The Hang Seng Index (HSI) is intended to represent the broad Hong Kong stock market, while the Hang Seng TECH Index (HSTECH) concentrates on eligible technology companies that pass its technology and trading screens. Both use free-float-adjusted market-capitalisation weighting, but they select companies differently and apply different concentration limits.

The latest comparable figures in the official fund disclosures are dated 31 March 2026: 75 HSI constituents and 30 HSTECH constituents. Those are dated snapshots, not live counts. Membership, weights and index rules can change at the provider’s quarterly reviews.

The short answer: broad-market benchmark versus technology index

The HSI and HSTECH are separate benchmarks maintained under separate methodologies. The HSI’s job is to provide a broad gauge of Hong Kong-listed equity performance. HSTECH’s job is narrower: it tracks a selected group of companies classified as technology-related and meeting additional eligibility and trading requirements.

That difference affects what each index tells you. A move in the HSI is designed to reflect a wide cross-section of the Hong Kong market. A move in HSTECH is more heavily influenced by the performance of the technology companies admitted to its universe. HSTECH is therefore not simply the HSI with every technology-linked company highlighted; it has its own universe, screens, caps and review process.

What the Hang Seng Index measures

A broad Hong Kong market barometer

The HSI is designed as a benchmark for the overall Hong Kong stock market rather than a single industry. Its broad-market methodology determines which eligible securities enter the index and how their weights are calculated. The result is intended to provide one investable reference point for the performance of large and representative Hong Kong-listed companies across sectors.

History and base value

The HSI was launched on 24 November 1969. Its base value is 100 as of 31 July 1964. The base date and value are reference points for calculating index levels; they are not a promise that an investment made at that time would have produced the same return after fees, dividends, taxes or implementation costs.

What “broad” does not mean

Broad does not mean every Hong Kong listing is included, nor does it mean every industry receives the same weight. Eligibility, representation requirements, free-float adjustments, liquidity considerations and constituent caps all affect the final composition. A company can be listed in Hong Kong without being an HSI constituent.

What the Hang Seng TECH Index measures

A screened technology universe

HSTECH narrows the starting universe to companies that meet its technology-related criteria and then applies its eligibility and trading screens. “Technology” in the name is therefore a methodology category, not a guarantee that every company with a technology product, website or digital strategy qualifies.

The index can include companies whose businesses span more than one area, provided they satisfy the applicable classification and other requirements. The methodology, rather than a casual description of a company’s industry, determines eligibility.

Thirty constituents in the dated snapshot

The official HSTECH fund document reported 30 constituents as at 31 March 2026. That figure should be read with the date and source attached. It is not a permanent target or a live count, and it should not be used to infer the current number of members after subsequent quarterly reviews.

Technology concentration creates a different exposure

Because HSTECH starts with a technology-focused universe, its returns can be more sensitive to changes affecting technology companies, such as product cycles, competition, regulation, interest rates and valuation multiples. That is an exposure characteristic, not a forecast of outperformance. A concentrated theme can rise faster than a broad market in some periods and fall faster in others.

How constituent selection differs

HSI selection

HSI selection follows the provider’s broad-market methodology. The process is intended to maintain a representative benchmark while applying the provider’s eligibility and selection rules. The supplied official fund disclosure does not provide a single fixed list of sectors or a permanent membership count; both can change as the eligible market changes.

HSTECH selection

HSTECH applies a technology-company universe and additional screens. A technology label alone is insufficient. The company must meet the methodology’s requirements, including the relevant trading and eligibility conditions, before it can be selected.

Why the two lists overlap but are not identical

Some HSTECH companies may also be HSI constituents because they are large and eligible for the broad benchmark. Other HSTECH members may not appear in the HSI, while many HSI members will not qualify for HSTECH because they are outside its technology universe or fail its screens. The indexes should therefore be treated as related but non-interchangeable baskets.

How free-float-adjusted market-capitalisation weighting works

The basic calculation

Both indexes use free-float-adjusted market capitalisation. In simplified terms, a company’s influence starts with its market value and is reduced to reflect the shares considered available for public trading rather than all issued shares. A larger eligible free float generally produces a larger weight, subject to each index’s caps and other rules.

Free-float adjustment matters because a company’s total issued shares can include strategic, government, controlling or otherwise restricted holdings that are not readily available to ordinary market participants. The adjustment is designed to make the benchmark more representative of the tradable market.

HSI limits

The HSI also applies constituent caps under its own rules. The official comparison materials supplied for this article do not state the numerical HSI caps, so no specific percentage should be assumed. The existence of a cap means the largest eligible companies may not receive their uncapped free-float market-capitalisation weight.

HSTECH limits

HSTECH’s published limits are explicit:

  • An individual non-foreign constituent is capped at 8%.
  • An individual foreign constituent is capped at 4%.
  • All foreign constituents together are capped at 10%.

These limits constrain concentration after the free-float-adjusted calculation. They do not mean every non-foreign company receives 8%, or that foreign companies collectively always equal 10%; the caps are maximums under the methodology.

Why caps matter to readers

Without caps, the largest companies could dominate a market-capitalisation-weighted index. Caps can spread weight across more constituents and reduce the effect of one company or one ownership category. The trade-off is that the capped index may differ from an uncapped portfolio holding each stock strictly in proportion to its free-float market value.

