Happo is a hosted visual and accessibility regression-testing service that captures selected interface states, compares them with a baseline, and presents changes for review—often from a CI pull-request run. It can fit teams already using Storybook, Playwright, or Cypress, but it does not replace functional tests or reviewer judgment. Its value depends on the UI states and browser targets your tests actually capture, and its plan limits and pricing should be checked against Happo’s live page before purchase.

What Happo does

Happo adds screenshot comparison to an existing UI-testing workflow. A team selects components or application states, captures them in configured browsers and viewports, then compares each result with a baseline. Reviewers can inspect differences using side-by-side, highlighted-diff, or swipe views. A typical workflow connects a run to a CI build and pull request so a developer can decide whether a visual change is expected.

Happo describes its Playwright integration this way: “With Happo, you can keep your existing Playwright suite and capture screenshots for the states that matter most.” That is vendor wording, not an independent performance claim. The same general approach applies to its Storybook and Cypress integrations: reuse existing UI examples or tests rather than authoring a separate suite solely for screenshots.

Choosing an integration and defining coverage

Storybook

Teams whose component library is organized in Storybook can configure Happo’s Storybook plugin to capture selected stories. This works best when stories represent stable, meaningful states—for example, a validation error or an expanded menu—not just a default component appearance. See Happo’s Storybook integration documentation.

Playwright or Cypress

For application-level coverage, Happo’s Playwright and Cypress integrations let teams add screenshots to tests they already run. Choose important states explicitly: a screenshot tool cannot detect a regression in a state that the test suite never reaches. Use assertions for behavior such as navigation, form submission, or data correctness; use visual diffs to identify rendered changes. Neither replaces the other.

Capture the browser and viewport combinations that matter to your users. Multiple targets increase coverage, but also increase snapshot use and the number of baselines reviewers must maintain. Start with a small, representative matrix, then expand it when a supported browser or viewport is important enough to justify the additional comparisons.

Setup: install, configure, and run

The public Happo repository documents installation as a development dependency using npm, pnpm, or yarn. The following commands install the package; use the package manager already used by your project.

npm install --save-dev happo
pnpm add --save-dev happo
yarn add --dev happo

Create the configuration file expected by the package version and integration you use. Happo’s repository example configures API credentials and browser targets, with credentials read from environment variables, then runs the CLI, which discovers the configuration file. Do not commit API keys or secrets: store them in your local environment or CI secret store.

// happo.config.js — illustrative shape; follow the repository's current config format
module.exports = {
  apiKey: process.env.HAPPO_API_KEY,
  apiSecret: process.env.HAPPO_API_SECRET,
  targets: {
    chrome: { /* browser target options */ }
  }
};

The exact target syntax can vary by package or integration version, so use the current configuration example rather than copying a stale config verbatim. Configure the relevant Storybook plugin or add screenshot capture to selected Playwright or Cypress tests. Then run the Happo CLI as documented for your setup:

npx happo

In CI, expose the credentials through the provider’s encrypted secret mechanism and run the same capture command as part of the pull-request workflow. Have the run report differences for review; do not automatically accept new screenshots merely because a build passed.

How to review a visual run

  1. Choose the component stories or test states that represent high-value UI behavior.
  2. Set the browser targets and viewport sizes needed for the supported user experience.
  3. Run captures locally or in CI and compare them with the established baseline.
  4. Inspect the side-by-side, highlighted-diff, or swipe view to determine what changed.
  5. When a difference is intentional, update the baseline through your team’s normal review process; investigate unexpected changes before merging.

A diff is evidence of a rendered difference, not an explanation of its cause. A changed font, browser rendering variation, asynchronous image, or genuinely broken layout can all appear as pixels changing; reviewers still need context from the code and test.

Happo plans, browsers, and snapshot allowances

Happo’s pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, listed the following plans and allowances. Prices, browser availability, and limits can change; verify the live terms before choosing a plan. The page defines one snapshot as one component variant in one browser, and says a run usually occurs once per CI build.

