For NFTs you plan to hold long term, a hardware wallet generally offers stronger protection for the signing keys: transactions require approval on a physical device. A software wallet is usually easier for frequent marketplace activity. Many collectors use both—keeping everyday transactions in a hot wallet and higher-value NFTs in a cold wallet.
The wallet choice changes how you protect keys and approve transactions; it does not move an NFT off the blockchain. Neither option guarantees safety.

What is a crypto wallet, and what does it store?
An NFT is recorded on a blockchain. A wallet controls the keys used to access the associated address and sign transactions. OpenSea explains that NFTs and cryptocurrency are stored directly on the blockchain and accessed through a self-custodial wallet: What is a crypto wallet?

A hardware wallet is a physical device that protects the wallet’s recovery phrase and private keys and requires interaction with the device to approve transactions. With a software wallet, signing happens through an app or browser extension, making it convenient for connected marketplaces and decentralized apps (dapps), but exposing the signing environment to risks on the computer or phone.

Hardware wallet vs. software wallet for NFTs
| Decision | Hardware wallet | Software wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Key protection | Keys are protected by a physical device, and transactions require device approval. Access to the wallet interface alone is less likely to be enough to move assets. | Signing takes place in an internet-connected app or browser environment, where a compromised device or malware can increase exposure. |
| Marketplace use | Often requires connecting the device to a compatible wallet interface and physically approving transactions. | Usually simpler for routine marketplace connections, browsing, minting, listing, and trading. |
| Recovery | The recovery phrase remains essential. Losing the device need not mean losing the wallet if the phrase is backed up safely; anyone who obtains the phrase may control the wallet. | Recovery depends on the wallet’s recovery method, often a phrase. MetaMask says it cannot recover a lost phrase in its self-custody setup. |
| Transaction safety | The separate approval step helps, but you can still approve a harmful transaction. Review the details shown on the device and sign only expected requests. | Review dapp requests and approvals in the wallet interface, and avoid granting broader permissions than needed. |
| Best fit | Higher-value NFTs and assets held for longer periods, if you can maintain a secure offline backup. | Frequent, lower-value activity; keep only assets you can afford to risk in a hot wallet. |
How to divide long-term storage from marketplace activity
OpenSea recommends using separate hot and cold wallets for different jobs: a hot wallet for everyday transactions and a cold wallet for long-term storage. A cold wallet can be a hardware wallet, or a software wallet whose private key and recovery phrase are kept offline. This arrangement can reduce how often a long-term holding is exposed to routine marketplace interactions, but it depends on keeping the separate credentials secure.
- Use a hot wallet for routine activity. Connect it to marketplaces for browsing, listing, minting, or trading, and limit the assets kept there to what you need for those interactions.
- Use a cold wallet for long-term holdings. Keep higher-value NFTs at an address whose signing credentials are not routinely used in connected apps.
- Check compatibility before moving assets. Confirm that the marketplace, wallet interface, and relevant blockchain support the connection and NFT you intend to use.
What crypto wallets can I use with OpenSea?
Compatibility depends on the platform, wallet, and supported blockchain. OpenSea’s help page, dated July 17, 2026, says it supports wallets that support EIP-6963, including MetaMask, Coinbase Wallet, and Robinhood Wallet; it also says multi-signature wallets are not supported at that time. See OpenSea’s wallet compatibility guidance for its current list.

MetaMask documents hardware-wallet connections through direct connections or QR codes and lists supported integrations in its hardware-wallet guide. Before buying a device or transferring an NFT, check the marketplace’s current support information and the wallet’s connection steps for the relevant chain. Support can change over time.

A recovery phrase is a high-value secret. OpenSea warns that anyone who has it has complete control of the wallet. It recommends writing it on paper or metal and storing it in a secure physical location—not saving it as a photo or text file on a phone or computer. MetaMask says it cannot recover a lost phrase for users of its self-custody wallet.

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
- Keep the backup offline in a secure physical location, separate from the device where practical.
- Never share the phrase with a website, support agent, or person claiming to help. OpenSea says it will never ask for it.
- When setting up a hardware wallet, do not routinely import a phrase created in a software wallet. MetaMask recommends creating a new recovery phrase on the hardware device because a software-wallet phrase has already been exposed to an internet-connected environment.
How can I stay safe and protect my NFTs?
OpenSea’s Help Center says, “Using a hardware wallet adds another layer of security for your funds and NFTs.” That extra layer does not make every transaction safe: the owner still needs to protect the recovery phrase and judge what the device or wallet is asking them to approve.

- Watch for phishing and fake support. Never provide a recovery phrase. Download wallet apps only from official provider links.
- Read approvals and signatures. MetaMask explains that token approvals can let a dapp move tokens. Check what access is being requested instead of reflexively approving broad permissions. A hardware device cannot protect you from approving a malicious request you accept.
- Treat unexpected airdrops as suspicious. MetaMask warns that NFT images or metadata can direct users to malicious sites that seek phrases or signatures. Do not follow instructions or links in an unexpected NFT.
- Verify purchases before signing. OpenSea warns that blockchain transactions are irreversible. Check the seller, collection, NFT, and transaction details before buying.
- Secure the physical device. A hardware wallet can be lost or stolen. Keep the device and recovery phrase secure, and do not reveal the phrase.