Constituent counts: what the latest figures actually say

The most recent directly comparable counts in the cited official documents are both as at 31 March 2026:

Index Reported count Source context How to interpret it
HSI 75 Official Hang Seng Investment Series ESG fund disclosure. Dated snapshot, not a guaranteed current count.
HSTECH 30 Official Hang Seng Investment Series HSTECH fund document. Dated snapshot, not a guaranteed current count.

The difference in count is consistent with their different jobs: one is broad-market, the other is a screened technology index. It does not by itself indicate which index is better, cheaper or likely to perform better.

Review schedule and keeping the data current

Quarterly reviews

The official fund documents describe quarterly constituent reviews for both indexes. At a review, companies can be added, removed or reweighted when they no longer meet the methodology or when eligible companies change. Corporate actions can also require adjustments between scheduled reviews.

Where to check current membership

For a present-day constituent list, weight, methodology version or review result, use the index provider’s current official materials. A fund factsheet dated 31 March 2026 is useful for understanding that date, but it cannot establish today’s live composition.

Why old lists can mislead

Search results, screenshots and fund documents often remain online after a review. Check the “as at” date before comparing a list with a current price chart or portfolio. A company shown in an older list may have been removed, and a current member may not appear in historical material.

Index level, market capitalisation and an investor’s money

The official HSTECH disclosure reported an index market capitalisation after capping of HKD 3,273.8 billion as at 31 March 2026. This is a dated aggregate index-level figure. It is not the value of one investor’s holdings, the amount of money invested in every tracking product, or a forecast of future market value.

An index level and a fund’s net asset value are different measurements. The index is a rules-based calculation; a fund owns securities, incurs expenses and may not match the index exactly because of fees, taxes, trading costs, cash, sampling and other implementation effects.

Can you buy the HSI or HSTECH directly?

No. An index is a benchmark calculation, not a physical security. Investors generally obtain exposure through a fund or another vehicle designed to track an index. The official HSTECH fund document identifies an ETF that aims to track HSTECH.

Fund units are not the index itself. Before considering any tracking product, check its current prospectus and factsheet for:

  • Management fees and other ongoing charges.
  • Tracking difference and tracking error history.
  • Replication method, holdings and use of derivatives, if any.
  • Trading currency, exchange listing and bid-ask spreads.
  • Dividend treatment and tax information.
  • Risk disclosures, dealing hours and investor eligibility in your jurisdiction.

The existence of an ETF does not establish that it is suitable for a particular investor. Suitability depends on objectives, time horizon, risk tolerance, tax position and local rules.

Which index is more useful for a particular question?

Use HSI when you need a broad Hong Kong benchmark

HSI is the more natural reference when you want to compare a diversified Hong Kong equity portfolio with the overall market, discuss broad Hong Kong performance or avoid restricting the analysis to one industry classification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use HSTECH when the technology segment is the subject

HSTECH is more relevant when the question concerns technology-focused Hong Kong-listed companies, a technology allocation or the performance of the screened technology universe. Its narrower remit makes it a sector or theme benchmark rather than a replacement for a broad-market measure.

Use both for context, not as substitutes

Comparing the two can show how the screened technology segment behaved relative to the broader market during a period. Interpret the gap carefully: differences may reflect sector concentration, constituent caps, foreign-ownership limits, company overlap, currency effects and different rebalancing outcomes.

Common mistakes when comparing HSI and HSTECH

Assuming every technology company is included

HSTECH has defined technology and trading criteria. A Hong Kong listing with a technology-related business is not automatically eligible.

Treating dated counts as live data

The 75 and 30 figures are both tied to 31 March 2026. Presenting them without that date turns a historical snapshot into an unsupported current claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring weighting caps

Market-capitalisation weighting does not mean unlimited concentration. HSTECH’s 8%, 4% and 10% limits and the HSI’s own caps can materially alter final weights.

Comparing an index with a fund as if they were identical

A fund can underperform or outperform its index over a short period because of expenses, trading, taxes, cash balances and replication choices. Compare the fund’s stated tracking objective and performance data with the index methodology.

Reading a price chart without checking the index version

Index providers can publish price, total-return and related variants. Confirm whether dividends are included and identify the calculation version before drawing conclusions about performance.

A practical checklist for a current comparison

  1. Write down the question: broad Hong Kong market, technology segment or a portfolio benchmark.
  2. Check the index methodology version and the effective date.
  3. Retrieve the latest constituent list and weights from official provider materials.
  4. Record the “as at” date beside every count, weight and market-capitalisation figure.
  5. Confirm whether the series is price return or includes reinvested distributions.
  6. If using a fund, read its current factsheet for fees, tracking results, replication and eligibility.
  7. Compare like with like: the same currency, time period, return definition and review date.

Bottom line for interpreting the difference

HSI is the broad Hong Kong market reference; HSTECH is a smaller, screened technology benchmark. Both begin with free-float-adjusted market capitalisation, but HSTECH imposes clearly stated 8% non-foreign, 4% individual foreign and 10% aggregate foreign caps, while HSI follows its own constituent limits. The official documents report 75 HSI constituents and 30 HSTECH constituents as at 31 March 2026, with quarterly reviews capable of changing those figures. Choose the benchmark that matches the market question, and verify current rules and fund terms before using either for an investment decision.
