compromised, Vault can rotate or revoke it. Cyera can help determine which connected data stores, identities, and access paths may expose sensitive records. Neither product alone replaces logging, detection, containment, forensics, and recovery.
Pricing and buying guidance
Vault pricing depends on edition and deployment. HCP Vault Dedicated uses tier, cluster, region, and—in some tiers—client-related factors; do not compare it with a flat per-user price. HashiCorp’s consumption information is at the pricing table. Cyera’s public material describes plan categories and directs buyers toward a scoped quote at its pricing page.
Request like-for-like proposals that specify data sources, volume, connectors, identities, modules, remediation rights, deployment location, support, retention, and implementation services. Do not treat Cyera as a cheaper Vault or Vault as a cheaper DSPM platform.
