Handoff continues an active task on another nearby Apple device, while Universal Clipboard transfers content you copied so you can paste it elsewhere. For example, Handoff can let you continue a Safari page, Mail message, document, or map search. Universal Clipboard lets you copy text, a photo, a file, or another supported item on an iPhone and paste it on a Mac.
The features are related: Apple describes Universal Clipboard as a Continuity feature that uses Handoff. They therefore share core requirements, but they are not interchangeable. Choose Handoff when you want to resume work; choose Universal Clipboard when you only need to move copied content.

Both features are designed for devices that belong to you and are close to one another. They are not general-purpose ways to send content to any nearby Apple device.
What Handoff does
Handoff is for continuity of work. You begin an activity on one Apple device, then another nearby device presents a way to open that same activity there. The receiving device does not merely receive a copied object; it opens the supported app so you can carry on with the broader task.

Examples of Handoff tasks
- Open a Safari webpage you started reading on an iPhone on a Mac.
- Continue composing or reading an email in Mail.
- Resume a FaceTime call, a Maps route or search, or a Calendar item.
- Open the same work in Contacts, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, or Reminders.
- Resume an activity in a participating third-party app.
Apple’s built-in apps listed for Handoff include Safari, Mail, FaceTime, Maps, Calendar, Contacts, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Reminders. Third-party support varies by developer and by the app’s current version, so an app installed on both devices does not automatically mean that it supports Handoff.
How you invoke Handoff
Handoff is initiated from the device where you want to continue. On a Mac, the continuation item normally appears in the Dock. On an iPhone, the Handoff item appears in the app switcher. On an iPad, the location and presentation can vary by system version and multitasking setup. Select that item to open the activity in the receiving device’s app.
The activity must still be recognizable to the app. Handoff is therefore more useful for a live workflow than for moving one isolated piece of information. If you only want to transfer a sentence, image, or file, Universal Clipboard is usually the simpler choice.
What Universal Clipboard does
Universal Clipboard makes the copy and paste commands work across nearby Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Copy on the source device exactly as you normally would, move to the destination device, and paste into an app that accepts that content type.
Content you can transfer
Apple’s guidance covers text, images, photos, videos, files, and other content, subject to what the relevant apps support. A copied web address can be pasted into a Mac browser; a photo can be pasted into an image editor or document; and a file can be pasted into a compatible folder or app. The receiving app still controls whether it accepts the item and how it represents it.

Universal Clipboard is not a document-sync system
The feature transfers the current clipboard item; it does not create a permanent shared clipboard history or synchronize every edit between devices. If you copy something new on either device, the previous item is replaced. Apple also says the copied content remains available only briefly, without specifying an exact duration in its support guidance.
That short lifetime matters when you are switching between devices. Copy immediately before changing devices, and paste before performing another copy operation. If a destination app does not accept the content, try a different compatible app rather than assuming the transfer failed.

How the two features are related
Universal Clipboard uses the Handoff infrastructure. That is why enabling Handoff is a requirement even when you do not plan to use Handoff’s visible continuation prompt. In practical terms, Handoff is the broader capability and Universal Clipboard is one specialized use of it.
The relationship does not mean that every Handoff-supported app can accept every clipboard object, or that every app with copy and paste supports Handoff. App support remains separate. Handoff needs an app-specific continuation implementation; Universal Clipboard needs copy-and-paste support for the particular content and destination.
Shared requirements before you start
For either feature, participating devices must satisfy Apple’s applicable system and hardware requirements. Apple’s current support material refers to feature-specific compatibility requirements but does not provide one universal model-and-version list in the guidance summarized here. Check Apple’s current compatibility information for your exact iPhone, iPad, and Mac before diagnosing a failure as a software bug.