Plan Listed price Snapshots Browser coverage listed
Free $0 5,000/month Chrome
Starter $149/month 50,000/month Chrome and Firefox
Growth $399/month 150,000/month Adds Safari
Pro $749/month 300,000/month Adds iOS Safari and Edge
Enterprise Custom pricing 1M+ listed Confirm details with Happo

The Happo pricing page also listed $0.006 per additional snapshot for Starter, Growth, and Pro. Treat these as vendor-published commercial terms accessed on October 3, 2026, not independent performance statistics. The page says accessibility testing is included on every plan and users are unlimited across plans; check current plan details when evaluating.

Estimate snapshot volume before selecting a tier

A useful rough estimate is:

component variants × browser targets × Happo runs per month

For example, 40 variants captured in 2 browsers on 20 CI builds would be approximately 1,600 snapshots for that workload. Multiply separately for other suites or additional capture runs. This estimate assumes each variant is captured once per listed browser; actual usage should be checked against the way your integration reports snapshots.

Plan-fit checklist

  • Required browser and device matrix: the listed plan coverage differs, with iOS Safari and Edge appearing at Pro in the October 3, 2026 pricing snapshot.
  • Snapshot volume: count variants, targets, and expected CI runs, allowing for additional runs from branches or reruns.
  • Enterprise requirements: check whether your organization needs SSO or enterprise support and confirm those terms directly.
  • Accessibility workflow: Happo says accessibility testing is included on every plan, but verify the scope and current plan details.

Screenshot stability and what visual diffs cannot prove

Happo describes controls intended to reduce screenshot noise, including silencing animations, waiting for fonts and assets, and setting color-delta tolerance. These are mitigation options, not a guarantee of identical captures across every application or environment. The cited product information does not establish a universal flake rate.

Dynamic content, asynchronous assets, font loading, animation, browser differences, and environment configuration can produce noisy differences or conceal a state your tests did not capture. Prefer deterministic fixtures and stable test data; wait for the page elements or assets your scenario depends on; and review baseline changes deliberately. A visual comparison covers only the pixels captured at its configured time, state, viewport, and browser. It cannot establish that interactions work, that uncaptured screens are correct, or that a page is accessible in every respect.

GitLab integration maturity: check current guidance

Happo’s GitLab launch post, dated September 2026, said the integration had not yet received months of validation by a real team using a real repository, real merge requests, and real CI concurrency. That is a caveat about the maturity described at announcement time, not proof of the integration’s current status. Teams evaluating GitLab should consult updated Happo documentation and validate their own branch, fork, and CI setup before relying on it in a critical merge gate.

Common setup and workflow problems

Credentials are missing in CI

If local captures work but CI cannot authenticate, confirm that the CI job receives the API key and secret under the environment variable names used by your configuration. Keep them in the CI secret store, and verify the job context has access to those secrets, especially for forked pull requests where providers may restrict secret exposure.

Unexpected or noisy diffs

First determine whether the change is a real UI regression or a capture-timing/environment difference. Check animation, font and asset readiness, dynamic test data, browser target, and viewport. Use Happo’s documented noise-reduction controls where appropriate, then rerun with stable fixtures rather than blindly approving the baseline.

Snapshot use is higher than expected

Recalculate variants multiplied by browser targets and monthly runs. Include CI reruns and extra branch builds in the estimate. If usage still differs from the estimate, inspect how your integration defines a variant and how it reports completed snapshots before changing plans.

GitLab pull-request behavior is unclear

Because the September 2026 launch post characterized real-world concurrency validation as incomplete at that time, confirm current documentation and test the exact merge-request, fork, and CI concurrency paths your team will use.

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative screenshot service

Happo is for baseline-based visual and accessibility regression workflows. If you instead need a screenshot API for capturing pages programmatically, ScreenshotNeo is a separate option: it removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed; and it offers an MCP server for AI agents.

One-call example, with the full parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo says bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. The MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. These are API and capture-service capabilities, not a substitute for Happo’s baseline review workflow.
