Happen Bank may suit customers comfortable with online-only banking who can meet its savings deposit condition and do not need branches or overdraft coverage. Its LevelUp Savings rate was 4.20% APY with at least $250 in qualifying deposits per statement cycle, versus a 3.00% Standard Rate when the condition was missed; both variable rates were accurate as of September 22, 2026. Checking, savings and CDs have different eligibility rules and tradeoffs, so compare the account terms—not just the advertised rates—before opening one.
What is Happen Bank?
Happen Bank is the digital banking brand of Happen, Inc. The company said in its July 27, 2026 results release that it had rebranded from LendingClub and was operating its first quarter under the Happen Bank name. Older references to LendingClub’s deposit accounts may therefore describe the predecessor brand rather than a separate bank. Happen’s announcement includes CEO Scott Sanborn’s description of the change as “forward momentum”; that is the company’s characterization, not an independent evaluation.

The consumer lineup includes LevelUp Checking, LevelUp Savings and certificates of deposit (CDs). Happen lists no minimum opening deposit for checking or savings and a $500 minimum for CDs. Its deposit page lists CD terms from six months through five years. Happen’s deposit page
LevelUp Savings: the higher rate requires qualifying deposits
Happen’s product disclosure lists a 4.20% APY LevelUp Rate when at least $250 in qualifying deposits arrive during an Evaluation Period, and a 3.00% APY Standard Rate otherwise. Both variable rates were accurate as of September 22, 2026, and may change without notice. When the deposit test is met, the LevelUp Rate applies to the full account balance. How the $250 condition works
An Evaluation Period is a statement cycle. Happen says a new account initially receives the LevelUp Rate through its first evaluation period; after that, a rate change takes effect in the next statement cycle following the deposit evaluation. Qualifying deposits exclude interest payments, account bonuses, account credits, and bank reversals or refunds. In practice, customers seeking the higher rate should plan on a recurring $250 deposit habit rather than assume the opening rate will continue automatically.

Happen’s official marketing page displayed a 4.00% APY headline in one location while its dated footnote identified 4.20% APY. The dated product disclosure specifies 4.20% with the deposit condition and 3.00% otherwise, both accurate September 22, 2026. Because the page figures conflict and rates are variable, confirm the current disclosure and account-opening terms before relying on either number. Happen’s deposit page
LevelUp Checking: rewards have conditions
Happen describes LevelUp Checking as offering cash back on qualifying debit purchases and on certain Happen personal-loan payments. The bank’s page says qualifying loan payments must be made electronically and on time, match the monthly payment amount, and come from an eligible account with direct deposit; some Happen loan products are excluded. Early direct deposit is also conditional on the payer supporting it. These terms do not amount to a blanket cash-back rate on every purchase. Happen’s deposit page
NerdWallet’s review, last updated February 12, 2026, reports no monthly fee or minimum opening or balance requirement. It describes 1% cash back on some signature-based grocery, gas and pharmacy transactions, with at least one monthly direct deposit required, and 1.00% APY on balances of at least $2,500. Those details come from a secondary review and should be checked against Happen’s current LevelUp Checking disclosures. NerdWallet gives Happen an overall 4.7 rating, also dated February 12, 2026; the rating is NerdWallet’s assessment, not a result of this article’s testing. NerdWallet discloses that many or all products on its page may come from partners that compensate it for clicks or actions, while stating that compensation does not influence its ratings. Fees, ATM access and the online-only tradeoff
Happen’s legal deposit terms list a $0 opening deposit and $0 monthly maintenance fee for checking. They also state there is no bank fee for using SUM or MoneyPass network ATMs and that the bank provides unlimited rebates of out-of-network ATM owner fees. International ATM rebates may not apply automatically. Happen’s deposit account terms
NerdWallet reports that Happen has no branch access and no overdraft program. That matters if you regularly need teller service, cash deposits, or a way to cover transactions that exceed your available balance. The cited bank materials do not establish branch or cash-deposit access, so do not assume either is available. NerdWallet’s Happen Bank review
Happen CD rates and terms
Happen’s rate page listed the following annual percentage yields as accurate September 22, 2026. These are dated snapshots, not guaranteed offers for a future application; rates can change before opening. CDs require a $500 minimum opening deposit, with a $500,000 maximum opening deposit. Fees may reduce earnings, early withdrawal penalties may apply, and the CD automatically renews at the then-offered rate when its initial term ends. Happen’s deposit page

Before choosing a term, compare its current APY with how long you can leave the money untouched. Check the CD agreement for the specific early-withdrawal penalty and renewal mechanics, and note the maturity date so an automatic renewal does not lock up funds you need. FDIC insurance: how the limit applies
Checking, savings and CD deposits at an insured bank are covered by FDIC deposit insurance within applicable limits. The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Accounts held in the same ownership category at the same bank are aggregated; separate checking, savings and CD accounts do not each receive a fresh $250,000 limit. Review your combined balances and ownership categories when assessing coverage. FDIC deposit insurance guide
Who may find Happen a fit?
- Potential fit: customers who are comfortable managing money online, value ATM-fee rebates, and can meet the savings deposit requirement when seeking the LevelUp Rate.
- Less suitable: customers who need branch service, expect to deposit cash, want an overdraft program, or cannot comfortably leave CD funds in place until maturity.
- Before opening: verify the current savings and CD rates, the checking reward qualifications, fees and ATM terms in Happen’s live disclosures; confirm that your total deposits remain within the FDIC limit for your ownership category.
NerdWallet compares Happen CDs with Bread Savings CDs and Happen checking with SoFi Checking and Savings, but its February 2026 review may not reflect later account changes. Treat those comparisons as a starting point and check each provider’s current terms on the same date; rates, minimums, fees, access and qualification rules need to be compared on equal terms.
