Headset shipments have weakened, while millions still use VR and consumers continue to spend on its content. The clearest reading is that consumer VR is a functioning but niche market—not a technology on the verge of universal adoption, and not a dead one.
What the latest numbers say about VR
It helps to separate consumer VR headsets from the wider category of extended-reality (XR) headwear, which also includes lighter glasses. The figures below measure different things and time periods, so they should not be treated as a single continuous market series.

| Measure | What was reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer VR headset sales | 6.9 million units in 2024, down 10% from 7.7 million in 2023, according to Omdia. | Annual consumer headset sales; evidence of contraction, not evidence that sales stopped. |
| Active VR headsets | Omdia estimated 21.9 million active headsets in 2024, down 8%. | An estimate of active use, not a count of everyone who has ever bought a headset. |
| VR content spending | Consumers spent $904 million on VR content in 2024. Omdia forecast $1.3 billion by 2029. | The 2029 figure is a forecast, not a realized result. |
| XR headwear shipments | 1.9 million units in the first half of 2026, down 38.7% year over year, according to Omdia. | This broader measure includes XR glasses as well as headsets; it is not directly comparable with annual consumer VR headset sales. |
Omdia said consumer VR headset sales declined in 2024 and forecast further decline in 2025. That was a forecast made at the time, not a final measured 2025 result. The later first-half 2026 XR figure offers newer context, but covers a broader product category and a half-year period.

There is an active, if limited, audience
Valve’s optional Steam Hardware & Software Survey found VR headsets among 1.35% of surveyed Steam users in September 2026. The survey is a view of Steam participants, not a global adoption rate. It mainly informs the PC-connected segment and does not count all standalone headset use. Its listed devices included Quest 3, Quest 2, Quest 3S, Valve Index, Pico 4, and PS VR2. Valve’s survey is useful for understanding that platform’s sample, not for estimating the number of VR users worldwide.

Content spending shows a market, not mass adoption
Omdia’s estimate of $904 million in consumer VR content spending in 2024 indicates that people continue to pay for VR experiences. Its forecast of $1.3 billion by 2029 suggests expected growth in that spending, but forecasts can change and do not prove that the audience will become mainstream.
Quest remains an active product line
Meta’s FY2025 filing identifies Meta Quest devices and Horizon Store content as current VR offerings, and describes gaming, fitness, entertainment, and social experiences as uses for Quest. These are the company’s descriptions of its products, rather than independent measures of how many people use them. Meta does not report Quest unit sales in the cited filing. Meta’s FY2025 Form 10-K also discusses risks and investments across a much broader Reality Labs portfolio.

Why lighter XR glasses are gaining attention
Omdia reported that XR glasses accounted for 25.8% of XR headwear shipments in the first half of 2026, up from 10.2% in the first half of 2025. In the same periods, Meta’s share of overall XR headwear shipments fell from 71.3% to 48.2%. Those are shipment shares—not shares of all devices already in use—and the overall category includes more than VR headsets.

Omdia Senior Analyst Qiran Ju said XR glasses are gaining momentum because consumers are increasingly willing to trade some immersion for less friction. That observation points to a practical difference: lighter glasses may be easier to wear or use casually, while a VR headset is designed to create a more immersive experience. Convenience can broaden the appeal of wearable displays without making them a substitute for high-immersion gaming or training.

What Meta’s investment does—and does not—show
Meta reported $21.40 billion in total Reality Labs investments in 2025. That total covers a portfolio including VR and AR devices, software and content, neural interfaces, and other long-term technology work; it should not be described as a standalone VR budget. Meta said it expected about 70% of Reality Labs operating expenses in 2026 to go to wearables initiatives and 30% to VR and Horizon initiatives. This is the company’s stated expected allocation, not a direct measure of headset sales or consumer demand.
The figures suggest that Meta continues to invest in the area while placing greater relative emphasis on wearables. They do not establish that VR will disappear, nor do they demonstrate that mass adoption is imminent.

So, has the VR hype passed?
The hype around rapid, inevitable mainstream adoption has cooled. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: VR remains a real consumer category with active users, ongoing content spending, and established uses, but headset sales have contracted and broader XR attention is shifting toward lower-friction glasses. Shipment and survey estimates are not audited global counts of owners, and no single source captures everyone who uses VR.
For someone choosing a device, the useful question is less whether VR is “over” and more whether its trade-offs fit the intended use. Standalone headsets such as Quest can be used without a PC or console for supported experiences; PC-connected and console ecosystems have their own hardware and content requirements. Glasses may prioritize wearability and convenience over the immersive environment a headset can provide. A lighter device can win on everyday friction without replacing a headset for games, training, or other experiences that depend on immersion.