- Sign in to the same Apple Account on every participating device.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on each device.
- Turn on Handoff.
- Keep the devices near one another; Apple specifies within 30 feet (10 meters) when troubleshooting Universal Clipboard problems.
- Use software versions that meet the feature’s current requirements.
- Check whether a VPN or other network configuration blocks local networking.
These are local continuity features. An internet connection alone is not a substitute for nearby devices, enabled Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff.
Turn on Handoff
On iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Open AirPlay & Continuity and turn on Handoff. The wording or location can vary with the operating-system version.
- Confirm that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled in Settings or Control Center.
- Verify that the device is signed in to the same Apple Account as the Mac or other Apple device you will use.
On Mac
- Open System Settings.
- Choose General.
- Open AirDrop & Continuity or AirDrop & Handoff, depending on the macOS version.
- Turn on the Handoff option.
- Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled and that the same Apple Account is active.
Older macOS releases use System Preferences > General for the equivalent setting. If you cannot find the newer label, search System Settings for “Handoff” rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
Use Handoff step by step
- Open a Handoff-capable app on the first device.
- Start the activity you want to continue, such as opening a webpage, composing an email, or editing a supported document.
- Leave Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff enabled while you move to the second device.
- On the receiving Mac, select the Handoff item in the Dock. On an iPhone, open the app switcher and select the Handoff item; on an iPad, use the Handoff control presented by the system.
- Continue in the app that opens. If no continuation item appears, confirm that the app supports Handoff and that both devices meet the shared requirements.
Handoff is most predictable when the same app is available on both devices and the activity is one that the developer has explicitly supported. A browser page or email in a supported app is a better test than an arbitrary app session.
Use Universal Clipboard step by step
- On the source device, select the text, image, photo, video, file, or other item.
- Choose Copy using the app’s normal command.
- Keep the destination device nearby and unlocked or ready for use.
- Open the destination app where the item belongs.
- Choose Paste in the usual way.
No separate “send” command is required. If the paste does not occur, avoid copying anything else while testing; a new copy on either device can replace the item you intended to transfer.

App support and compatibility limits
Handoff is explicitly app-dependent. Apple’s own apps provide the clearest examples, but support can change as an app is updated. If a task never produces a Handoff item while other supported apps work, the likely issue is app support rather than the account or radio settings.

Universal Clipboard is governed by the source and destination apps’ copy-and-paste behavior. A destination may accept plain text but reject formatted text, a large media object, or a particular file type. The clipboard transfer can therefore succeed while the paste command remains unavailable in the chosen app.
Do not rely on an old list of minimum operating-system versions or device models. Apple’s requirements change, and the official support pages summarized for this article do not expose a complete compatibility matrix. Verify the current requirement for each device generation and operating-system release.

Apple Platform Security states that Universal Clipboard leverages Handoff to transfer clipboard content and that the content is protected like other Handoff data. The transfer is intended for devices signed in to the same Apple Account and located nearby.
Apple also notes an important clipboard-access detail: apps can access clipboard data whether or not you have pasted it into that app. With Universal Clipboard, Apple says that this access extends to apps on the user’s other devices signed in to the account. This does not establish that every app uploads or permanently stores clipboard contents; it means you should treat copied information as available to compatible apps under the platform’s clipboard rules.

Troubleshoot Universal Clipboard
Nothing pastes on the destination
- Confirm both devices use the same Apple Account.
- Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on both devices.
- Move the devices within 30 feet (10 meters).
- Copy the item again, then paste promptly without making another copy.
- Test a simple text snippet to separate a connection problem from an app or content-format limitation.
Handoff does not appear
- Verify Handoff is enabled on both devices.
- Try a known supporting app such as Safari, Mail, Maps, Calendar, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Contacts, Reminders, or FaceTime.
- Make sure the activity is open and active on the source device.
- Check the same-account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, proximity, and compatibility requirements.
Both features stopped working after a network change
Review any VPN or security configuration that may block local networking. Apple identifies VPN configurations that prevent local communication as a possible cause of Continuity problems. Temporarily removing that local-network restriction, where appropriate for your security policy, can distinguish a network-path issue from an account or app issue.
Basic recovery sequence
- Install available software updates for the participating devices.
- Recheck the settings and account after the update.
- Restart the devices if Universal Clipboard still fails; Apple includes restarting among its recommended steps.
- Retest with a short text sample and a supported Apple app before testing files or media.
Common misunderstandings
“Universal Clipboard is just Handoff renamed.”
No. Universal Clipboard uses Handoff technology but has a narrower job: transferring the current clipboard item. Handoff itself can resume a supported activity and open the appropriate app.
“If copy and paste works locally, it must work across devices.”
Local copy and paste proves only that the individual app supports that operation. Cross-device transfer also requires the shared account, wireless, Handoff, proximity, and compatibility conditions.

“The clipboard stays available until I clear it.”
Apple describes Universal Clipboard content as temporary. It remains available briefly or until another copy replaces it, and Apple does not give an exact duration in the cited guidance.
“Every app can be continued with Handoff.”
Only apps that implement Handoff can offer a continuation item. Third-party support is determined by the developer, not merely by installing the same app on two devices.
Bottom line for everyday use
Use Handoff when the thing you want is an ongoing task: a webpage, message, route, call, reminder, or supported document. Use Universal Clipboard when the thing you want is a piece of content: copy it on one device and paste it on another. Because Universal Clipboard depends on Handoff, configure the shared Continuity requirements once, then choose the feature based on whether you are resuming work or transferring an item.
