For long-term cryptocurrency savings, a properly set up hardware wallet generally offers stronger protection from malware on an internet-connected phone or computer: it keeps keys offline and signs transactions on the device. A software wallet is usually more convenient for frequent, smaller transactions. Neither makes funds safe if someone gets your recovery phrase or you approve a malicious transaction.
How the two wallet types differ
A cryptocurrency wallet manages the keys used to access and authorize transactions; the coins themselves remain recorded on their respective networks. With self-custody, you control the keys. A wallet hosted by an exchange is different: the provider controls them, so access also depends on that provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. Bitcoin.org explains the risks and responsibilities of holding cryptocurrency.

Hardware wallets
A hardware wallet is a purpose-built device designed to keep private keys offline and sign transactions locally. This reduces the chance that malware on a connected computer or phone can directly extract the keys. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as a balance of very high security and ease of use, but that is general guidance—not a guarantee for every device or user. Read Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance.
Software wallets
A software wallet runs on a general-purpose phone or computer. It can be convenient for regular payments, but its keys are more exposed to threats affecting that device, including malware, phishing, and keylogging. Bitcoin.org advises keeping only small amounts on a computer or mobile device for everyday use and keeping the rest in a safer environment. See its recommendations for securing a wallet.

Which is safer depends on what you need protection from
The central difference is where the keys are exposed. A hardware wallet can reduce risk from a compromised computer or phone because signing happens on the wallet device. It does not prevent someone from tricking you into approving a transaction, stealing the device, or obtaining your recovery phrase. A software wallet avoids carrying a separate device, but relies more directly on the security of the phone or computer it runs on.
There is no sound percentage by which hardware wallets are “safer”: the cited guidance is descriptive, not an independent head-to-head test or incident-rate study. Your setup and habits matter. A hardware wallet used carelessly can still lose funds; a software wallet on a well-maintained device may suit a limited everyday balance.

Choose based on your use and ability to manage backups
- For savings you do not need to spend often: Consider a hardware wallet if you can protect its recovery phrase and carefully verify transactions before signing.
- For frequent, smaller transactions: A software wallet may be more practical. Keep the balance limited to what you need for routine use.
- For exchange convenience: An exchange account is custodial, not the same as a self-custody software wallet. You rely on the provider to safeguard the keys and allow withdrawals.
- For greater resilience against one point of failure: Bitcoin users with advanced needs can consider multisignature, which requires multiple independent approvals. It adds setup and recovery complexity.
A split approach is practical for many people: keep a modest spending balance on an everyday wallet and hold longer-term savings in a more carefully secured offline arrangement. The right balance depends on how often you transact, the threats you face, and whether you can reliably manage backups.
Protect the recovery phrase and verify every transaction
The recovery phrase is a master backup: someone who obtains it may restore access to the wallet, while losing it can permanently cut off your access. Ledger’s hardware-wallet safety guidance warns that a hardware wallet does not prevent social engineering, physical threats, or human error.

- Generate the phrase using the wallet’s intended setup process. Do not use a preconfigured phrase.
- Write it down and keep it private and offline. Do not photograph it, save it to cloud photo storage, type it into a phone or computer, or share it with anyone claiming to provide support.
- Store the backup somewhere secure. Durable storage media and more than one physical location can help, but extra copies also create more opportunities for unauthorized discovery.
- Before approving a transaction, check the receiving address and transaction details on the wallet’s own display when the device supports that verification.
- Keep wallet software and the connected phone or computer updated; updates can provide stability and security fixes.
A purpose-made physical backup is optional, not a substitute for privacy and secure storage. Any backup can be lost, stolen, damaged, or discovered; choose a method you can protect and recover from.
