Handheld Gaming PC Storage: M.2 SSD vs. microSD Card

An M.2 SSD provides internal storage; a microSD card offers removable expansion. Which fits depends on your handheld’s exact specifications and your upgrade needs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on your handheld’s exact model: an M.2 SSD is internal storage, while a microSD card is removable expansion that works only if the device has a compatible reader. A card is the simpler way to add removable space; an SSD upgrade may suit someone seeking more internal storage who is comfortable checking fit and the device’s upgrade process. There is no universal capacity limit or speed advantage that applies to every handheld.

What’s the difference between an M.2 SSD and a microSD card?

  • M.2 SSD: Internal storage, either installed by the manufacturer or upgraded if the handheld’s design and documentation permit it. Fit depends on the supported M.2 length, interface, and physical clearance.
  • microSD card: Removable expansion inserted into a built-in card reader. Compatibility depends on the reader, supported card interface and formats, and any device capacity limit.

These are different storage routes, not interchangeable parts. An M.2 SSD cannot be added through a microSD slot, and a microSD card does not replace an internal SSD.

Check before buying Exact model, M.2 length, interface, clearance, and upgrade instructions. Reader presence, supported card type and interface, and the device’s capacity limit.
Installation Requires access to the device; the process depends on the model. Insert the card and complete any device-specific setup or formatting.

The official specifications below identify interfaces and configurations, but do not provide controlled, side-by-side read/write or game-loading tests. They therefore cannot support a specific speed ratio or promise of shorter loading times.

A quick checklist before buying

  • Identify the exact handheld model and edition; similarly named models can have different storage specifications.
  • For an SSD, verify M.2 length, interface, clearance, and the device’s upgrade instructions.
  • For a microSD card, confirm the device has a reader and check its supported card type, interface, and capacity limit.
  • Use manufacturer specifications for that model rather than assuming another device’s maximum capacity or interface applies.
